Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily• AC/DC revealed some Black Ice details by announcing the new album’s track list and release date. The Aussie rockers even hung out in the Smoking Section. Meanwhile, some fans’ interpretations of the first single “Rock N’ Roll Train” left us, well, thunderstruck. If you want blood bad performances, you’ve got it. • We inched closer to the release of Metallica’s Death Magnetic with a pair of song snippets, a pair of cheap European concert dates and the premiere of first single “The Day That Never Comes.” But can Death and a bunch of other big autumn albums help save the music industry? • The music world was saddened by the passing of Dave Matthews Band saxophonist LeRoi Moore. The band started a memorial fund in his honor, Blues Traveler’s John Popper and Crash producer Steve Lillywhite paid their respects, and we dedicated a Rock List to his music. • Nestled within our Bush-bashing new issue, Ra Ra Riot, Lykke Li and Low Vs Diamond were named among the up-and-coming acts in this year’s crop of Artists to Watch.

Former Grateful Dead Keyboardist Merl Saunders DiesPhoto: Blakesberg/Retna Keyboardist Merl Saunders, a longtime collaborator with the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band, died this morning at Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco after complications from a stroke. Saunders was 74. Saunders suffered a stroke six years ago and lost the use of one of his hands and his ability to speak, but remained active in Bay Area music circles. “Boy, did he get the most out of what he had left,” Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart told the Marin Independent Journal. Saunders grew up in San Francisco, playing the piano by ten and later graduated to the Hammond B-3 under the careful tutelage of the legendary Jimmy Smith. In 1970 began playing with Garcia in “Legion of Mary” and then “Garcia/Saunders,” producing a number of popular albums including the Deadhead favorite Live at the Keystone. Their 1990 collaboration, Blues from the Rainforest, hit the Billboard Top 10. Saunders also contributed to the Dead’s album Grateful Dead in 1971. Later, he became known as a senior member of the jam band scene having played with Phish, Blues Traveler and Widespread Panic, earning him the title “Godfather of Jam Bands.” Saunders also worked as a jazz trio player, performing and recording with Harry Belafonte, Frank Sinatra, Lionel Hampton, Miles Davis, B. B. King, Bonnie Raitt, and Paul Butterfield. “Despite having lost one side of his body to the stroke and being unable to speak, Merl lit up rooms with his smile and spirit” said longtime Grateful Dead publicist and band historian Dennis McNally. “And despite physical damage he put out more sweetness than anyone could imagine. He was a giant soul, and I will remember his smile, at the Greek Theatre tribute to Jerry Garcia a few years back as he played one handed with Melvin Seals. I’ll remember that smile forever.” Related Stories: • The Dead Rock the Pyramids • How the Dead Came to Life • The Immortals: The Grateful Dead

Blues Traveler’s John Popper, “Crash” Producer Steve Lillywhite Remember DMB’s LeRoi MoorePhoto: Swift/Retna John Popper of Blues Traveler and producer Steve Lillywhite both talked to Rolling Stone about the loss of their friend, Dave Matthews Band saxophonist LeRoi Moore. “He was a very sweet man,” said Popper. “He was always about the music. He was like a tough jazz musician. He was always more about how you play than how the crowd bought it. He was always talking music.” Popper first met Moore when DMB opened for Blues Traveler in 1991. “When he came to DMB, he brought a whole new foundation. As a sax player, there was a confidence when someone was using those scales and coming from his school. He was one of the best sax players I’ve ever heard,” Popper said. Steve Lillywhite, who produced DMB’s Under the Table and Dreaming, Crash and Before These Crowded Streets, said of LeRoi — which means “the king” in French — “He was very much the king of a lot of things he did. I have great memories of staying up late in the studio working on music collages with him.” Lillywhite adds, “He was a beautiful person. He had music — music was the number one thing for him.” As for his favorites of Moore’s contributions, Lillywhite remembers Moore’s work on the Under the Table and Dreaming cut “Lover Lay Down,” as well as Moore’s most “essential” performance, the “Bartender” found on the “Lillywhite Sessions” bootleg. “It’s a sad time for all of us, but he has a legacy that will always live.” Related Stories: • Dave Matthews Band Saxophonist LeRoi Moore Dead at 46 • Dave Matthews Band Saxophonist Seriously Injured in ATV Accident • Dave Matthews Band Start the Summer on a Groovy Note
