Carpenters Music Video: Dionne Warwick - In Love Alone
Dionne Warwick - In Love Alone
In 1987, four years after Karen's Carpenters death, her brother Richard released his first solo album. On the album TIME, Richard sang lead on six of the 10 songs. Lead vocals on other songs came from Dionne Warwick, Dusty Springfield, and a 16-year-old (in 1987) newcomer named Scott Grimes. The song sung by Dusty Springfield "SOMETHING IN YOUR EYES" was released as a single and did well on the adult contemporary charts. But my favorite track on the album has always been the song sung by Dionne Warwick, "IN LOVE ALONE." Although Richard says that Dusty and Dionne both sang their songs in their own styles, you can clearly hear a few "Karen-esque" moments in both their vocals. In the opening verse of "IN LOVE ALONE," listen to how quietly and controlled Ms. Warwick sings the lyrics - exactly as Karen might have done. [From a 1987 PEOPLE magazine article) "IN LOVE ALONE" was written in 1982 especially for Karen by Richard and lyricist John Bettis, but she didn't live to hear it. "We'd invited Karen to a Christmas party we were having here so we could play it for her," says Richard. "But it was pouring pitchforks, and she didn't want to drive all the way from her apartment. I never really saw her by a piano after that where I could play it for her. She died the following February." Says Warwick of singing "IN LOVE ALONE": "It was probably one of the hardest things I've ever done; listening to it is still difficult. But I'm thrilled that Richard has gotten himself together and is making pretty music again."] This is a song that Karen was supposed to have sung, but circumstances intervened. For this video, I chose to use video footage of both Dionne and Karen singing, as if Karen was singing through Ms. Warwick, or as if Ms. Warwick was channeling Karen's spirit. The "aged" look of the video is intentional, as if this were some long lost video footage only recently discovered. It also helped to mask the unsynchronized lip movements, too. A side-note: At the conclusion, I used video footage of Karen in the fade out. No matter how much I cropped and adjusted the video, at the last moments, she takes on a skeletal appearance, an effect that was unintentional, but a bit startling, nonetheless. As far as I've been able to determine, this was the last song ever written by John Bettis and Richard Carpenter specifically for Karen. IN LOVE ALONE (Lyrics: John Bettis / Music: Richard Carpenter) I memorize the words I want to say I practice every move I'll make I play the scene like you were hear And I feel every breath you take But all my plans just seem to melt away The moment you walk in the room I try to speak but words won't come Till I'm alone again I'm leaving my heart on the shelf Sleep is a place I only cry myself And dream by myself I'm not in love alone We put our two hearts together Just like I've always known Once we begin, we're forever And I will never spend a long night without you again So now you know what I've been going through Now all I really need to know Is why your eyes look so surprised Oh, no! This can't be true! Would you have let me walk away? Why have you kept your feelings locked away? Did I hear you say I'm not in love alone? We put our two hearts together Just like I've always known Once we begin, we're forever And I will never spend a long night without you again
