- HELLA FUNNY!

This album is some of the funniest s--t I've ever heard! My favorite part is the long session of Pedro & Man watching TV. If you like real comedy(and even if you don't!) buy this album!

- Wild!

This Album is just great. From the beginning "Show Her My Ding-Dong" to the last scratch, Cheech and Chong make everything seem funnier.

- "Dave's not here..."

Released in August of 1971, Cheech & Chong's Grammy nominated self-titled debut LP peaked on Billboard's 200 chart at #28. The album was produced by Lou Adler, best known for his work with the

and other DUNHILL label artists. Adler founded both DUNHILL and ODE, Cheech & Chong's label. This one-time manager of

also produced the theatrical films

(1968) and

(1975).

When this first C&C album was released, certain high school and college kids were already fans of the

and their witty counterculture referenced comedy LPs. Richard Marin's and Thomas Chong's humor was far less subtle and quite obsessed with a certain combustible aromatic leaf. On this record, Chong mostly plays a numbed out guy called either "Stoner" or "Man," while the often quick-tongued Cheech did variations of his East L.A. Pedro de Pacas character. Of course there's exceptions, such as a prissy woman judge later reprised as "Sister Mary Elephant," a nearly comatose blues singer, a bell-toned radio DJ and a lowkey commecial spokesman.

A recent playing of an original vinyl copy of CHEECH AND CHONG (SP-77010) reminded me of long-ago friends that were huge fans of this record, and how I always listened with detached bemusement. The stuff seemed DUMB then, and the passage of four decades hasn't made it any wittier. Still, it's nice to remember days of youth, great music, communal circles where healthy lungs were heavily assaulted by THC-laden tar, and especially: the munchies. Far out, man!

.

SIDE ONE NOTES

1.) An elderly blues singer with dropsy cuts a new "rekkid" with his hyper NYC producer. 2.) W.D. "from KRUT Radio" intros Blind Melon in concert. 3.) Ad for a reaaaaally good smoke, from a Man who knows how to "bogart" one! 4.) A platoon from "Today's Army" is sent to destroy a weed patch. 5.) "State vs. Stoner," a possession case.

SIDE TWO NOTES

1.) "Open up. I've got the stuff." 2.) Stoner's wired and asking for pharmaceuticals. 3.) The Prince of Peace is stopped at the Mexican border. 4.) The Pontiff's four conditions. 5.) Pedro and Man light up in La Bamba. 6.) Endless commercials during a movie on TV include used car salesmen "El Monte Slim" and "Sanchez of San Fernando."
