Monsters of Folk Show Off Killer Chops at Marathon Gig in L.A.Photograph by Autumn De Wilde Monsters of Folk played a monster-sized set last night at L.A.’s Greek Theatre, running through 35 songs in just under three hours — with no opener and no intermission — in support of the indie-rock supergroup’s self-titled debut, which came out about a month ago. The Monsters comprise My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James; singer-songwriter (and She & Him guy) M. Ward; and Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis, both of Bright Eyes, and at the Greek the band’s set alternated

New Reviews: Conor Oberst, St. Vincent, New York Dolls and MoreLeading the charge of new releases this week is Conor Oberst, who once again drops his Bright Eyes moniker for his second album in two years, Outer South. Backed by the Mystic Valley Band, Outer South finds Oberst sharing songwriting duties for the first time in his prolific career, resulting in an album that’s more freewheeling and adventurous than its folk-rock predecessor. Among the highlights on Outer South, which earned a three-and-a-half star review in Rolling Stone, is the Eagles-esque “S

Bright Eyes Sells Lots of Albums, New “Shrek” Tunes Likely to Amuse and More Nevermind the fact that this last week was a very slow one in terms of album sales, it’s still cool that Bright Eyes scored a super high Number Four debut on the charts, moving 58,354 copies of the band’s new album Cassadaga. Congrats Conor! Some potential jurors in the Phil Spector murder trial are admitting that they have preconceived prejudice against the producer. “Honestly, I think he did it,” one woman said during jury selection. “I think I’m a fair pe

News Ticker: Richie Sambora, Bright Eyes, AC/DC, Fergie Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora was officially charged with two counts of DUI stemming from a March 25 arrest. Sambora avoided a child endangerment charge, as his ten-year-old daughter was in the car when he was pulled over. Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst will release a new album under his own name on August 5th. Conor Oberst will be the Rolling Stone’s Best Songwriter’s first collection of songs released under his own name since 1996. AC/DC have completed recording their new, Brendan O’Brien-produced CD in Vancouver and are now in the mixing and artwork stages, says singer Brian Johnson. The band hopes to unleash the new record later this year. The reissue of Fergie’s The Duchess will feature a track (and video) with Nelly called “Party People,” as well as the theme from the upcoming Sex and the City movie “Labels or Love.” [Photo: Getty]

Hot Issue Hits and Misses: Nas and Cory Branan Rolling Stone’s 2008 Hot Issue spotlights acts like Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend (more on that here). All week, we’ve been taking a look at Hot Issue hits and misses from the past twenty-one years (because nobody’s cultural thermometer is accurate all the time). Hit: “A savior,” we called him. “The hip-hop Proust.” Whatever insane expectations we placed on Nas, the Hot Rapper of 1994, he’s lived up to them. He’s since feuded with Jay-Z and somehow survived, he married the girl who’s milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (Kelis), and he’s one of the few rappers who has credibility enough to claim Hip Hop Is Dead. Unfortunately, Nas’ hotness didn’t rub off on his 1994 Hot List page 64 neighbor, Hot Athlete/Baltimore Orioles Jeffrey Hammonds, who finished his disappointing baseball career in 2005 after playing for six teams over the course of twelve years. Miss: In his 2002 Hot Singer-Songwriter write-up, we (and his Wikipedia page) had the audacity to mention Cory Branan in the same sentence as peers Ryan Adams and Bright Eyes. Branan’s The Hell You Say lead to appearances on David Letterman, Carson Daly and our Hot List, but it would be another four years before Branan’s sophomore album 12 Songs was released to little fanfare. Branan also probably wins the award for Hot Lister with the smallest MySpace following (7,458 fans as of right now). Bright Eyes: Recapping Conor Oberst’s Wild Seven Nights At New York’s Town Hall Photo Credit: looserecords.com Last week Bright Eyes played seven shows in a row at New York’s famed Town Hall. The performances were billed as guest-star studded spectacles — music’s favorite prodigy all grown up and onstage with a huge band and a slew of bold names – and they didn’t disappoint. During the first show (Saturday, May 26th) Lou Reed showed up. Conor and the other twelve or so people currently playing in his band (including the inimitable former drummer from Sleater-Kinney Janet Weiss) were dressed like excitable brides in various shades of white. Reed wore black and joined the band for two songs, “Waiting For My Man” and “Dirty Blvd.” Over the course of the following six nights Oberst was joined onstage by a slew of other guests including Ben Kweller, Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis and her boyfriend, singer/actor Jonathan Rice, Norah Jones and her band The Little Willies, Nick Zinner and Ben Gibbard, Ron Sexsmith and Britt Daniel. All this starpower came in addition to Conor’s opening act, the extremely impressive Gillian Welch and her man David Rawlings, and Oberst’s girlfriend and fellow Saddle Creek affiliate Maria Taylor, all of whom joined Bright Eyes onstage to lend their particular talent (haunting old school bluegrass vocals if you’re Gillian Welch, tambourine playing if you’re Maria Taylor) to various songs. Though there are a couple of noteworthy bands on Saddle Creek - the Omaha-based label Oberst helped found – its his music that defines the label, and the scene that gave birth to it. At twenty-seven, the guy is clearly tired of shouldering that burden alone and is trying to get away from images of himself as prophet/troubadour, even though that’s exactly what he is. Oberst has made longtime Bright Eyes collaborators Nate Wolcott and Mike Mogis official members of the band, and he’s gotten busy surrounding himself with other super-talented people likely to
