Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell Preview Projekt Revolution Linkin Park’s annual Projekt Revolution Tour kicks off tonight outside of Boston, so Rock Daily sat down with LP’s Chester Bennington and co-headliner Chris Cornell to talk about this summer’s jaunt. “What I like about doing a touring festival, especially Projekt Rev, is the fact these are bands that I can get really excited about since I’m part of the reason they’re there. For me to be able to bring out Mindless Self Indulgence — a band that I’ve always liked and I’ve felt that they’ve never really gotten the love that they deserve — to see them show up and play with another band like Saosin and 5,000 kids are showing up at noon, just like, ‘Yes, it’s happening.’” Click below for more on Projekt Revolution (which also features the Bravery, Busta Rhymes, Ashes Divide, Hawthorne Heights and Atreyu) and check back in tomorrow for Rock Daily’s full report on opening night. • Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell Preview Projekt Revolution [Photo: Getty]

Coldplay to Audition Opening Acts Via YouTube Contest Having already recruited Santogold for their Viva La Vida tour, Coldplay will now employ a YouTube contest that will allow unknown groups the opportunity to be an opening act for one of the biggest bands in the world. The contest is run in conjunction with radio stations in six markets: Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Hartford, Philadelphia and San Jose, CA. In each case, potential warm-up acts are asked to upload their videos onto YouTube, where a panel of judges comprised of radio station employees will watch all the clips and whittle the nominees down to fifteen. After that, fan voting reduces the finalists to three. Coldplay will watch the final trio and decide which band wins. The prize: 20 minutes of stage time as Coldplay’s opening act, $2,000 and ten tickets to the concert. To enter the contest, check out Coldplay’s tour page. [Photo: Getty]

News Ticker: Britney Spears, Chicago, Guided By Voices and Swizz Beatz L.A. prosecutors have decided it was the photographer and not Britney Spears who was to blame for the singer running over the victim’s foot late last year. The paparazzi member filed felony charges in May, which were dismissed. An album that the band Chicago recorded back in 1993, titled Stone of Sisyphus, will finally get a proper release. The band’s former record label shelved the album, but Rhino will resurrect the “lost” album today. Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard and the Decemberists‘ John Moen (formerly of Stephen Malkmus’ Jicks) have formed a new side project Boston Spaceships. The band’s first album, Brown Submarine, is due out September 9th. Producer Swizz Beatz claims that he’s working with Michael Jackson and that he’s in the process of producing the King of Pop’s tour. Pete Townshend Muses on Rock Honors, Smashing Computers, Eddie Vedder in E-Mail to Rolling StoneAfter taping VH1 Honors: The Who, Pete Townshend e-mailed Rolling Stone’s Jenny Eliscu with a post-mortem discussing his own performance, his desire to smash plastic Rock Band instruments and the advice he gave Eddie Vedder a few years ago. Here’s the message: Despite my smiley face, I was on guard on the red carpet and didn’t say much although the New York Times guy caught me off guard with the best question of my life, delivered almost dead-pan: “WHY DON’T YOU JUST DO WHAT ROGER WANTS?” For a split second I tried to answer. The show felt clunky to me because I find it hard to mix work and pleasure, and so much of it was about mixing with people and accepting their good wishes. I tend to shut myself away before and after shows, it’s about making the best of the very little I have left to give the audience. Trying to increase the force of the water by closing down the valve on the hose, so to speak. I thought Roger sounded good. He’s been keeping himself active, doing small shows, and it showed. It always takes me 20 minutes or so to loosen up. This was our first show for a year or so, so I was rusty on guitar. I felt like I was holding a spade (shovel). I dreamed last night of trying to play the show with a guitar actually covered in soil. I have been playing piano since last July, and only acoustic guitar (on the sofa while watching episodes of Medium or Boston Legal as my way of remembering America). Electric guitar and arm-swinging is not what I do between dog-walks and arthritis. You probably know that VH1 Rock Honors was originally floated as an idea to help sell Viacom’s Rock Band. My son and his buddies did play with Rock Band around Christmas, until I lent it to the much younger son of Rachel’s drummer. I never tried it. I thought I’d probably end up smashing it. I did have an idea for a stunt — if Viacom is VH1, and they own Rock Band, what about giving me a plastic guitar to smash on the show? Even better, what about giving me five hundred thousand plast
