The Wizards of PopSomebody is screwing up, coming in on the wrong beat every time
somewhere near the start of the third verse. And it's throwing the
whole song, not to mention the rest of the band and the mood of
fragile optimism in the room, out of whack.

Hype Monitor: Maria Taylor, Love Language and Laura GibsonPhoto: Autumn De Wilde Every week, Hype Monitor wades through the most buzzed-about bands all across the Internet to find the ones you need to hear now. The Band: Maria Taylor The Buzz: One half of dream-pop duo Azure Ray takes off for the country, turning in grand, galloping folk songs. Listen If: You wish Taylor Swift were a little less chipper and chirpy. Key Track: “Cartoons & Forever Songs,” a bright, bounding love song that sports simple, moving lyrics and guest vocals by Michael Stipe. The Band: Love Language The Buzz: North Carolina group proffer broke-down folk music, constructing songs from slack acoustic guitars imagine a kind of Romper Room Appalachia. Listen If: You whiled away your childhood strumming away on a tiny plastic, nylon-stringed guitar. Key Track: Ultimate crowd-pleaser (and lone rocker) “Lalita,” whose searing guitar brands itself across the brain instantly. The Band: Laura Gibson The Buzz: Think of her as Maria Taylor’s shyer, quieter sister: pastoral acoustic songs topped with Gibson’s miniature voice. Listen If: You need a new soundtrack for your next long hike through the enchanted forest. Key Track: The lonesome, loping “Spirited,” where Gibson’s breathy coos bounce across twinkling finger-picking.

Conchords, Kimmel, “Idol” Grab Emmy Noms A pair of Flight of the Conchords songs will compete for an Emmy at this year’s awards ceremony for television excellence. Both “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)” and “Inner City Pressure” from the band’s self-titled HBO series were nominated in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category. The duo will have some serious competition though, as the viral hit “I’m F***ing Matt Damon,” performed by Sarah Silverman and the Bourne Identity star for Jimmy Kimmel Live, was also picked among the five finalists. Another f***ing song was also nominated in the Outstanding Picture Editing of Clip Packages for Talk, Performance, Award or Reality Competition Series. In that category, “I’m F***ing Matt Damon” and Kimmel’s response-song “I’m F***ing Ben Affleck” will curiously compete against the “David Cook Goes Home” segment from this year’s American Idol. AI was the beneficiary of many nods, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Technical Direction and Outstanding Host for Ryan Seacrest.

The Flaming Lips Rock in 2010 With “Dark Side of the Moon” ShowThere is a reason why the Flaming Lips have become one of the most improbably famous rock bands in the world: they are ridiculous. Seeing band ring in the new year at the Cox Center, their home city’s oldest venue for arena rock — in the same room where a teenage version of frontman Wayne Coyne once saw both the Who and Led Zeppelin give lessons on rock showmanship — it’s hard not to admire the Lips’ goofy charisma and general display of balls (both literal and metaphoric). Before launching into

Watch Phoenix Talk Grammy Nod, Inspiration Behind Hit “1901 “Rolling Stone caught up with Phoenix’s Deck D’Arcy and Laurent Brancowitz just days after the French rockers received their first Grammy nomination in the Best Alternative Album category for their fourth album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The nod is a rare accomplishment for a band from France — so rare, in fact, that the group were clueless about its significance. “We were playing a show in New York when suddenly the head of our label came in the dressing room and looked very serious, so he told u

Creed’s Stapp Talks Breakup, Make-Up and Shaved HeadIn his dressing room before Creed’s first gig of a two-month tour, frontman Scott Stapp was so calm, you’d think the hotly anticipated trek was a victory lap. But he knows they have a lot of work to do if they’re going to compete for their share of rock fans from the Nickelback-Daughtry nation that’s sprung up in their absence. “Right now, we have feel like we have a second chance to make a first impression as artists,” said Stapp, who’s weathered addiction and assorted trials since the band spl

Dave Matthews Band Grab Gregg Allman, New Tunes for Tour LaunchPhoto: Ewing/Retna Three separate times during his band’s sold-out show in New York last night, Dave Matthews posed a simple question to the audience: “Who starts a tour at Madison Square Garden?” It was as if it was the first time the Dave Matthews Band had ever played the legendary venue. And from the sound of the first few songs of the show, DMB seemed as if they were genuinely nervous playing in front of 20,000 fans, despite rocking the room numerous times in their career. Interpol Backstage at Madison Square Garden: Rolling Stone checks in with the band hours before their debut gig at New York's historic venueMon, Sep 17 2007 03:20 PDT Rolling Stone met up with Interpol just after they arrived at their surprisingly posh dressing room backstage at Madison Square Garden. The band recounted a brief history of their favorite dressing rooms. "There was a dressing room in Houston, Texas — it wasn't stylish, but it had atmosphere because it had been used over and over again. It had a little bit of a punk-rock history to it. Very rough around the edges," drummer Sam Fogarino remembered. Photo">
