Earth, Wind & Fire Team Up With Chicago For Joint Summer TourPhoto: Bedder/Getty Two more classic acts are teaming up for a 30-city co-headlining tour: Earth, Wind & Fire and ">Chicago will head out together starting June 5th. The two long-lasting bands also set out on a joint tour in 2004-2005. Each night, both groups will perform a full set apiece, then it’ll be Earth, Wind & Fire & Chicago for the final set as all the musicians hit the stage together. EW&F have enjoyed a renaissance of late, no doubt helped out by big fan President Obama recently having the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers perform at the White House. The prolific Chicago have gone platinum with 25 out of their 30 albums. We’re calling this the Revolving Door Tour, as if you combined the total number of band members both Earth, Wind & Fire and Chicago have employed in the past four decades, it’d be somewhere in the 50s. With the slumping economy expected to seep into the summer touring business, multi-artists tours like Poison, Def Leppard and Cheap Trick and REO Speedwagon, .38 Special and Styx are becoming a necessity on the circuit. The dates for the E,W&F and Chicago tour are below. June 5 - Orange Beach, AL @ The Amphitheater June 6 - Atlanta, GA @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre June 9 - Charlotte, NC @ Time Warner Cable Arena June 10 - Washington, D.C. @ Merriweather Post Pavilion June 12 - Atlantic City, NJ @ Borgata Event Center June 13 - Atlantic City, NJ @ Borgata Event Center June 14 - Bethel, NY @ Bethel Performing Arts Center June 16 - Boston, MA @ Agganis Arena June 17 - New York, NY @ Madison Square Garden June 19 - Ledyard, CT @ MGM Grand Theatre at Foxwoods June 20 - Verona, NY @ Turning Stone Resort Casino June 21 - Columbus, OH @ Value City Arena June 23 - Indianapolis, IN @ Conseco Fieldhouse June 24 - Detroit, MI @ DTE Energy Music Theatre June 26 - Chicago, IL @ Allstate Arena June 28 - Kansas City, MO @ Sprint Center June 30 - Milwaukee, WI @ Summerfest July 1 - Minneapolis, MN @ Target Center July 10 - Houston, TX @ The Cynthia Woods M

Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Judas Priest Prove Their Metal Mastery on Long IslandWhen two of the singers who most define the genre are in the house, calling a tour featuring Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Motorhead the “Metal Masters Tour” doesn’t have even a hint of hyperbole. The ashen skies threatened to open at any moment at Long Island’s Jones Beach Theater on Sunday, but even though lightning crackled in the distance during Judas Priest’s night-closing set, the evening remained dry. The band only pulled out one song from this year’s Nostradamus, so the rest of the set was dedicated to the glory days of yore. Apart from the old standbys (”Breaking the Law,” “Metal Gods,” “Hell Bent for Leather”), the deeper cuts provided some of the evening’s finer moments, especially a thunderous rendition of “Dissident Aggressor” and “Hell Patrol,” an unjustly forgotten number from the Painkiller album. Though the ticket read “Heaven and Hell,” a Ronnie James Dio-fronted Black Sabbath is still Black Sabbath. Guitarist Tony Iommi appeared in great spirits, cracking a huge smile while carving out the jagged solo on “I” (some of those Dehumanizer tracks are a lot better than you may remember). Dio was in fantastic voice, sounding more like one-third of his alleged 66 years, especially on “Children of the Sea” and “Heaven and Hell,” the set’s closing number. As always, Motorhead was Motorhead, and that’s all it takes. From a breakneck “Going to Brazil” to “Killed By Death” and the unstoppable closing one-two punch of “Ace of Spades” and “Overkill,” Lemmy Kilmister’s gravel throat has retained every bit of its charm, and his band is still top-notch. The only downer of the evening is that the audience skewed so far towards the older side, as kids with heavy metal dreams would be well advised to sign up for an evening of education and learn from the best. Dan Deacon Talks New Album “Bromst”: “It’s Not Dance Music”Photo: Kisby/Getty On his last album, Spiderman of the Rings, Baltimore electronic-music maven Dan Deacon threw a giddy neon dance party — sort of like kids’ music for very hip kids, complete with Woody Woodpecker samples. On the follow-up, Bromst, arriving March 24th via Carpark Records, he aimed for a more substantial sound. “If the first record was like some tasty hors d’oerves, this is the meal,” Deacon said on the phone from his hometown, where he just wrapped up the Baltimore Round Robin tour, featuring several of the city’s critically acclaimed new bands, including Beach House and Double Dagger. Bromst, which Deacon spent three years writing and recording, uses more acoustic instrumentation, including marimba, glockenspiel, winds and brass, and fewer gimmicky samples than its predecessor, giving it a more lush, organic vibe. But Deacon, who built a scene largely around high-energy live shows, says the new sounds won’t stop people from grooving. “I think people can dance to it, but it’s not as much ‘dance music,’ ” he says. “It’s less about dance and more about motion.” Last spring Rolling Stone named Deacon’s Baltimore scene one of the Best of Rock, and also spotlighted the red-hot female MC duo Get Em Mamis and onetime RS Breaking band Beach House. For more on those artists, click here. The Bromst track list — which includes a song for Gwen Stefani, perhaps? — is right here: 1. “Build Voice” 2. “Red F” 3. “Paddling Ghost” 4. “Snookered” 5. “Of The Mountains” 6. “Surprise Stefani” 7. “Wet Wings” 8. “Woof Woof” 9. “Slow With Horns / Run For Your Life” 10. “Baltihorse” 11. “Get Older” Related Stories: • The Best of Baltimore • CMJ 2007 Live Report: Dan Deacon

