Secrets of “The Runaways”: Joan Jett, Kristen Stewart and Co. on the Wild New BiopicPhoto: Wargo/WireImage What’s the only thing better than becoming the first acclaimed all-female rock band? Becoming the first all-female rock band to get your own biopic. At least that was the feeling during Wednesday night’s premiere of The Runaways, the true story of the five teenage girls who spent the Seventies kicking their way down the Sunset Strip and into the boys’ club. On the red carpet at New York’s Landmark Sunshine theater, the E Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt called the Runaways “

Kings of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs Wrap Austin City Limits Day OnePhoto: Miller/FilmMagicThere was a large eyeball suspended at the rear of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs‘ stage setup Friday night, a fitting prop for a band that prides itself on spectacle. The band’s Austin City Limits show was the second for which they stepped in as a replacement for the ailing Beastie Boys (the first was Lollapalooza), and if some of their typical razor sharpness had been blunted from all the subbing, that just meant that they were merely the fourth best live band around. The band will perform from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the Xbox 360 stage, just before Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kings of Leon’s dueling headlining sets. Brand New Does the Soft-Loud Thing At Gramercy TheaterLong Island emo outfit Brand New delivered an excellent conclusion to their run of hometown gigs with last night’s performance at New York’s Gramercy Theater. The show was the last in a string of four shows the band played at small clubs around the city, and were a far cry from the group’s appearance at the mammoth Bamboozle festival earlier this month, where they played before a literal cast of thousands. And so ended the emo boys’ North American tour. The band’s l

Um, do YOU like the look of Nigel Martin-Smith’s new boy band?We are grateful for the existence of Nigel Martin-Smith, because without the slightly scary pop svengali, Take That would never have existed and we wouldn’t have rude dreams every night about licking Jason Orange’s chest. However, we’re not 100 per cent convinced about his latest venture. The picture you are looking at with your eyes is of Nigel’s new boy band As Bro. Yes, As Bro. He’s manufactured the Mancunian boys in his factory of pop and they’re about to be launched into the big wide world.

Tool Announce Plans to Hit the Road Summer 2009Photo: Grimwade/WireImage Last year was a quiet one for Tool, with frontman Maynard James Keenan concentrating on Puscifer and not much activity to follow up Tool’s 2006 album 10,000 Days. But the band’s vacation will end soon, as the Tool Website has revealed plans for a summer tour. No dates have been confirmed as yet, but “once they are finalized and official, we’ll be sure to announce them on the site,” the band writes. According to a press release announcing the performers at Denver’s Mile High Festival on July 18th and 19th, Tool are confirmed headliners. The announcement of the summer trek comes as a minor surprise, as Tool tour rumors have been buzzing about the Internet. Tool was last week mentioned by the Chicago Tribune as one of the bands possibly headlining this year’s Lollapalooza festival, so the fact that the band revealed plans to tour this summer lends credence to that theory. Plus, Tool took part in the 1993 and 1997 mobile Lollapaloozas, and with rumored headliners like Jane’s Addiction, the Killers, Beastie Boys and Kings of Leon all having previously played the fest through the years, Tool’s addition makes sense. The band’s last tour was an 18-month world-spanning jaunt that kicked off at April 2006’s Coachella Festival and wrapped up December 14th, 2007 in Las Vegas. In between, the quartet headlined a night at the 2007 Bonnaroo. If you really can’t wait until this summer to see Tool, there’s some good news: Keenan will be hosting a wine signing at the Whole Foods Market today, March 26th in Houston, Texas and tomorrow at a Whole Foods in San Antonio. The Tool site promises that the tour dates will be “posted soon,” so check back with Rock Daily soon for all the details. L.A. Guns, Guess Who, Beach Boys Members Battle With Competing LineupsPhoto: Natkin/WireImage One night last summer, L.A. Guns took the stage at the Taste of Lombard food festival in Lombard, Illinois. At the same time, 1,200 miles away, L.A. Guns hit the stage at the Muscle Party Rockfest in Sarasota, Florida. How was this possible? Because L.A. Guns, like a growing number of acts, are touring in two competing lineups: one fronted by the group’s original guitarist, Tracii Guns, and another led by his Eighties bandmates, singer Phil Lewis and drummer Steve Riley. “Tracii’s L.A. Guns is bogus,” says Riley. “People want to hear the songs sung by the original lead singer.” Guns counters, “Those guys are a couple of dirty motherfuckers. I hired them for my band — if you get hired as a manager at McDonald’s, you don’t take over the McDonald’s.” Two versions of the Guess Who, War, Jefferson Airplane, the Temptations and the Beach Boys are all battling for bookings next summer. Band members are crying foul, lawsuits are flying, fans are confused, and promoters are tempeted to give out shows to the lowest bidder. “This has proved beyond Spinal Tap ridiculous,” says original L.A. Guns guiitarist Tracii Guns. “The next chapter would be us trying to book a convenience store and battling over the $300 they’d pay us.” To read more about how bands are dealing with their doppelgängers, check out Andy Greene’s story from issue 1072 below: • The Battle of the B-List Bands
