The Flaming Lips Walk (Really Fast) Onto BroadwayA few weeks ago we broke the news that Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne has been collaborating with Tony-Award winning director/producer Des McAnuff to turn the band’s 2002 album Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots into a Broadway musical. Now there are reports that the project has an official and unlikely scribe: “West Wing” and “Studio 60″ creator Aaron Sorkin. (Apparently McAnuff, who will be overseeing the show, recommended Sorkin for the job after directing the TV

Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily Coldplay’s Chris Martin took over our front cover. In an excerpt from the Rolling Stone interview, Martin talks Viva La Vida, plus we shot behind-the-scenes footage of the cover shoot, assembled a photo history of the band live and talked about the band being beamed from space. The Chocolate Factory will remain open, as R. Kelly was found not guilty of child pornography charges. You can reminisce about all the courtroom drama, missing moles and unreliable witnesses here. Pearl Jam kicked off their U.S. tour in stormy West Palm Beach, Florida, then worked out a deal with Verizon so you can make a ringtone out of their concerts as they head on down to Bonnaroo. Speaking of Bonnaroo… The Tennesee festival kicked off last night with Vampire Weekend debuting a new song and Battles getting funky. We talked mushrooms and hippie dancing with MGMT and much more, so stay tuned for everything going down at Bonnaroo this weekend, including sets from Metallica, the Raconteurs, Kanye West and My Morning Jacket. On the Bus With Paolo Nutini: Kid Rock Stories, Drinks, “Guitar Hero” Battles After Amy Winehouse called her tour off due to that pesky exhaustion problem, twenty-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini forged ahead alone for what is now a headlining tour of North America. “New Shoes” Nutini (who is now booked for the Led Zeppelin-headling tribute show to his record label mentor, Ahmet Ertegun) let Rock & Roll Daily take a look inside his tour bus before his show at the Fillmore in New York last night. Twelve people are packed onto the bus for a tour that already seen Nutini playing with Elvis Costello and Feist, and partying with VMAs lightweight champ Kid Rock. Unfortunately, Nutini insisted that the band had “obviously hidden the drugs and guns” before we hopped aboard, but take a look at our photo tour to get a taste of the singer’s drinking philosophy, Guitar Hero insecurities and tales of buses that keep moving without drivers.

Morrissey Turned Down Mega-Bucks Smiths Reunion Offer Over Johnny Marr Morrissey has once again broken the hearts of millions of already-damaged Smiths fans by refusing to reunite the band. The Mozzer’s publicist has confirmed that the crooner declined a $75 million offer to tour as the Smiths in 2008 and/or 2009 even though the only requirement was that Johnny Marr also be a part of the reunion. What does this new information tell us? That the theory surmising that Morrissey’s legal battles with former Smith Mike Joyce were behind his resistance to reuniting the band is flawed. Apparently Morrissey isn’t up for any kind of Smiths reunion … yet. In the meantime, Marr is still an integral part of Modest Mouse, and Joyce is counting the Smiths back pay and royalties he collected in 1996 and releasing an album with his latest band, Vinny Peculiar, in October.

Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??” Voted Official Oklahoma Rock SongPhoto: Mazur/WireImage Evidently, Oklahoma has spent the past two years working on a very important legislative matter: the nomination and confirmation of the Flaming Lips‘ “Do You Realize??” as the state’s official rock song. According to a press release from the Oklahoma Historical Society, the state’s legislature voted to affirm the track’s importance, putting Wayne Coyne and Co. in the history books for real as part of Senate Joint Resolution 24. The 2002 track from Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots beat out some stiff competition: the 10 finalists that were “representative of the pervasive influence of Oklahoma and Oklahomans on the development of rock & roll” included “Let’s Have a Party” by Wanda Jackson (1958); “Walk Don’t Run” by The Venture (1960); “Endless Oklahoma Sky” by John Moreland and the Black Gold Band (2008); “Home Sweet Oklahoma” by Leon Russell (1971); “Move Along” by the All-American Rejects (2005); “Never Been to Spain” written by Hoyt Axton (1971); “Oklahoma” by The Call (1986); “Heartbreak Hotel” written by Mae Boren Axton (1956); and “After Midnight” by J.J. Cale (1965). An official Official Oklahoma Rock Song Advisory Panel was convened in 2007 to recognize the role the state has played in rock history and after the nominations were gathered in 2008 (2,498 were submitted for 458 different tunes) and narrowed down to 10 by the panel, the public voted on the Website oklahomarocksong.org. When the 21,061 votes were counted, the Lips were on top. In case you were wondering, voters submitted comments, too, which include “The beauty in the message of ‘Do You Realize??’ perfectly suits the beautiful state of Oklahoma.”

