Remembering Jam Master Jay on His 45th BirthdayPhoto: Micelotta/Getty Had he not been murdered in a Queens, New York recording studio in October 2002, Jam Master Jay would have been 45 today. 50 Cent Doles Out Business Advice on “The Money and the Power”In these troubling economic times, 50 Cent has some words of advice: “Turn Shit Into Sugar.” That slogan is spray-painted on the wall at “Camp Curtis,” the Brooklyn warehouse where the rapper is filming The Money and the Power, his new MTV show debuting on November 6th. (Another motivational nugget: “Use Your Cents to Make Change”). The program — which 50 hosts, alongside G-Unit consigliere Tony Yayo — features 14 aspiring entrepreneurs who compete in challenges that mix business savvy, street smarts and even physical strength. One episode finds the contestants bound together, chain-gang style, as they run a race. Each show ends with someone getting kicked off, but don’t confuse it with The Apprentice: “Nobody gets fired on this one,” says 50. “You get dropped.” And not gently. “You have one more chance,” the rapper tells one competitor during an elimination. “In Hell. Get the fuck outta here!” 50 — who pulled in $150 million last year to become the world’s richest rapper — will invest $100,000 in the winner’s business plan. So what does he think about his crop of wannabe execs? “They’re adapting to the environment and looking for opportunities to turn bad things into good things,” he says. “They’re becoming something more than when they came in.” Related Stories: • 50 Cent to Play TRL Finale • Trailer: 50 Cent’s Before I Self-Destruct • Cover Story: 50 Cent, Hunted Man

Arcade Fire and John Mayer Join “Austin City Limits” Lineup, Jay-Z Hopes to Christen “Rocawear Arena,” Justin Timberlake Admits VMAs Hangover PBS music showcase Austin City Limits, now in its 33rd season, will kick off on October 6th with a performance by Norah Jones. Also appearing during this season’s seventeen-week run are John Mayer, Bloc Party, and Crowded House. We’ve already set our TiVos for the 11/3 (Wilco) and 11/10 (Arcade Fire) episodes. Patrick Watson’s Close to Paradise surprisingly beat out the likes of Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible and Feist’s The Reminder to win this year’s Polaris Prize, which is given to the best Canadian album. Other Canucks defeated by Watson include the Dears, Junior Boys, and the Besnard Lakes. Jay-Z hopes to rename the Continental Airlines Arena, home of his co-owned New Jersey Nets, “Rocawear Arena” for the next two seasons. Rival clothing companies Izod and Southpole are also in the mix for naming rights to the arena, which will see the Devils move to Newark this season and the Nets bounce over to Brooklyn in 2009. After canceling two North California concerts earlier this month due to “vocal strain,” Justin Timberlake admitted to the crowd at a rescheduled San Jose show that he in fact “was hungover” after partying too hard at the VMAs. Up to $7 million is reportedly missing from James Brown’s estate, which may be the result of mismanagement by a former trustee. At risk: funds for Brown’s “I Feel Good” trust, which goes to help needy children in Georgia and South Carolina.