Pearl Jam Showcase Rarities, Politics, Dylan and Who Covers at Bonnaroo While most bands used Bonnaroo as a platform to play hits, Pearl Jam used their Saturday night closing set to unleash some rarities. Around 10:15 p.m., the band strolled onto the stage and unleashed “Hard to Imagine,” a gorgeous ballad that the band has only played a few dozen times since 1992. Later on, they turned out jams like “W.M.A,” and monster covers of the Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” and Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower.” Vedder — who earlier had joined Jack Johnson on a duet of the beach bum’s jam “Constellations” — got political at points during Pearl Jam’s set. Before the band performed “Gone,” Vedder spoke critically about the conspicuous rise in gas prices since George Bush took over the White House. And later, he urged the crowd to get out and vote (presumably for Barack Obama) in the November election. “A song cannot change the world,” he declared. “But this many people can change the world. How do we know? It is stitched into the fabric of our flag and it is welded into our constitution that we have the right and the responsibility to make change.” Of course, portions of the crowd were upset by Vedder’s proclamations — Bonnaroo, after all, is located in Tennessee, the heart of Bush Country. One dude even shouted, “You’re a dipshit,” before storming off the grounds. But Vedder’s political statements didn’t get in the way of their awesome set, which also featured tunes like “Black,” “Why Go,” “Even Flow” and “Corduroy.” During a cover of Victoria Williams’ haunting ballad “Crazy Mary” — which includes the lyrics “Take a bottle/ drink it down/ pass it around” — Vedder hopped off the stage to share his bottle of red wine with kids in the front row. The highlight of the band’s set was “Betterman,” during which the crowd ignited lighters and shouted along to the words, drowning out the band. Vedder seemed visibly touched by the sight, saying, “That’s fucking beautiful, man!” [Photo: Getty]

Smoking Section: Jack Johnson on the Beach, Midlake in the Studio and Jimmie Dale Gilmore on Stage In December, the Smoking Section winged it out to Santa Barbara to hang out with Jack Johnson. Sitting on the rocky coastline with a fat spliff in our mitts watching Johnson shred massive swells was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the wild ride that was 2007. We witnessed amazing performances — Lucinda Williams‘ five-night stand in Manhattan, Stevie Wonder at the Garden, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the Hamptons, Pearl Jam in Chicago, Wilco at Bonnaroo, The Killers in London and the Foo Fighters in a Vegas hotel room (sadly, we missed Dave Grohl’s “New Year’s Eve Disco Party” in L.A.). We moved into Kid Rock’s Malibu bachelor pad for a few days, tore up Paris with Ben Harper, guzzled absinthe at Marilyn Manson’s house and embraced our inner player, cocktailing with Snoop, strip-clubbing with Kanye and l’chaim-ing Jay-Z. It all poured sweet and clear — it was a very good year. * * * * If the SS had one regret from ‘07, it was that we were never in the same city as Midlake. The Denton, Texas, fivesome awed us with the mellow explorations of The Trials of Van Occupanther, and we’re happy to report that they’re home, taking their sweet-ass time on the follow-up. “It will be called The Courage of Others,” reports singer Tim Smith. “I think it will sound darker — not dark like Sabbath, but a little more minor-key.” Whereas Van Occupanther was recorded in their living room (”That was tough, because of roommates”), Midlake now occupy their own studio in Denton, with families and dogs waiting at home. “We’ve been going in at 8 a.m. and we’re done by 5,” says Smith, whose songwriting has been influenced, most recently, by No Other, the mysterioso 1974 solo gem from Gene Clark of the The Byrds. “We were jammin’ pretty hard this morning,” Smith says. “We said to ourselves, ‘No other rock band does this at 9:30 i
