Artists Lend Voices to Obama CampaignThe night Barack Obama clinched the
Democratic nomination for president, Green Day's Billie Joe
Armstrong found himself experiencing an unfamiliar emotion: hope.
"After his acceptance speech, I have to admit, it took me an hour
to get the lump out of my throat," says Armstrong, whose band's
American Idiot was the defining protest album of the Bush
years. "Obama inspires people, and this country needs inspiration.
People are jaded, pissed off and embarrassed."

Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Moore/Getty We covered all angles of the Democratic National Convention — with the help of guest blogger Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie — from the performances by Sheryl Crow and Stevie Wonder to Tom Morello and Crosby & Nash to Rage Against the Machine and Kanye West. Plus, John Legend debuted a new song, Opeth won MySpace’s voter registration contest and our own National Affairs site live-blogged Obama’s entire acceptance speech. Kevin Cogill, that blogger who leaked the nine Chinese Democracy-bound tracks, had a rough week as he was arrested two months later for suspicion of violating copyright laws. If convicted, he faces five years in jail, the eternal wrath of Axl Rose and no Dr. Pepper. Still, the judge in the case doesn’t see what all the fuss about. At least Cogill has the long Labor Day weekend to look forward to. On the tenth anniversary of Lauryn Hill’s classic The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, we examined the groundbreaking album with an oral history courtesy of Hill’s collaborators, including John Legend, D’Angelo, Rohan Marley and the Fugees’ Pras. We took a ride with AC/DC on their “Rock N Roll Train,” even though it’s a runaway train running right off the track. The band also revealed their new album Black Ice will come in red, white and yellow (or blue, in the case of the deluxe edition.)

Random Notes: Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Amy Winehouse and the Week in RockPhoto: Williamson/Wireimage The week began with the Golden Globes, an awards ceremony deemed unnecessary by some (including our own movie guru, Peter Travers) and a source of hilarious (often drunken) acceptance speeches by others. The night proved a solid one for rock fans, as Bruce Springsteen walked away with a trophy for his contribution to The Wrestler, the moving track that accompanied the film’s end credits. During his speech, Springsteen thanked star Mickey Rourke for calling him up and roping him into the project. Rourke’s speech was slightly more remarkable: he thanked one Mr. W. Axl Rose for permitting the hard-up-for-cash film to use “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” and he shouted out his dogs. Mickey Rourke, we salute thee. But there’s more to this edition of Random Notes: Metallica spoke at a press conference following the announcement that they would be among the lucky few to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. James Hetfield seized the moment and noted that the band doesn’t want any drama during the induction — meaning they’ve reached out to former member Jason Newsted: ” Let’s celebrate. Let’s forget the crap.” Plus, Amy Winehouse hit the flying trapeze, Roger Daltry traded in Pete Townshend for Pete Doherty, Mariah Carey hit up the Sundance Film Festival and Lady Gaga was .. well, Lady Gaga. Stevie Wonder, Will.i.am, Sheryl Crow Close Out DNC FestivitiesPhoto: Getty When a recording of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born In the U.S.A.” blared through the speakers at Invesco Field at Mile High after Sen. Barack Obama’s acceptance speech Thursday night, it was official. Springsteen, rumored all week to close the final night, would not show. Thus did ex- Doobie Brother Michael McDonald have the last musical word a few hours earlier. Actually, the pre-Obama music was kind of a letdown: John Legend and Will.i.am brought YouTube to life with “Yes We Can,” complete with a huge live choir and Obama speaking on a video screen overhead. But all that activity on stage as delegates and spectators were filing in was confusing and the performance fell flat. Sheryl Crow did three songs with her band, opening with (altered for the occasion) “A Change Will Do Us Good.” Stevie Wonder did two, beginning with an unreleased obscurity, the hymnlike “Fear Can’t Put Dreams to Sleep,” then emphasizing “good-BYE” in his Motown chestnut “Signed, Sealed, and Delivered,” which might have been dedicated to John McCain and the Republicans. On the floor, near CNN’s podium, the Rev. Al Sharpton told Rolling Stone he first met Wonder at a concert by his friend, James Brown, in the early ’80s. Then he lamented the lack of cutting-edge hip-hop surrounding this Democratic campaign. “I know there was a lot more hip-hop presence in ‘04,” he said. The rev, by the way, has gospel, JB, Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige on his iPod. Queen Will Sell Charity Single, Bootsy Collins to Host Eclectic James Brown Tribute, J Records Drops “Idol” Studdard Queen will put their single “Say It’s Not True” on sale in the coming days to benefit Nelson Mandela’s AIDS charity, 46664. The track was originally available for free download during the days leading up to World Aids Day on December 1st, but high demand (including more than 100,000 downloads in the first weekend) led to its commercial release. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions will return to Cleveland, home of the rock hall’s museum, in 2009 after more than a decade in New York. After the March ‘09 ceremony, the annual event — which has only been held in Ohio once in the twelve years the museum has been open — could return to Cleveland every three years. In other ceremony news, the writers’ strike has caused organizers of the People’s Choice Awards to ditch its original format and introduce a news-magazine-like ceremony on January 8th featuring taped clips of winners making their acceptance speeches and answering pre-submitted fan questions. J Records has dropped 2003 American Idol winner Ruben Studdard, reports SOHH. Sales of his third record, last year’s The Return failed to match his Idol debut or his 2004 gospel release, and Studdard spent time last month acting in the play Heaven I Need a Hug. No immediate recording plans have been confirmed, and Studdard will next portray jazz legend Fats Waller in the national tour of Ain’t Misbehavin’. Bootsy Collins will host a James Brown tribute show this Saturday, three days before the one-year anniversary of Brown’s death, in Covington, KY, near Cincinnati. Proceeds will go towards rebuilding the first recording studio Brown worked in, Cincinnati’s King Records, as well as plans for a museum in Brown’s honor. Chuck D, Buckethead, rapper Lil’ Boosie, bassist Freekbass and the Soul Generals, Brown’s most recent band, will perform, and members of Brown’s original backing group the JB’s and his MC Danny Ray wil

