New Rothbury Festival to Hit U.S. in July: Matthews, Mayer, Snoop, Modest Mouse A new, environmentally conscious music festival is about to hit the ever-growing U.S. market July 4th weekend: AEG Live (the folks behind Coachella) and Madison House Presents are introducing the Rothbury Festival, to be held in Rothbury, Michigan on July 3rd through 6th at the idyllic Double JJ Ranch near Lake Michigan. Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, Widespread Panic, Phil Lesh & Friends, Modest Mouse, 311 and Snoop Dogg are among the many confirmed acts, and organizers say the festival’s goal is to draw attention to climate change and clean energy alternatives. To wit, the weekend will feature a think tank featuring panel discussions on those climate concerns, an energy fair where attendees can get their hands on related technology and products, and the festivals’ campgrounds will strive for a zero-waste experience via composting, carbon-offsetting and more strategies (alternative lodging will also be available for festival-goers who don’t want to pitch a tent). For the initial lineup announcement — the fest promises more than seventy bands on eight stages — keep reading. The first batch of tickets go on sale February 27th at the fest’s official site. New York Times: Indie Rock Is Destroying America! New York Times columnist David Brooks – known for his smarmy tone, moderate conservative politics and half-baked cultural theories – has a new hypothesis for everything that’s wrong with our country: the Arcade Fire! According to Brooks, indie-rock is another symptom of the fragmentation of American society, because it’s a niche market for upper middle class weenies. Fair enough, you may say, but then he goes on to talk about how the music “stinks” because its “lost touch” with our “common roots” and because – take a breath – it is “considered inappropriate or even immoral for white musicians to appropriate African-American styles” these days. This is compared to the Sixties and Seventies, when it was okay for Mick Jagger to write “Brown Sugar,” or something like that. We’re all for calling out indie-rockers, but a couple things: Niche music for upper-middle-class elites is nothing new — anybody remember the Cambridge folk scene in the Fifties? It spurred a boom that produced one of those guys that Brooks might like, Bob Dylan. And somebody should tell those dudes in Chromeo that they’re being wildly inappropriate or immoral; if anything, most indie-rockers don’t try to make black music (i.e., hip-hop) these days because they still have bad memories of 311 from the Nineties. We look forward to Paul Krugman’s takedown of freak folk next week.

Pop Life: Like a Bon Jovi ballad, Antonella Barba has been living on a prayer week after weekCiao, Antonella. This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you. We’ll forget everything else on American Idol this season, but we’ll never forget the toothsome Sagittarian from Point Pleasant, New Jersey, the Italian girl who taught us what “Sowing the Seeds of Love” is all about. Like a Bon Jovi ballad come to life, Antonella Barba was livin’ on a prayer through week after week of tone-deaf awesomeness. But now we’re supposed to believe America just gave up on her? Sorry, but I don’t buy it. This was rigged — they just switched Antonella’s votes with Haley’s. What do we want? Recount! When do we want it? Now! Antonella wasn’t the worst singer on the show (take a bow, Gina G) or the most hideous egomaniac (adieu, Brandon), but, man, what a character. Every week was a new chapter in her life, full of heart-filled texts to her BFF, who declared, “She’s the least slutty person I know!” I miss her already. It’s tragic she got kicked off before she got a chance to dedicate Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” to the jerk who exposed her alleged sex photos, but that can wait for her own inevitable Fox show, How Do I Look? One thing is for sure: Idol is doomed without her, because she was the whole show. This is easily the worst cast ever, and if they had any sense, they’d scratch the results and start over. The only keepers are Lakisha, Melinda, maybe that sweet Jordin and Stephanie, too. But the rest? Where did they find Chris Sligh, playing Jack in Osbournes on Ice? Blake seemed cool with his Morrissey imitation, but he’s devolved into a scatting, skanking, 311-loving, improv-comedy-dabbling windbag. Phil the Bald Muppet always reminds me of the final scene in 2001. Sanjaya is obviously desperate to go home, but he’s a prisoner of his own cuteness, as he wows the old ladies with his Indian El DeBarge thing. Sorry, Sanjaya! No matter ho
