Single Minded: Death Cab Cover the Cure, Gaslight Anthem Rule “Letterman”Photo: Winter/WireImage Death Cab for Cutie, “Love Song” [Cure Cover] One sad face deserves another: Ben Gibbard provides further proof that everyone who grew up in the suburbs owned a copy of Disintegration. If only he and Death Cab could swoop in and save Robert Smith from himself. The Gaslight Anthem, “The ‘59 Sound” [Live on Letterman] We’ve had this longstanding rule that no live band sounds good on TV. And then we saw NJ’s Gaslight Anthem on Letterman and concluded that either a) our rule was wrong, b) they are, in fact, the band of our generation, or c) some combination thereof. Absolutely breathtaking. The Police, “Roxanne” [Discotech Remix] Heart-stopping and electrifying, Discotech paint the Police bright pink and take them for a night on the town. Charlie Ash, “I Wanna Sex You Up” [Color Me Badd Cover] The critical reappraisal of Color Me Badd begins right here, with this aggro cover of their most grammatically improbable hit. Various Artists, “The Covers Mixtape” [Covers] Fourteen artists tackling 14 songs that aren’t their own, all of them handling their source material with class and panache. Start with Steve Earle’s rollicking punk/country cover of “Breed” and work outwards from there.

Fricke’s Picks: Six Organs of Admittance The Road to Nirvana In one school of Buddhist thought, the six organs of admittance — the five senses plus the soul — are, in perfect union, the way to enlightenment. In here-and-now psychedelia, Six Organs of Admittance, the decade-old blend of band and solo project founded by California-born singer-guitarist Ben Chasny, is a bliss unto itself: chantlike Indo-folk songs that emerge from winding-staircase guitar patterns laced with carefully tailored distortion and angel-song feedback. Shelter From the Ash (Drag City) was released last year but has been excellent company on recent winter nights, with a concise, intimate warmth and unexpected vocal starshine from Elisa Ambrogio of Magik Markers. There is an abundance of cleansing guitar fire, especially in the hovering howl of “Final Wing,” but Chasny sets it back in the mix, lighting the road to nirvana without incinerating it. Chasny, who also plays with Comets on Fire, dedicates this album to a late uncle who introduced him to the music of?Iron Maiden. That doesn’t contradict the beauty here. It just shows there’s more than one path to guitar heaven. [Photo: Kami Chasny]

"Go Away White" by BauhausHow goth is it to announce the finality of your new album in advance, setting it up as a funeral rather than a return? Bauhaus may have disappointed many with the briefness of its reunion, but at least the seminal, black-nail-polished quartet produced something of lasting value in their 18-day recording session. Each of the ten songs was recorded as a first take, with the full band playing in one room, and it’s no surprise to learn that, given their darkly jamm-y tone. There’s less disco here than on The Sky's Gone Out, but most of us want to dance less as we get older. Instead, vocalist Peter Murphy starts with a phrase or word that he repeats over and over ("adrenalin," "international bullet-proof talent," "the dog's a vapour") providing the title of a song. Then Daniel Ash wraps sharp, titanium-colored guitar phrases around Murphy’s attempts to wring the most out of each variation in emphasis while Kevin Haskins and David J lay a solid, but not stolid, foundation of bass and drums.
