SXSW 2010 Day Three Twitter Marathon: 24 Reports, From Liars to Local NativesThe big story on SXSW’s third day was the surprise Muse performance at Stubb’s, which was announced during the broadcast of the Fox show Human Target earlier in the week (yes, really) — though Rolling Stone’s own showcase featuring Band of Skulls, Jimmie Dale and Colin Gilmore, Court Yard Hounds, John Doe, Rye Rye and Nneka was a pretty hot ticket, too. Christopher R. Weingarten of @1000TimesYes continued his Twitter odyssey yesterday, tweeting about 24 bands in 14 hours for @RollingStone. Reli

Readers’ Rock List: Super Bowl Halftime PerformersPhoto: Kravitz/FilmMagic Last week, following Bruce Springsteen’s Super Bowl halftime performance, Rock Daily asked our readers who should take the stage during halftime of the Big Game in 2010. After more than 400 responses, the readers agreed that it was about time the Who got their due. Considering the game will be broadcast on CBS, home of those CSI shows that feature the Who as theme music, the pick makes perfect sense. Other acts making the list include the possible (Van Halen) to the impossible (Led Zeppelin) to the awesomely impossible (Guns n’ Roses.) Check out the full readers’ list below: 1. The Who 2. Pearl Jam 3. Guns n’ Roses 4. Van Halen 5. Dave Matthews Band 6. Foo Fighters 7. Red Hot Chili Peppers 8. AC/DC 9. Neil Young 10. Led Zeppelin 11. Radiohead 12. R.E.M. 13. Eagles 14. The Killers 15. Backstage at Mountain Jam: What the Bands Were WatchingPhoto: Dino Perucci Last weekend, rock fans flocked to upstate New York’s Hunter Mountain for the annual Mountain Jam (check out our full report here), and while legends were noodling in nature, Woodstock-based WDST — which staged the fest with Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes — welcomed performers to their broadcast booth in the mountain’s ski lodge. After playing Sunday with his band BK3, Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann hit the booth and praised the working chair lifts

The Decemberists Premiere Perfectly Over-the-Top “The Hazards of Love” at SXSWThree weeks before the Decemberists premiered their new album, The Hazards of Love, at SXSW, the band’s singer-songwriter Colin Meloy told me that they had not rehearsed the record in its entirety yet. In that interview, Meloy also marveled on how the Who used to perform all of their rock opera, Tommy, with just guitar, bass, vocals and drums. At Stubb’s last night, the Decemberists came armed to the teeth for their album’s live premiere, broadcast nationwide by NPR. Guitarist Chris Funk had a full armory of strings, including pedal steel guitar and bouzouki. There were helpmates: singer-instrumentalists Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond and Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond. And there were five drum kits ready for banging in the percussion-and-chant orgy “The Bake Song” — a number which sounded especially big and right in the open-air venue. (See live shots of the Decemberists and more in our SXSW gallery.) Originally conceived by Meloy as a Broadway musical, The Hazards of Love is the consummation of his recent obsession with the antique melodies, arcane language and rock energy of the British folk revival of the 1960s and ’70s. Stark channeled Steeleye Span’s Maddy Prior in the Yorkshire-country waltz “Isn’t It a Lovely Night,” a duet with Meloy. But Meloy has also discovered and let loose his inner progressive-metal head. The medley of “The Waiting Comes in Waves” and “Repaid” was an extended bomb of Jenny Conlee’s foreboding Renaissance harpsichord, the fourth Led Zeppelin album and, in Worden’s lusty vocal, psychedelic-R&B vengeance. Actually, in playing the whole album like a flesh-and-blood jukebox — with none of the charming budget theatricals of their Picaresque shows — the Decemberists sold the commercial savvy in Meloy’s songs like a classic rock band. In the ’70s, the Deep Purple-style muscle of “The Queen’s Rebuke/The Crossing” and the arena-climax vocal chorus in “The Waiting Comes in Waves” would have been FM-radio gold. Instead, 30 years later, th

Wayne Coyne: “The Who’s Music Is Really Optimistic” Wayne Coyne’s life was changed back in Oklahoma City in the 1970s, when he attended his first Who concert as a teenager. The Flaming Lips leader can still talk excitedly about that night with his brothers, hearing the music erupt onstage, watching the band explode, worrying if the green lasers just might cut off his fingers. By 1986, Coyne and the Flaming Lips were performing a raw medley of songs from Tommy. And as part of Saturday’s VH1 Honors tribute concert to the Who at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, the Lips will perform a typically mind-altering take on songs from the Who’s most famous rock opera. Coyne plans to emerge in his epic “space bubble” and begin the Lips’ set with the immortal words: “See me, feel me, touch me, heal me…” The show, to be broadcast on VH1 on Thursday, July 17, will also include performances by the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Incubus and Tenacious D (who will play “Squeeze Box”). But this won’t be the first encounter between the Who and the Flaming Lips. In recent years, Coyne and the Lips have occasionally stepped onstage with Pete Townshend at his series of intimate “In the Attic” club shows, performing Who songs and originals with the classic rock icon. “Their music is really optimistic,” says Coyne. “There is a sense that they believe what they’re saying. When the music is going with it, we all believe it together. And that’s a cool thing.” Did you get to choose what Who songs you would be doing? Luckily, they wanted us to do a Tommy medley. We’re like, “Fuck, yeah!” We had done this Tommy medley in 1986. When we think of the Who doing those songs in the Live At Leeds era — doing the most intense freak-out shit — that was the period we like the most. We probably would have done anything they asked us, just because it’s cool to do and to meet Pete Townshend is great.