U2 “Spider-Man” Musical Swinging Onto Broadway February 2010Photo: Parra/FilmMagic(Bono), Honda/AFP/Getty (Spiderman) The planned Spider-Man musical, featuring music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and the Edge, will make its Broadway debut in February 2010. Previews of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark start January 16th, with the musical’s official starting date February 18th at the Hilton Theatre. Julie Taymor, director of film musical Across the Universe, is set to direct. Bono and the Edge assuredly had no shortage of material to contribute to the musical — they’re incredibly prolific these days, penning 50 to 60 songs during their No Line on the Horizon recording sessions. The real test for the Irish band’s comic book knowledge surely came into play when they wrote the musical’s lyrics. We’re hoping for a tender eight-arms-to-hold-you ballad sung by Dr. Octopus. While no casting announcements have been made yet, The Wrestler actress Evan Rachel Wood has long lobbied for the role of Peter Parker’s girlfriend Mary Jane. Wood appeared in Taymor’s Across the Universe alongside actor Jim Sturgess, who has been rumored to play Peter Parker. According to the press release, “Spider-Man’s battles will hurtle the audience through an origin story both recognizable and unexpected—yielding new characters as well as familiar faces—until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light on this hero’s journey.” Rolling Stone will have more details about the Spider-Man musical in the next issue, so keep an eye on stands. Levon Helm “Thrilled” Black Crowes Will Record New LP at His Ramble StudioPhoto: Arnold/Wireimage (Robinson), McCarthy/Wireimage (Helm) The Black Crowes will record new, original material for an upcoming album during four sold-out concerts at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York, in February and March. This run of performances at the recording studio built decades ago by the 2008 Grammy winner and former drummer for the Band are being billed as “Cabin Fever Winter 2009.” The shows on February 21, 22, 28 and March 1 sold out in less than two days. “We’re thrilled,” Helm, who’s not scheduled to perform, tells Rolling Stone. “It kind of shows me that we’re doing things right.” Over the last few years Helm has staged “Midnight Ramble” house concerts at the studio — Saturday night performances Rolling Stone named Best Jam Session that feature special guests sitting in with the Levon Helm Band, including Elvis Costello, Phish bassist Mike Gordon and Crowes frontman Chris Robinson. Prior to singing on “Shake Your Money Maker” and “The Weight” last August, Robinson milled about in the crowd throughout the evening. “When Chris sat in, it was just more of that good stuff,” Helm says. “His contribution just added to the whole mix. The whole night was a high point.” The Black Crowes have another tie to the area, too: they recorded this year’s Warpaint at nearby Allaire Studios. David Fricke profiled the band for a Rolling Stone story earlier this year in which Rich Robinson admitted his relationship with brother Chris is still difficult: “Outside of music, we probably would never speak to each other.” Related Stories: • The Band Drummer Levon Helm Rambles On • Black Crowes Sue Gretchen Wilson Over “Saving Grace” Commercial • Levon Helm Battles Back From Cancer and Tragedy

Gnarls Barkley Headline 150th MySpace Secret Show in NYC “It is extremely hot,” said Cee-Lo Green from the stage of the Filmore at Irving Plaza in New York City last night. He wasn’t kidding. Show-goers who stumbled from the main floor into the hallway in search of precious fresh air looked like they’d just stepped out of a swimming pool — hair matted, clothes soaked straight through. The occasion was the 150th MySpace Secret Show, an event that — bizarrely — paired Green’s band Gnarls Barkley with brutal New York math rock outfit Battles. Like all MySpace Secret Shows, there was no way to purchase tickets for the event. Interested parties had to add the Secret Show profile to their MySpace “Top 8″ in order to receive instructions on where and when to pick up the wristbands that gained them complimentary admission to the show. “I want to give these kids memories,” explained MySpace music editor Isac Walter. “These shows are designed for me, as a kid. If my favorite band was playing for free, in a venue like Irving Plaza instead of Madison Square Garden, fuck yeah, I’d stand in line.” By the looks of the crowd — capped, Walter said, at 1,050 — a lot of people shared his sentiment. The larger question was how two headliners so musically polarized would appeal to the sweltering crowd. “I honestly don’t get it,” laughed Battles fan Nadia Standard, 26. “The bands are from two different worlds. I’m curious to see how the 16-year-old Gnarls fans and the musichead Battles fans interact.” Seth Dukes, 22, felt differently. “I think it totally fits,” he said. “Battles is ‘out there,’ Gnarls is ‘out there.’ Both bands are, musically, on the edge.” As it turned out, he was right. Though their initial squall of feedback may have disoriented some attendees, almost everyone was won over by the end of their manic set. Gnarls Barkley, needless to say, didn
