Nikki Sixx: “Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers Are Not Rock & Roll”

While praising Crüe Fest tourmates Papa Roach and Buckcherry for living up to the name in both music and personality, Sixx took some shots at a pair of recent chart-toppers. “There’s things that I see where I go, ‘Rock Star energy drink? Give a fucking break,’” Sixx says. “There’s no rock stars involved in this. There’s a lot of shit out there where people are calling it ‘rock.’ I went into Barnes & Noble the other day, and there’s a huge display that says ‘rock & roll,’ and it had a big thing of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. I went, ‘What the fuck is this?’ People are believing that shit that is not rock & roll, is not the rock lifestyle, is rock.” While the image of Nikki Sixx in a Barnes & Noble settles in, take heart that the Crüe will be back in American arenas for a three-month tour starting in January — a month after Sixx turns 50. In the meantime, Sixx is helping commemorate National Recovery Month by offering up his Sixx:AM song “Tomorrow” from The Heroin Diaries Soundtrack as an unofficial anthem, as the track’s lyrics offer an inspiring tale of getting accountable and finding stability in recovery. Reality Show Recap: ‘The Rock Life’ Debuts With Slash and Ass-Crack Aplenty

Every week The Rock Life follows Los Angeles band Whitestarr as they attempt to make it in the music biz. But who’s following The Rock Life? We are! Here’s our first report: Here’s Whitestarr lead singer Cisco Adler opening VH1’s umpteenth new reality show: “We’re just an average, struggling rock band that’s trying to make it.” However, the unspoken undercurrent from the get-go is that Whitestarr are just an average, struggling rock band whose lead singer is the spawn of the guy who produced Sam Cooke records, lives in palatial Malibu digs, drives a shiny red Caddy and is currently dating Marissa Cooper on The O.C. (clearly this was filmed a while back). Shelved by Atlantic a few years back, they’re looking for a second chance, armed with little more than a Black Crowes shimmy, a Buckcherry ’tude, a stunning amount of self-absorption and pants that don’t always fit right — forget the music, last night’s back-to-back premiere episodes featured no less than sixteen different shots of ass-crack! VH1 debuted two episodes in a row, probably since the expository first episode didn’t have much for actual conflict — be-fro’d guitarist Rainbow tried to convince his girlfriend to stay home from the sold-out Roxy show (“What if I was a lawyer and you came to my job with me?”) and then hot-dogged a guitar solo because Slash (sans sunglasses … yikes) was in the audience. And full-time dancer Tony Potato was concerned over the footing on his dancing platform at the Roxy. But the second episode was classic millennial Monkees antics. Their new manager advises them to “write the hit,” so they all move into Adler’s fancy digs to compose their ticket out of obscurity. And — surprise! — it’s not that simple as they thought! When the manager comes to check on their progress, Adler is frustrated that his band is so drunk and underrehearsed that everything devolves into tuneless flubs and bickering. Dir en grey, You Me At Six join Download 20009 bill!

You Me At Six, Dir en grey, Five Finger Death Punch and Meshuggah are among the latest wave of artists to be added to this year's ever-growing Download Festival line-up. "It's amazing that we've been asked to play Download 2009!" You Me At Six vocalist Josh Franceschi tells Kerrang!. "We love playing festivals and though none of us been to Download before, we know that it's pretty metal! I think if bands like Madina Lake can play Download in the past and not get murdered, then we should be okay! I am sure we'll all walk away with a bottle imprinted on our foreheads, but we're all for the weekend's festivities! We really wanna see Architects, Limp Bizkit and Slipknot." Kerrang! Tour 2009 stars Dir en grey are excited to return to the UK for the festival. "I think everyone in the UK is great and really friendly," says guitarist Kaoru. Down, Lacuna Coil and Papa Roach have been added to the bill of this year's K!-sponsored Download festival. Lacuna Coil are set to release their new album Shallow Life on April 20 and vocalist Cristina Scabbia tells K! that the band are itching to showcase their new material at this year's festival. "We are absolutely thrilled to be coming back to Download this year," says Scabbia. "I've played there twice, once with Lacuna Coil and last year with my friends from Apocalyptica. There's always such an amazing atmosphere there and we have a total blast when we're in the UK. And the third Download headliner is...

K! Dot Com can exclusively reveal that the third headliner for this year's Kerrang!-sponsored Download festival is... Faith No More! The highly-influential Californian quintet originally split in 1998, following their world tour for 1997's Album Of The Year. But last November Kerrang! exclusively revealed that the band were set to re-group this year, and the five-piece confirmed the news in a statement issued on February 25. The band, featuring vocalist Mike Patton, bassist Bill Gould, drummer Mike Bordin, keyboardist Roddy Bottum and guitarist Jon Hudson, will regroup for a headline slot at Download and additional European shows. "Faith No More has always stood out as some sort of unique beast; part dog, part cat - its music almost as schizophrenic as the personalities of its members," reads Faith No More's official statement. "When it all worked, it worked really well, even if the chemistry was always volatile. Throughout our 17 years of existence, the mental and physical energy required to sustain this creature was considerable and relentless. Though amicable enough, when we finally split, we all followed paths seemingly destined to opposite ends of the universe. What's changed is that this year, for the first time, we've all decided to sit down together and talk about it. And what we've discovered is that time has afforded us enough distance to look back on our years together through a clearer lens and made us realise that through all the hard work, the music still sounds good, and we are beginning to appreciate the fact that we might have actually done something right."