Metallica Stir Up a Mosh Pit at “Death Magnetic” Show for BBCFresh off a launch party/concert for Death Magnetic in Berlin, Metallica checked into London’s BBC Theatre last night to record a one-hour live radio broadcast that saw the band test five new tracks and rifle through a handful of old favorites. “Do you like?” Metallica frontman James Hetfield asked of 300-plus fan club members after the band ripped through “That Was Just Your Life” and “End of the Line,” two cuts from the new album. The Metallica faithful were well acquainted with Death Magnetic and obliged Hetfield when asked to “Sing along, if you know the words” on the first two singles “Cyanide” and “The Day That Never Comes.” After 45 minutes of nonstop speed metal, Metallica produced a thundering conclusion (and perhaps the first-ever mosh pit at the BBC) with classics “Master of Puppets” and “Blackened.” Metallica stuck around for a few moments after the show as Hetfield high-fived fans while Lars Ulrich tossed drumsticks into the crowd. For those in the U.K., the concert will be broadcast tonight on Radio One at 9:00 PM GMT. Following the radio broadcast, the full gig will be available for streaming on the BBC’s Website. Metallica play in London again tonight at the O2 Arena and will kick off their 35-date North American tour on October 21st in Glendale, Arizona. Set List: “That Was Just Your Life” “End of the Line” “Until it Sleeps” “Broken Beat Scarred” “Cyanide” “Frantic” “For Whom the Bell Tolls” “The Day That Never Comes” “Master of Puppets” “Blackened” Related Stories: • Metallica Expected to Sell 500K Copies of Death Magnetic Despite Short Sales Week • Album Review: Metallica, Death Magnetic (4 stars) • Metallica Premiere Video For “The Day That Never Comes” • More Metallica News at Rock & Roll Daily

Radiohead Team Up With Al Gore for NYE Webcast, Fall Out Boy Talk Maysles Documentary, John Mayer Muses on “Douchebags” and More Tired of the usual Dick Clark New Year’s Eve fare? On December 31st at midnight, ring in 2008 with Radiohead and Al Gore. To mark the New Year’s Day release of the In Rainbows CD, Gore’s Current TV will broadcast a pre-recorded yet still-unseen performance of Radiohead playing their new album in its entirety, as well as some surprises (including a hinted-at Siouxsie and the Banshees cover). Like the band’s “thumbs down” webcast, the New Year’s performance can also be seen at Radiohead.tv at 7 pm EST, or midnight U.K. time. Following the shocking revelation that Gimme Shelter and Grey Gardens documentarian Albert Maysles was working on a Fall Out Boy film, Pete Wentz says the doc will examine “how the industry is changing” by focusing on Wentz’s Decaydance Records. The film will also document a year in the life of Fall Out Boy. According to the Ouija Board video on his Web site, Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds have a new album, titled Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, coming out on March 3rd. Still searching for that amazing post-Christmas gift? Ghostface Killah recommends, or rather demands, you pick up your very own Ghostface Doll. Call 213-455-1493 from a “pay phone, cell phone or a jail phone.” Operators are standing by. Check out John Mayer’s blog-sized analysis of the most popular word of 2007: “Douchebag.”

AT&T Vows No Censorship During Webcasts of Austin City Limits; Plus Full ACL Broadcast Schedule After enduring serious flak for cutting out pieces of Pearl Jam’s Lollapalooza performance — the pieces during which the band criticized President Bush — on AT&T’s Blue Room Webcast, the company has decided to loosen up, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. “AT&T’s Blue Room has adopted a new policy with respect to live Webcasted performances, and that is that we’re not going to do any audio editing for any reason,” said AT&T spokeswoman Tiffany O’Brien Nels. “We’re letting it rip, as the saying goes. We do reserve the right to edit the video feed, but we will only do that either through camera angles or video blackouts for excessive sexual content — nudity or simulated sex acts. Because the site is not eighteen and over and we do believe we still have some obligation to the younger audience, you will now see strong viewer discretion messaging before and during the Webcast.” Yesterday the company issued a press release announcing they’ll be Webcasting from the Austin City Limits festival today through Sunday. We got our hands on their full Blue Room schedule, which includes MIA, Arctic Monkeys, Paolo Nutini, Joss Stone, Spoon, Regina Spektor and Bloc Party. Check out the full Webcast lineup after the jump. And stay tuned to Rock Daily for full ACL fest coverage, including video, photos and a wrap-up report. Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars: Q&ASierra Leone was entrenched in a brutal civil war for much of the '90s and into the early '00s. So as bling was coined and celebrated, blood was let in one of the most diamond-rich countries of the world. Q-Tip memorably pulled Kanye West's couture coattail to the conflict in 2005 resulting in the titular reference on Late Registration's lead single "Diamonds from Sierra Leone," but the same year three filmmakers' documentary chronicle of the travails of some resilient and unimaginably industrious refugee musicians captured the film festival circuit. This film, Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars, found musician Reuben Koroma and makeshift band tending to his fellow refugees psychic well being through music. With the help of the filmmakers the All-Stars even recorded an album, Living Like a Refugee (2006), in the civil war's wake. The documentary and album has touched a nerve in the west and the All-Stars have toured steadily to broadcast their message of peace and afro-reggae musicianship.
