Evile bassist diesEvile bassist Mike Alexander tragically passed away last night (October 5). The four stringer (pictured second from the left) was suddenly taken ill a few days into his band's European tour with Amon Amarth and was rushed to hospital in Lulea, Sweden where he passed away. "This is so hard to find the words to express fully how we feel," said the band in an official statement. "We can't believe or accept what's happened. One minute we're talking to our buddy, Mike, the next minute we can never sp

Trey Anastasio Hints at Phish Reunion Nearly four years after their break-up, the four members of Phish may have some unfinished business together. In an interview with Rolling Stone last week, Trey Anastasio didn’t exactly say the band has talked about a reunion, but he did drop some heavy hints. “When Phish broke up, I made some comment about how I’m not gonna go around playing ‘You Enjoy Myself’ for the rest of my life,” Anastasio said with a laugh. “And it’s so funny because Fish and Mike and Page have been talking to each other a lot lately and now — it’s not that I can’t believe that I said that, but its symbolic of how much I lost my mind or how much I lost my bearings or something. Because at this point in time I would give my left nut to play that song five times in a row every day until I die. I certainly thought about that while I was in jail.” Anastasio spoke to RS on May 21st, the same day he received some good news: He was sentenced to probation on charges of possessing painkillers without a prescription, which had been reduced to a misdemeanor after he completed a drug treatment program. Earlier in May, Anastasio and the other members of Phish stood onstage together in New York to accept a lifetime achievement award at the Jammies. [Photo: Getty]

THE CRADLE DOES ROCKFOR TWO DECADES, the steel-cage Van Halen slap-down match has always been the who's-better battle between singers Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth - not any more. The question now is whether bassist Wolfgang Van Halen (Eddie's 17-year-old kid) is worthy to be part of one of rock's most revered bands. After all, the atomic punk just got his driver's license and still struggles with history classes in high school. On tour for nearly a year, and playing Madison Square Garden Friday - from a March 17 show rescheduled due to Eddie's health problems - Wolf says that during his first few shows, he felt there was an uneasy truce between him and fans of original bassist Michael Anthony. Now, "I feel the respect of the fans," he says in his first-ever solo interview. "They accept me as a band member, I'm not just Eddie's kid."Onstage, Wolfgang's bass work is powerful enough to keep up with the guitar pyrotechnics of his pop, the thunder of uncle Alex on drums and the antics of singer David Lee Roth."It isn't easy," he says. "If I look really serious onstage, it isn't a front, I'm really concentrating. The bass parts in a Van Halen song are a big space to fill. When I do miss a note, I know enough to just keep going."But don't be too quick to accuse him of screwing up a bass line you've grown accustomed to."I try to put my own spin on how I play the bass parts, but I don't want them to be too far from the originals - that would really freak people out." At the Garden, listen to Wolf's update of the "So This Is Love" bass riff. It's different, but it works."I wasn't sure about doing it" Wolf says, "but Dave heard it and said 'That's pretty cool,' so I kept it."While his bandmates' criticism and praise count, he has grown weary of advice."Backstage, people are always giving me pointers, but I'm really trying to make it up on my own, walk my own path," he says. "I know I'm young, but I feel like an equal to most of the people I meet."