Who do YOU think should win big at the Brits tonight? All across London, in hotel rooms, beauty salons and hairdressers, a whole host of celebs are getting prepared for one of the biggest nights on the music-award circuit – the Brits! Yes, we're now only hours away from finding out who is going to walk away with those pretty trophies, so we thought it was about time we had another look at who's been nominated and get all excited about it. Up for the Best British Male we have Ian Brown, Paul Weller, Will Young, The Streets (is that one male?) and James "gonna get f***ed!" Morrison. Has there ever been a Brits year when Paul Weller wasn't nominated in this category? We don't think so. Anyway, fighting it out for the Best British Female it's Adele, Beth Rowley, Duffy, Estelle and MIA – although we doubt she'll be there, having just given birth. Another hotly-contested category on the night is always the Best British Single, and this year Coldplay, Duffy, Girls Aloud, Leona and Scouting For Girls will all be keeping their fingers crossed that you've voted for them to win. The award we're most excited about has to be the one for Best British Band, namely because they're all pretty fantastic. Nominated are Girls Aloud, Coldplay, Take That, Radiohead and Elbow. Who do you want to take the most awards home tonight? As well as all the amazing music performances and (hopefully) embarrassing acceptance speeches to look forward to, there's also all the red-carpet outfits to gaze at. Luckily for us, ITV2 will be covering all the arrivals from 6pm tonight, before ITV1 takes over when the main show begins at 8pm. That's basically your whole evening sorted. Are you excited?

