Arcade Fire and John Mayer Join “Austin City Limits” Lineup, Jay-Z Hopes to Christen “Rocawear Arena,” Justin Timberlake Admits VMAs Hangover PBS music showcase Austin City Limits, now in its 33rd season, will kick off on October 6th with a performance by Norah Jones. Also appearing during this season’s seventeen-week run are John Mayer, Bloc Party, and Crowded House. We’ve already set our TiVos for the 11/3 (Wilco) and 11/10 (Arcade Fire) episodes. Patrick Watson’s Close to Paradise surprisingly beat out the likes of Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible and Feist’s The Reminder to win this year’s Polaris Prize, which is given to the best Canadian album. Other Canucks defeated by Watson include the Dears, Junior Boys, and the Besnard Lakes. Jay-Z hopes to rename the Continental Airlines Arena, home of his co-owned New Jersey Nets, “Rocawear Arena” for the next two seasons. Rival clothing companies Izod and Southpole are also in the mix for naming rights to the arena, which will see the Devils move to Newark this season and the Nets bounce over to Brooklyn in 2009. After canceling two North California concerts earlier this month due to “vocal strain,” Justin Timberlake admitted to the crowd at a rescheduled San Jose show that he in fact “was hungover” after partying too hard at the VMAs. Up to $7 million is reportedly missing from James Brown’s estate, which may be the result of mismanagement by a former trustee. At risk: funds for Brown’s “I Feel Good” trust, which goes to help needy children in Georgia and South Carolina.

Springsteen Toasts . . . Himself (with Help from Patti Smith, the Hold Steady and more)Towards the end of last night’s Bruce Springsteen tribute concert at Carnegie Hall, seventy-seven year old folk legend Odetta was wheeled onstage, only to launch into Bruce Springsteen’s single worst song ever: “57 Channels and Nothing On.” Accompanied only by a piano player she delivered a rendition that was part spoken word and part Woody Guthrie talking blues. It was hypnotic. Immediately afterwards Brooklyn indie rockers The Hold Steady took the stage and played the most joyous version of “Atlantic City” I’ve ever seen. Dancing around like Talking Heads-era David Byrne on speed, frontman Craig Finn delivered the sorrowful tale of a desperate man like it was “Joy To The World.” If not for the show’s finale, it would have been the greatest performance of the night. The show — a benefit concert for the children’s charity Music For Youth — began with Steve Earle’s stark solo acoustic take on the title track from Nebraska. Soon after, last-minute addition Patti Smith (who replaced Jewel on the evening’s all-star bill) sang a stripped-down “Because The Night” accompanied only by a pianist. “This song has followed me through my days,” an emotional Smith said of the tune she co-wrote with Bruce in 1978. “At times it’s even rescued me.” Other highlights included the Elysian Field’s slowed down, sensual version of “Streets of Fire,” Marah’s amped up take on “The Rising” and Badly Drawn Boy aka Damon Gough’s ebullient run-through of “Thunder Road.” The Jersey Guys (an elderly vocal group featuring Frankie Valli’s brother Bobby) did a doo-wop “Jersey Girl.” It was unclear whether or not they realized it was actually a Tom Waits song. After the Hold Steady finished, there was an odd moment of stillness on the stage. And then the evening’s announcer said, “What if I were a genie in the bottle and could grant you one wish?” Everybody the hall jumped to their feet and yelled “BRUUUUUCE,” as the man of the evening (unbilled but widely rumored to app

Coachella Day Three: Trailers, Beer and Gaydar For this year’s Coachella, we’ve dispatched our very own indie rock star reporter, Ed Droste of Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear. April 29th 2:04pm: Having a trailer makes life much easier. I can leave things there, there is booze. We are right next to the Klaxons trailer and CSS which is nice since they are the bands I’ve been hanging out with the most. Lots of British bands with tude around today. Kaiser Chiefs, The Kooks, The Feeling. Everyone has such outfits. As I said earlier today “I’m letting myself go” with my cut off jean shorts and a white t-shirts. I think people think I’m working here. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone came up and asked me to go get them more beer. Hah. Anyhoo — things are running so smoothly. Mika played while I ate lunch. He’s definitely gay. Still having a great time though and everyone I’ve actually met has been incredibly friendly. The cute boys from Boston who decorated the trailers made us amazing stuff for the room. A little toy piano with our name painted on it, a great papier-mache Mexican boxer dude hanging from the ceiling. Our sound guy (who’s seen it all with TV on the Radio) said this is one of the best festivals there is. Well organized, friendly people. Chill. I must agree. Resounding thumbs up. Gonna head over to our stage real soon. The temperature today is much more bearable today as well. A nice last day to an amazing festival. 5:09 p.m. Just got back from our set. It was really fun/funny. I had a total vocal crack in the bridge of “Knife” where I sounded like a teenager going through puberty. Oh well too much Coachella in my system! My own fault I suppose, haha. Crowd was super nice and I was shocked how many people came out to such an early show. Going to see CSS soon, can’t wait! 10:49 p.m. It feels so incredibly late. Tonight was so much fun. I got to see a lot of people I wanted to if ever so briefly. Have been overwhelmed b
