Meet the King of Stoner Rock Movies (Just in Time for 4/20!) By now most everybody (stoned or otherwise) knows that watching The Wizard of Oz while listening to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon unspools a motherload of eerie synchronicities. But did you know that the same thing happens when you combine Led Zeppelin IV and The Fellowship of the Ring? Or The Matrix and Metallica’s “Black Album”? Fellowship of the IV and The Black Matrix are just two of the 17 full-length DVDs that you can pick up at Syncmovies.com. Other bizarre mash-ups include The Ozzorcist (Black Sabbath meets The Exorcist) and Nevermind the Memento (Nirvana’s Nevermind with Memento). The man behind the site and creator of these artifacts of black magic goes by the name “The DeVille,” a 48-year-old Atlanta-area native who does not reveal his real name for legal reasons. A doctor of synchronicity, he employs what he calls “the rainbow connection” to find them, looking for themes between the music and the film and then testing his theories via countless hours of trial and error. He happened upon the concept in 1999 when his son Ray hipped him to the legend of The Dark Side of Oz. “It just made my hair stand up,” says The DeVille of the first time he watched it. Compelled by his discovery, The Deville quit his job in the collections department at the IRS and took a job at a video production company so he could hone what he was doing. Since then, The DeVille has devoted himself to making sync videos. His projects feature top-of-the line audio (some feature his own 5.1 surround sound mixes) and picture quality, and many come with subtitles featuring the movie’s original dialogue (as well as disclaimers urging his customers to support the studios and artists by buying the original movies and albums). Rock Daily decided to put some of these syncs to the test, and our results are below. Movie: Fellowship of the IV Combines: Led Zeppelin’s IV and Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: Th

"In the Future" by Black MountainBlack Mountain's 2005 debut won the hearts of critics, Coldplay and especially those indie kids with heavy metal leanings haunting their past. It's been a few years since that collection of Sabbath-laced, Crazy Horse-fueled stoner jams, and it seems that with some time off, they expanded their repertoire in a few notable ways. In the Future is whole-heartedly Black Mountain—heavy jams are contained within, and the 16-plus minute "Bright Lights" should surely satiate any fans' long-held wishes for the group to take their epic, more psychedelic stage show into the studio. The sprawling track easily forms the centerpiece of the album: The first four minutes greet listeners with utterances of the phrase "bright lights" in a creepy, warbled keyboard riff, before the band shifts into serious, heavy guitar jams for the remaining twelve minutes. But it's not all heavy tunes; Black Mountain dabbles a bit as well in the ballad area. "Stay Free" connects

"Gods of the Earth" by The SwordWhen Age Of Winter, The Sword’s debut, impacted the planet back in 2006, hipsters and headbanger’s alike were transfixed by the band’s channeling of Black Sabbath and use of vintage equipment to achieve a classic rawk sound. The Sword continues on that same beaten path on Gods Of The Earth, an excellent album with a burlier, surlier metallic vibe than that of its excellent predecessor. Massive Sabbathian riffs and fuzzed out distortion are the centerpiece of Gods Of The Earth. It’s all about riffin’ till ya can’t riff no more when it comes to this Austin-based, much buzzed about quartet. Vocalist J.D. Cronise delivers his lyrics in a style similar to a young ‘n virile Ozzy Osbourne, but this album starts and ends with its riffs. “Lords” will bulldoze over your without any mercy or consideration for your well being. “To Take The Black” and “Maiden, Mother, And Crone” conjure up images of pre-Leviathan Mastodon, while “Fire Lances The Ancient Hyperzephyrians” will rip your heart

Jimmy Page Testifies in Bootlegging Trial, Alice in Chains Announce Acoustic Gigs, Sebastian Bach Gets a New Deal Led Zeppelin/Yardbirds/Black Crowes guitarist Jimmy Page has a new gig … as a prosecution witness in a Scottish bootlegging trial being held this week. Page has been recruited to provide evidence against Robert Langley, a businessman accused of trying to sell over 2,400 pirated CDs and DVDs, many of which were of Led Zeppelin. Sharon Osbourne’s father Don Arden, who helped foster the careers of Black Sabbath, Small Faces and ELO, has passed away at the age of 81. Now that there are no more episodes of the Gilmore Girls to star in, Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach is spending his free time working on a new album and record label. Alice in Chains will play four acoustic-only shows during the off days of their upcoming tour with Velvet Revolver. Check out the trailer for Wes Anderson’s new film The Darjeeling Limited. It’s like Rushmore, but in India. Photo: Wilson/Getty

Black Sabbath Bring the Rock at Radio CityMinutes before the Ronnie James Dio-fronted iteration of Black Sabbath hit the stage at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Friday, an announcement came over the PA. “Tickets are on sale now for Dora The Explorer and Thomas The Tank Engine,” the friendly female voice boomed. It went on to say something about Harry Connick, Jr. but the crowd of aging metal-heads wasn’t having it — particularly the guy in front of me wearing the “It Isn’t Going To Suck Itself” t-shirt. “SAAAABAAAAATH!” came the pained yells. One forty-something fan held his cane high in the air, as if asking for Dio to heal him. His other hand was clenched into the Dio-patented devil sign: “DIIIIIOOOOO!” When the band finally burst onto the stage — which was decorated to look like an abandoned grave yard — and burst into the 1992 obscurity “After All (the Dead),” it was as if Ozzy-era Sabbath had never happened. Let’s get one thing out of the way: Black Sabbath made better albums with Ozzy Osbourne. They’ll never touch Master of Reality or Paranoid. That said, the Dio era is vastly underappreciated. Heaven and Hell was better than anything Sabbath had done since the early 1970s and Dio was an amazing front man who brought a completely different kind of energy to the band. Furthermore, as even Tony Iommi admitted on VH1 the other day, the Ozzy-era songs have been “played to death” since the group reformed ten years ago. How many times can you do the same eleven songs? This was a reunion whose time had come and (dare I say it?) was a better show than the last time I saw Sabbath with Ozzy. The set list was drawn entirely from the three Dio-helmed albums, plus a couple new songs from the forthcoming Dio Years compilation. The guy behind me was pissed they didn’t play “N.I.B. and shit,” but nobody else seemed to mind. Highlight included a frenzied “Die Young,” a show closing “Neon Knights” and an extra long version of their epic masterpiece “Heaven and Hell” – perhaps the greatest
