Incubus, The National, Silversun Pickups Launch Outside LandsPhoto: Kravitz/FilmMagicThe first-day festivities at San Francisco’s massive Outside Lands Festival in Golden Gate Park offered a model mega-fest environment. A ballet of buses, bikes and walkers kept transportation flowing as smoothly as the free water, and the abundant, cheap food and booze. Thirty-six bands on seven stages drew at least 25,000 throughout the day and the weather proved pitch-perfect. Outside Lands in photos: Pearl Jam, Incubus, Built to Spill and more. Best Rock Tell-Alls: When Rockers Spill the Beans We’re sure some Jennifer Lopez obsessives are bummed out by the news that the singer-slash-actress’ first husband, Ojani Noa, is now legally barred from publishing his J.Lo tell-all book. But instead of mourning all the juicy details we’ll never know about the Fly Girl’s alleged late-’90s affairs, let’s focus on all the revealing rock books already out there. Here are a few of our favorites (feel free to contribute your own): Faithfull by Marianne Faithfull — For years rumors persisted that during the infamous Redlands drug bust at Keith Richards’ home in Sussex, police found Mick Jagger, Faithfull, and a Mars bar involved in an orgy. Faithfull dispelled this rumor in her autobiography: “Mick retrieving a Mars Bar from my vagina, indeed! It’s a dirty old man’s fantasy. A cop’s idea of what people do on acid!” Cash by Johnny Cash — Cash’s autobiography is noteworthy not because it reveals scandalous details about his life; his substance-abuse issues and relationship with June Carter were already well-known. It’s the intimacy with which Cash writes about the major, already-famous events of his life that makes Cash a truly engaging tell-all. The Dirt by Mötley Crüe and Neil Strauss — The bible of rock books reveals many salacious, obscene and even weirdly sweet truths about the Sunset Strip’s most debauched rockers, but our favorite is Nikki Sixx’s description of the famous Ozzy ant-snorting incident. “I handed [Ozzy] the straw and he walked over to a crack in the sidewalk and bent over it. I saw a long column of ants, marching to a little sand dugout built where the pavement met the dirt. And as I thought, ‘No, he wouldn’t,’ he did. He put the straw to his nose and, with his bare white ass peeking out from under the dress like a sliced honeydew, sent the entire line of ants tickling up his nose with a single, monstrous snort.”

Live Video: Built to Spill’s “I Would Hurt A Fly” at All Tomorrow’s PartiesOne of the centerpieces of the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival was the “Don’t Look Back” series, which featured several bands playing one of their classic albums in its entirety. The guests included Thurston Moore (playing his solo album Psychic Hearts), Meat Puppets (who took on Meat Puppets II) and Built to Spill, who ran through their beloved 1997 album Perfect From Now On. All Tomorrow’s Parties: My Bloody Valentine, Thurston Moore, Built to Spill Rock the CatskillsPhoto: Jason Bergman Right now, indie rock fans are milling about Kutsher’s Country Club in Monticello, New York at All Tomorrow’s Parties New York, a three-day event with load of loud, arty (and several very good) guitar bands that culminates in a set by My Bloody Valentine, who curated Sunday’s program. Kutsher’s is an old Borscht Belt resort in the Catskills with a pond, tennis courts and décor that screams 1960s. The setting has prompted a number of references to The Shining, but so far, this is one of the coziest festivals Rolling Stone has ever seen: Outside of the venues, it’s wonderfully un-crowded — organizers are expecting only 2,700 fans over the weekend — and artists are just milling about. Head on over to the Rock N Roll Diary for continuing coverage over the weekend — we’ll have highlights, videos and photos here on Rock Daily Monday morning.