Manic Street Preachers guitarist “presumed dead”The family of Manic Street Preachers guitarist / lyricist Richey James Edwards were granted a court order for him to be declared “presumed dead”, 13 years after he went missing. Edwards disappeared on February 1, 1995 from a London hotel where he had been staying. His abandoned car was discovered a few days later near the Severn Bridge. Despite a series of alleged sightings over the years, it is widely believed that Edwards committed suicide. He was 27. Under English and Welsh law, a missing person can be declared presumed dead after seven years, however the guitarist’s parents, Graham and Sherry Edwards, have taken nearly twice that length of time to do so. The family’s lawyer, David Ellis, told Welsh news site www.walesonline.co.uk that their decision is “not the same as an acceptance that he is dead," but an “acceptance that his affairs have got to be sorted" The Manic Street Preachers have continued to pay Edwards a share of the band’s royalties since his disappearance, and with the court order, his family will be able to gain control over his estate which is estimated to be worth just under £380,000 after death duties. A spokesperson for the remaining members of the band – frontman/guitarist James Dean Bradfield, bassist Nicky Wire and drummer Sean Moore – said the move was “hugely emotional” and added that “it is no longer a realistic hope [that Edwards is still alive] and if this offers some kind of closure then the band will be content with that.” Manic Street Preachers are currently working on their ninth studio album, Journal For Plague Lovers, with producer Steve Albini (Nirvana, Iggy And The Stooges Scott Weiland). The record, which will be released next year, will entirely feature lyrics written by Edwards before his disappearance.

Hugh Jackman Teases Oscargoers With 'Nightclub Of Your Dreams' [Oscars]We've heard lots of vague allusions to the "intimacy" and "coziness" promised by this year's Oscar reinventors, but Hugh Jackman prefers to be a little more specific. And by "a little," regrettably, we mean it. Revelations of golden Snuggies and Oscar-branded slippers were not among those forthcoming today from the rookie Oscar host; think more along the lines of Jack Nicholson falling asleep in a recliner before presenter Amy Adams nudges him awake with her foot — from the podium: The look of the theater is very different. It's more like the nightclub of your dreams. It's very intimate. ... It's got to be a lot closer. It's been a little austere in the past. You know, there's that stage, the host being up above the stalls, looking down at everybody. ... But this is a lot more intimate. It's still spectacular, being in the Kodak Theatre. But it's a real difference in the way things are laid out. So you know what this means: No Oscar cannons, just the A-listers passing the craft awards back through the crowd to winners who'll shout their acceptance speech until the 20-piece orchestra onstage drowns them out with big-band adaptations of themes from Slumdog Millionaire and The Dark Knight. And you can break out your blow right there in your seat. What did we miss? Hugh Jackman plans for 'intimate' Oscars [AP]

Coldplay Favored To Collect Multiple Grammys, Subpoenas This Weekend [Celeb Jurisprudence]The moody pop/performance-art troupe Coldplay is getting ready for one of the biggest weekends of its career, rehearsing Grammy acceptance speeches even as its members prepare to dodge Joe Satriani's legal wrath. Satriani is reportedly still upset about the British quartet's "Viva La Vida," which boasts a curiously similar melody to one of the guitar icon's '90s masterworks. The ensuing controversy — complete with fan-cultivated evidence and Coldplay leader Chris Martin's infamous "Moe Batriani" kiss-off — had subsided and was thought settled in Wanker Court or wherever such tussles are typically resolved. But now we know Satriani, like a snake lurking in the tall, think awards-season grass, was simply priming his legal minions for a spectacular sneak attack. Behold — the Grambush: [A]ttorney Howard King of King Paterno et al [...] claims that Coldplay has dodged being served, and that the Grammys are the easiest forum at which to strike while the iron is hot. King says, "We have warned their British lawyers that we have hired a fleet of process servers lined up to dog the band everywhere they go this weekend in the hopes of serving them." King even promises to have camera crews roaming around with the process servers to get the whole thing on tape. Finally! A reason to watch the Grammys. Still, the strategy seems to entail a lot of work that could probably be consolidated into a single incident like the one that befell Bob Dylan in 1998, with the stage-crashing antics of "Soy Bomb" upgraded to involve four process servers with subpoenas painted in fine print on their bare chests. Either that, or Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift can lyrically duet the documents in the band's direction in a 10-minute awardscast filibuster. Either/or, we'll take whatever.
