Animal Collective: Most viewed pictures

Breaking: YeasayerWho: Electro-tribal trio who formed in Baltimore, where singer Chris Keating and guitarist Anand Wilder attended prep school. The group bonded over seeing shows by classmates Animal Collective and turned a 2008 LSD trip in New Zealand (with singer-bassist Ira Wolf Tuton) into the inspiration behind their latest disc Odd Blood, which positions them as the next weird-ass band to break out of the Brooklyn scene. Sounds Like: The band’s new LP is a dizzying, hyperdetailed mix of heady prof-rock, New

Hype Monitor: Fever Ray, New Villager and Ghost HunterEvery week, Hype Monitor wades through the most buzzed-about bands all across the Internet to find the ones you need to hear now. The Band: Fever Ray The Buzz: Solo outing of Karin Andersson of Swedish electro-Gothers the Knife. Sounds kind of like the Knife. Listen If: Grey is your favorite color, or grim is your favorite mood. Key Track: “If I Had a Heart,” a bleak, pulsing funeral march where Andersson’s wisp-of-smoke voice curls around fat blue bands of synth. The Band: New Villager The Buzz: Bi-coastal duo bang out brawny indie pop. Listen If: You wish Animal Collective’s fangs were a bit sharper. Key Track: “Rich Doors,” a thumping combo of mantra-like vocals, tribal percussion and cascading keyboards — it’s “Life in a Northern Town” writ very, very small. The Band: Ghost Hunter The Buzz: It’s all eerie: weird wind chimes, whistling keyboards and thudding percussion combine to create the sound of the woods at night. Listen If: You’re looking for a good accompaniment for your next bout of hypnosis. Key Track: “Through the Haze of the Green Glasses,” which is nothing but weird soprano synthesizers and off-kilter percussion — like a Kate Bush song without Kate Bush.

Animal Collective’s “Merriweather Post Pavilion” Streaming Now On RhapsodyPhoto: Gries/Getty Animal Collective’s weirdly breathtaking Merriweather Post Pavilion is quickly becoming one of 2009’s most acclaimed albums. Now, five days before the CD hits stores, you can stream the Baltimore/Brooklyn band’s ninth album in its entirety over at Rhapsody. Yes, we know the album is already out on vinyl and has been distributed illegally over the Internet, but if you don’t have a record player and like listening to music without a guilty conscience, this stream of MPP is the way to go. Enjoy the psychedelic sounds of the Beach Boys-inspired “Brother Sport” and “Guys Eyes,” described in our three-and-a-half star album review as “a cauldron of the Pet Sounds vocal fractals.” Our review says “Lion in a Coma” and “No More Runnin’” “get lost in their own weirdness” but here’s a second opinion: we think those songs are the highlight of Merriweather. Agree or disagree? Does Animal Collective warrant all the hype surrounding this release? Check out Rhapsody’s exclusive Merriweather Post Pavilion album stream and leave your review in the comments. "Hey Venus!" by Super Furry AnimalsWell before Animal Collective captivated the blogosphere with their pop subversion, another group of costume-wearing animals won over critics by running their pop hooks through a filter of artful wackiness. Super Furry Animals never pushed the mainstream away, though; after all, they even (mostly) stopped singing songs in Welsh after their early years. Their eighth album amplifies their accessibility further, focusing largely on good-natured pop with bubbly hooks and psychedelic embellishments in all the right places. After kicking off with the nutty "Gateway Song," frontman Gruff Rhys bites into "Run-Away," nailing the soaring chorus while the band raises a Spector-like ruckus. Nods to The Beach Boys continue in the effervescent harmonies on "Show Your Hand" and "The Gift That Keeps Giving." While these pretty, perfectly executed pop songs don't push the band's boundaries, it's hard to imagine a better opening sequence. Throughout, Rhys sounds like a songwriter
