Stone Temple Pilots Announce Tour, Plans For New Album The reunited Stone Temple Pilots announced the details of their sixty-five city summer tour yesterday at a press conference in Los Angeles. The tour, which will kick off May 17th in Columbus, Ohio, will roll on until November. If things go smoothly, guitarist Dean DeLeo predicted the band would start work on a new album, their first since 2001’s Shangri-La Dee Da. “The story’s not finished,” Scott Weiland said. “There’s more to be revealed and more to be told.” The band also revealed they would make their return to late night TV with an appearance on the Jimmy Kimmel Show on May 1st. (Click here to see photos of the band onstage after their big announcement.) Following the press conference, the band played a small, private half-hour show in the Hollywood Hills. It was the STP’s first live performance together in nearly six years. “Plush,” “Interstate Love Song” and “Vasoline,” were among the songs on the hits-filled setlist. A fan at the show mananged to get some crude-looking (but good-sounding) cell phone video of “Big Empty,” which you can watch after the jump. Plus, click ahead for the band’s first leg of tour dates… May 17 - Columbus, OH @ Rock on the Range Festival May 18 - Camden, NJ @ Tweeter Center at The Waterfront May 20 - Cleveland, OH @ State Theatre at Playhouse Square May 22 - Chicago, IL @ Charter One Pavillion May 23 - Indianapolis, IN @ Indianapolis Motor Speedway May 26 - Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Casino May 31 - Holmdel, NJ @ PNC Bank Arts Center June 1 - Mansfield, MA @ Tweeter Center for the Performing Arts June 3 - Detroit ,MI @ The Fillmore Detroit June 6 - St. Paul, MN @ Roy Wilkens Auditorium June 7 - Kansas City, KS @ Rock Fest at Liberty Memorial Park June 8 - Maryland Hghts, MO @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre June 11 - West Valley City, UT @ E Center June 12 - Las Vegas, NV @ The Pearl June 14 - Las Vegas,NV @ The Pearl Jun

Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted Madonna, John Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, the Ventures and the Dave Clark Five, and Rock Daily was at the ceremony. Over at the Capri Lounge, the Rolling Stone editors blogged about the event at length. At South By Southwest, we caught R.E.M. live, interviewed Robyn, previewed the new My Morning Jacket album, and a lot more. We’ll be in Austin all weekend, so check back often for more indie rock insanity. American Idol’s Top 12 contestants took on the Lennon/McCartney catalog, and David Hernandez was stripped of his chance at winning after audiences reacted poorly to his scandal (and song). And you may soon be seeing more of Amanda Overmeyer than you bargained for. Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor bragged about how much money his Ghosts I-IV made, launched a YouTube film festival and bad-mouthed Radiohead. We hope those two bands can make amends before their rumored Lollapalooza headlining gigs. Van Halen postponed a month’s worth of tour dates for “medical reasons,” which doesn’t mean rehab. Thankfully, the announcement of Leonard Cohen’s first tour in fifteen years softened the blow, as did seeing Bruce Springsteen’s concert at the Nassau Coliseum. [Photo: Getty]