The Cure Deliver A Devilish Good Time at Tour Opener in Virginia While pale, expressionless Robert Smith look-alikes skulked around Fairfax, Virginia’s Patriot Center at Friday night’s Cure show, the man himself appeared almost jovial as the band kicked off its North American tour. Click here for more photos from the Cure’s tour opener in Virginia Smith flashed the crowd a demonic schoolgirl grin often, did a bit of goofy dancing and even poked fun at his own stamina, mock-panting after pulling off high and long-held notes on both “From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea” and “The End of the World.” Although he wasn’t feeling festive enough to accept a peck from guitarist Porl Thompson (back for his third time around with the group) as they played the intro to “A Forest,” the frontman expressed the maximum level of giddiness appropriate for a career malcontent. The keyboard-less line-up of Smith, Thompson, bass player Simon Gallup and drummer Jason Cooper plowed through desolate material, such as “Prayers for Rain,” “A Strange Day” and “One Hundred Years” with the right amount of glum force, but concert-goers seemed more into cheery pop rather than the group’s moodier material from Disintegration or Pornography. “The Lovecats,” “Close to Me,” “Why Can’t I Be You?” and the similarly dance-party-themed “Freakshow” (from the band’s upcoming, as-of-yet untitled double disc) moved the crowd like nothing else. After the three hour, three encore set finally wrapped up just after midnight, Smith, who said barely a word all night, looked to be stifling a huge smile as he declared the first night of the tour “fucking excellent,” and his pale-faced army wholeheartedly agreed. Former Guns N' Roses drummer begs to rejoin bandEx-Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler, who entered a "no contest" plea to a charge of heroin possession at the Los Angeles Superior Court last Friday (November 14), has said he'd love to rejoin his old band. The tub thumper, who was sacked from Guns N' Roses in 1990 over drug problems, issued the following statement via his lawyer, Barry Gerald: "When he gets sober [Guns N' Roses will] accept him into the band and then they'll do a comeback album and a world tour - that's the dream of Steven Adler." Adler will reappear in court on December 12 for sentencing. In related news, former GN'R / current Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash and his wife have released a video backing gay marriage. The clip, which can be viewed below, features the guitarist playing the American national anthem while his wife, Perla Hudson, urges viewers to "Say no to hate and yes to equal rights." "I married my sweetheart, you should be able to marry yours too," she adds. Guns N' Roses long-awaited sixth studio album, Chinese Democracy, will be released in the UK next Monday (November 24).

Nicola wanted skin graft to be brown like rest of Girls AloudWe’ve always had a soft spot for Nicola from Girls Aloud, and now we think we love her even more. The pretty redhead has admitted that she used to have major issues with her pale skin, and that she would still consider having cosmetic surgery to fix the bump in her nose. Only two months ago, Nicola was still having regular spray tans to make her naturally pale skin appear darker, “Being pale was a massive insecurity for me,” she admits. The star was so frustrated by her colouring that she used to wish she could have a skin graft to turn her brown. Being surrounded by her uber-tanned band mates didn’t help her either. “I hated it, especially being against the other girls who were so tanned," she said. Thankfully, Nicola has now begun to accept that pale can be beautiful and is even creating a new make-up range for pale-skinned people as part of new show The Passions Of Girls Aloud. We’ve always thought you look gorgeous just as you are, Nicola.

Obama and the Insiders: Great Band Name, Bad Campaign SloganPhoto: Getty Now that Obama veep vetter Jim Johnson has resigned — after news broke that he'd taken … yawn … a favorable loan — the question becomes whether Obama will even be able to avoid tainting his platform of transformational reform with the business-as-usual politicians required in, you know, a presidential campaign. Will this simply be another instance of the superficial "outrage game," a careless, "boneheaded move" by Obama, or part of a larger narrative that follows Obama throughout the election? Let's go to the pundits!• The Wall Street Journal editorial board says: Obama-dogging narrative. The responses to all his "ex-friends" are similar: "bad judgment followed by an initial defense, then followed by rapid disassociation and regret that none of them were the men Mr. Obama 'knew.'" [WSJ] • Jim Hoagland thinks that though this amounts to a "media scandal," Obama's initial response was "disingenuous" and "ungracious." But he can't continue to expect "the media and the public to accept just about any explanation he gives." [WP] • Gail Collins calls the decision to appoint Johnson when there are basically an unlimited number of qualified candidates an "unnecessary disaster." But "one ridiculous decision doesn’t mean that Obama won’t be a good candidate." [NYT] • Michael Scherer says that there's a danger getting caught up in the "press-release gotcha game." Both campaigns know the point is "to create vague impressions in the minds of voters," like "How can McCain be a reformer if he works with lobbyists?" or "Isn't Obama a hypocrite for hiring such well-connected influence brokers?" But what matters is the differences between the candidates on the issues. [Time] • John Broder and Leslie Wayne write that the story "highlights the difficulties for Mr. Obama’s campaign in trying to live up to his promises to remain independent of the Washington establishment and the special interests that p

Van Halen Hot for Rock Hall, R.E.M. Also TappedVan Halen is preparing for a reunion. Like it or not. The notoriously feuding rock band was tapped Monday for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, joining alternative rockers R.E.M., the Ronettes, punk poet Patti Smith, and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the first rap act to ever make the cut. No word who among Van Halen will show up to accept the honor and perform. Van Halen is one of seven rock acts to have two albums sell more than $10 million copies in the U.S., ranking
