Pink Floyd Win Battle to Halt Single-Song Download SalesPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty Pink Floyd have won their lawsuit over single-song downloads against EMI, effectively halting the digital sale of the band’s individual tracks. As Rolling Stone reported yesterday, under the terms of a 1999 contract that predated iTunes and other digital-music retailers, the band mandated its songs could not be offered outside the context of their original albums. EMI argued that the contract only covered physical and not digital releases. In the end, the judge

Mars Volta and Mastodon Pummel the Outside Lands FestivalPhotograph by Chris Tuite for RollingStone.com The Mars Volta wrapped day two at Outside Lands’ Twin Peaks stage with a thundering and delirious 90-minute set that drew Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo and their U.K. tourmates Mastodon to the side of the stage to gawk. The band, led by Omar Rodríguez-López and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, maxed out allowable sound levels with their theatrical, histrionic brand of meandering, mystical loud-soft prog-metal. Set against a patterned bac

Smashing Pumpkins - Zeitgeist Artist: Smashing Pumpkins Review: Zero: That is the exact number of doubts singer-guitarist-songwriter Billy Corgan has about this controversial resurrection of his old band. "I never felt so right and good. . . . You'll never need another sound," he crows in that bleating voice against the titanic fuzz of "Bring the Light." It is classic Corgan bravado, but the cumulative effect of his distortion-orchestra guitar and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin's pinpoint thunder is impressive and convincing, a return to the big pop-wise din of 19... Rage Against the Machine Schedule Show Near Republican ConventionFollowing their near-riot-inducing performance at this weekend’s Lollapalooza, Rage Against the Machine have scheduled another concert they probably hope has similar results. The band announced that they’ll perform in Minneapolis’ Target Center on September 3rd, which is significant because that’s the same week the Republican National Convention rolls into the Twin City of St. Paul. In 2000, the band played an outdoor show in Los Angeles during the Democratic National Convention, and that show ended with police using tear gas and pepper spray. In the announcement of the Minneapolis show, Rage made no mention of the political overtones their show will carry, but Tom Morello has already revealed he will play a union rally with Steve Earle in St. Paul on September 1st, the first day of the RNC. Protest isn’t free, though: tickets for Rage’s show in Prince’s hometown are $60 and go on sale Saturday. [Photo: Getty]

Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyThe Jonas Brothers made the leap from puberty to Rolling Stone cover boys this week. We went behind-the-scenes of the band’s cover shoot, put the group’s short history in photo gallery form, excerpted the cover story and even delved into their secret love life. Nas celebrated Untitled’s chart victory in typical Nas fashion: By protesting and petitioning against the Fox’s “racist” news coverage. Metallica revealed “The Unforgiven” still have not been forgiven, as “The Unforgiven III” was listed among the dark song titles on the band’s upcoming Death Magnetic track list. The band’s epic search for forgiveness continues when the album drops in September. This week, we saw Linkin Park on the Projekt Revolution tour, the Rock the Bells tour, Malkmus at the Siren Festival, George Clinton’s 67th birthday party with Sly Stone, Karen O’s Native Korean Rock, She & Him, Randy Newman, Miley Cyrus next door to our office and prepared to see Nine Inch Nails. Single Minded: Danity Kane, Foo Fighters and Sesame StreetVarious Artists, Sesame St. Songs [Covers] Proof that even Barenaked Ladies and Steven Tyler were children once. Foo Fighters, “Bargain” [Who Cover] Strange twists abound: Foo Fighters start a cover of the Who’s “Bargain,” then Dave Grohl cedes the mike to… Supergrass’s Gaz Coombes. We haven’t got a thing against Supergrass, but on a long list of likely surprise guest vocalists, Gaz ranks somewhere below Side of Ham. Diplo & Santogold, Top Ranking [Mixtape] If, for some inconceivable reason, you don’t have the Santogold record yet, this mixtape of dubs and re-workings (including a re-imagining of “Guns of Brixton”) should pacify you until you come to your senses. Danity Kane, “Damaged” [Mr. Gaspar Remix] Elevator pitch: Re-Making the Band, in which Diddy auditions a team of remixers to help breathe life into previous seasons’ victories. May Mr. Gaspar be at the top of that list. Harry Belafonte, “Jump in the Line” [John Bourke Bmore Remix] Once again, it’s Baltimore for the win — hyper-caffeinated remix of this Harry Belafonte standard creates brave new genre: apocalypso.

Conchords, Kimmel, “Idol” Grab Emmy Noms A pair of Flight of the Conchords songs will compete for an Emmy at this year’s awards ceremony for television excellence. Both “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)” and “Inner City Pressure” from the band’s self-titled HBO series were nominated in the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics category. The duo will have some serious competition though, as the viral hit “I’m F***ing Matt Damon,” performed by Sarah Silverman and the Bourne Identity star for Jimmy Kimmel Live, was also picked among the five finalists. Another f***ing song was also nominated in the Outstanding Picture Editing of Clip Packages for Talk, Performance, Award or Reality Competition Series. In that category, “I’m F***ing Matt Damon” and Kimmel’s response-song “I’m F***ing Ben Affleck” will curiously compete against the “David Cook Goes Home” segment from this year’s American Idol. AI was the beneficiary of many nods, including Outstanding Reality Competition Program, Outstanding Sound Editing, Outstanding Technical Direction and Outstanding Host for Ryan Seacrest.