Hot Issue Hits and Misses: Nas and Cory Branan Rolling Stone’s 2008 Hot Issue spotlights acts like Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend (more on that here). All week, we’ve been taking a look at Hot Issue hits and misses from the past twenty-one years (because nobody’s cultural thermometer is accurate all the time). Hit: “A savior,” we called him. “The hip-hop Proust.” Whatever insane expectations we placed on Nas, the Hot Rapper of 1994, he’s lived up to them. He’s since feuded with Jay-Z and somehow survived, he married the girl who’s milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (Kelis), and he’s one of the few rappers who has credibility enough to claim Hip Hop Is Dead. Unfortunately, Nas’ hotness didn’t rub off on his 1994 Hot List page 64 neighbor, Hot Athlete/Baltimore Orioles Jeffrey Hammonds, who finished his disappointing baseball career in 2005 after playing for six teams over the course of twelve years. Miss: In his 2002 Hot Singer-Songwriter write-up, we (and his Wikipedia page) had the audacity to mention Cory Branan in the same sentence as peers Ryan Adams and Bright Eyes. Branan’s The Hell You Say lead to appearances on David Letterman, Carson Daly and our Hot List, but it would be another four years before Branan’s sophomore album 12 Songs was released to little fanfare. Branan also probably wins the award for Hot Lister with the smallest MySpace following (7,458 fans as of right now). Is Britney Spears Performing Next Week? Idol Skips Gwen And Pink For Il Divo, And More Is Britney Spears getting back in the saddle? Rumor has it that the shorn pop star will be performing next Wednesday at the Anaheim House of Blues under the band name M+M’s. The M+M’s supposedly equal Britney and her backup dancers. Interesting … Time for your daily Idol update: Pre-recorded appearances by Gwen Stefani and Pink were set to air at some point during the Idol gives back episode, but were cut for time. Meanwhile, they show raised an astonishing $60 million for charity. Britain’s top rock and pop bands account for nearly £3bn of the country’s wealth. The Rolling Stones and U2 lead the pack, which also includes super-wealthy artists like Paul McCartney (whose divorce has knocked him down a few rungs on the rich UK rocker ladder) plus members of Pink Floyd and Queen. The Arctic Monkeys are about to make chart history by having 18 tracks in the UK singles charts at once. When the charts come out on Sunday it’s expected that all 12 tracks from the band’s new album Favourite Worst Nightmare plus six from their debut Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not will be in the top 200 via internet download sales. Bobby “Boris” Pickett, best known as the singer of Halloween anthem “Monster Mash,” has died of leukemia. He was 69.

English Beat-Like Band Joins INXS-Ish Act, Ozzfest Bands Announced, SXSW Never Stops In what has to be the most fury-inspiring tour ever, the fake INXS and a supposedly reunited version of the English Beat, which is composed of ONE original member, vocalist/guitarist Dave Wakeling, are reportedly touring together for a few British dates. We would like to turn these bands attention to our handy guide, Rolling Stone’s Rules for the Fair Use of Important Band Names, which we feel will best communicate our feelings on this. When the news broke that this year’s Ozzfest would be free, we wondered which bands would be willing to forgo their usual rates and perform at the event. The answer: Lamb of God, Hatebreed, and Lordi, apparently. The bands have all confirmed they will participate in Ozzfest 2007. Book your hotel for SXSW 2008 today! The festival may have just ended, but the dates for next year’s event — March 12 - 16 — have apparently already been announced. Insanity. We can’t decide how we feel about the news that there will be a Jeff Buckley greatest hits compilation. On the one hand it’s like Grace is all you really need. It’s his only real studio album, it’s perfect, untouchable. But there is a handful of other worthy Buckley material culled from live performances and from the unfinished My Sweetheart the Drunk album. So perhaps it would be nice to hear those on one album? Still, someday we’ll have to stop mining this man’s fragile, woefully short life for more pieces of him and just be grateful for what we got.

AT&T Vows No Censorship During Webcasts of Austin City Limits; Plus Full ACL Broadcast Schedule After enduring serious flak for cutting out pieces of Pearl Jam’s Lollapalooza performance — the pieces during which the band criticized President Bush — on AT&T’s Blue Room Webcast, the company has decided to loosen up, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. “AT&T’s Blue Room has adopted a new policy with respect to live Webcasted performances, and that is that we’re not going to do any audio editing for any reason,” said AT&T spokeswoman Tiffany O’Brien Nels. “We’re letting it rip, as the saying goes. We do reserve the right to edit the video feed, but we will only do that either through camera angles or video blackouts for excessive sexual content — nudity or simulated sex acts. Because the site is not eighteen and over and we do believe we still have some obligation to the younger audience, you will now see strong viewer discretion messaging before and during the Webcast.” Yesterday the company issued a press release announcing they’ll be Webcasting from the Austin City Limits festival today through Sunday. We got our hands on their full Blue Room schedule, which includes MIA, Arctic Monkeys, Paolo Nutini, Joss Stone, Spoon, Regina Spektor and Bloc Party. Check out the full Webcast lineup after the jump. And stay tuned to Rock Daily for full ACL fest coverage, including video, photos and a wrap-up report.
