Fricke’s Picks: The Wild Story of the MoveFrom 1966 to 1972, the Move were the greatest British band most Americans never heard. Formed in Birmingham in late 1965, the original five — singer Carl Wayne, guitarist-singer Roy Wood, guitarist Trevor Burton, bassist Ace Kefford and drummer Bev Bevan — were an explosive combination of white-R&B vocal firepower, beyond-the-Who stage theatrics and progressive-pop ambition. In Wood, the Move also had their own one-man Lennon-McCartney, a devilishly ingenious songwriter who mined his witty way with hooks and boy-girl stories with profound sadness (the singalong surrender of “Blackberry Way”) and an eerie fascination with lunacy (the rubber-room delight “Cherry Blossom Clinic”). Yet no other English group of the era was so wildly successful at home — their first four U.K. singles were all Top Five hits — while bombing so hard here. The Move were as unstable as they were brilliant, changing and losing members with each of their four albums and touring America once, playing in three cities in 1969. Finally, Wood, Bevan and singer-guitarist Jeff Lynne, who joined in early 1970, dropped the name and became the Electric Light Orchestra. You know the rest of that story. But there is so much to the wild tale of the Move that it doesn’t fit on the recent generous-bonus-track reissues of those albums: 1968’s Move, 1970’s Shazam and Looking On (all Salvo/Fly), and 1971’s Message From the Country (EMI). Anthology 1966-1972 (Salvo/Fly), a new four-CD fanatic’s dream, goes deep right at the start, with previously unissued rave-ups from the Move’s first recording date and a ‘66 radio session, then traces the band’s rapid evolution through eccentric power pop (”I Can Hear the Grass Grow,” the originally shelved B side “Vote for Me”), paisley cheer (”Flowers in the Rain”) and the heavy grandeur (”Brontosaurus,” “Feel Too Good”) that, with lots of strings and reeds, would become ELO. Rare mixes and outtakes abound, but the live action — an entire disc of 1968 uproar from London’s Mar

Critic’s Picks: Christian Hoard’s Favorite Albums That Didn’t Make the RS Top 50 (You can find Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of the Year here, and Top 100 Singles of the Year here.) 1. Lil Wayne Tha Carter III (Bootleg) This year came and went without Lil Wayne releasing a proper LP, but thanks to the Internet, there was plenty of evidence to back his claim that he’s the best rapper alive. This leaked batch of songs finds Weezy tossing out big-beat pleasures (the Kanye-produced “Did It Before”), referencing Ramadan and Angela Lansbury, and indulging his weird side on “I Feel Like Dying,” a remarkable, very eerie homage to weed. Massively entertaining — and another reason to look forward to the real Carter III. 2. Dizzee Rascal Maths + English (Beggars/xl) On his first two albums, this London MC made hip-hop as tense and action-packed as a John Woo movie. This time he adds some brighter, more accessible moments, alternating dense electro beats and frantic, slang-strewn rhymes with popwise cameos from UGK and Lily Allen. Even better, he pulls it off while managing to sound like no one but himself. 3. Balkan Beat Box Nu Med (Jdub) Killer left-field hip-hop. Helmed by two Israeli expats, this New York band makes beat-centric jams that evoke a strange and wonderful party halfway around the world. Their second album overflows with snatches of klezmer and Gypsy swing, with Ori Kaplan’s sax lines serving as hooks. 4. R. Kelly Double Up (Jive) Say what you like about his misdeeds, dude’s an expert record maker. To the surprise of no one, he still sounds horny as hell, as evidenced by creepy-seductive cuts like “Sex Planet.” There are also excellent club jams, a generic if heartfelt Virginia Tech tribute and “Real Talk,” which borrows the MO of “Trapped in the Closet” for a rant that’s totally indulgent and damn near mesmerizing. 5. Clinic Visitations (Domino) On their fourth album, these minimalist Brits fleshed out their usual spate of distinct, expertly rendered atmospherics with pumped-up tempos and skronked-up guitars. The end result is

McCartney Says Beatles Going Digital in ‘08, New Alice in Chains Album, Queens of the Stone Age Booted From Rehab Clinic According to Paul McCartney, in 2008, the Beatles catalog may finally be available in digital-music stores. McCartney tells Billboard “it’s all happening soon,” and “there’s just maybe one little sticking point left, and I think it’s being cleared up as we speak.” McCartney makes no mention of a possible remastering of the Beatles tracks, however, and instead says that delay is due to “contractual” issues. Alice in Chains, with William DuVall assuming Layne Staley’s vocal duties, are hoping to release an album of new music in the latter half of 2008, even though no complete songs have been written. The band’s last album of new material was 1995’s Alice In Chains. Queens of the Stone Age were forced offstage during a concert at a California drug-rehab center after only one song. The band opted to open their set with “Feel Good Hit of the Summer,” which contains the lyrics “Nicotine, valium, vicodin, marijuana, ecstasy and alcohol/C-c-c-c-cocaine.” Glastonbury Festival founder Michael Eavis was honored by the Queen of England, who took the opportunity to ask about the fest’s infamous mud. Next week, George W. Bush is expected to honor Perry Farrell for all his hard work on Lollapalooza by throwing a kegger. The geniuses at Gibson have created a limited-edition stock of self-tuning, robotic guitars. The guitars would help roadies at concerts who are responsible for tuning numerous guitars, as well as amateurs who have no idea how to find an E.

EXCLUSIVE! Chimaira explain new albumChimaira's new album The Infection will be out on April 27 in the UK through Nuclear Blast Records. In a UK Exclusive, guitarist Rob Arnold gives Kerrang! readers a track-by-track breakdown of the new 10-song release. 01) The Venom Inside "This was the third song written for The Infection, and we knew right away that it was going to be the albums' lead off track. The Venom Inside's sludgy sounding body is surrounded by an epic intro and outro. As an early indicator of what's to come over the next nine tracks, you might get the feeling that you're in for something special." 02) Frozen In Time "With a dynamic range of ups and downs, Frozen In Time takes you through a whirlwind of riffage. From the tracks' explosive intro, to its ferocious bridge, you're left constantly guessing at what's to come. But by the end, it all makes sense. A true monster in my opinion." 03) Coming Alive "With its slithering intro and verse riffs, menacingly heavy vocals, and destructive drums beats, Coming Alive is exactly what it proclaims... A band coming to life in every aspect. The lyrics may perhaps foreshadow some what of a different meaning, but we'll leave that up to the listener to decide." 04) Secrets Of The Dead "A song that went through many structural changes throughout the writing process, Secrets of the Dead turned out to be a band favorite. Chris Spicuzza shines on this track as he conducts a circuit board symphony from behind his station. Catchy, heavy, intelligent, and packed with groove, this one has "crowd pleaser" written all over it." 05) The Disappearing Sun "Arguably the album's heaviest and darkest track, and our first ever tune written in drop B, The Disappearing Sun hits you like a ton of bricks. Andols puts on a clinic with his crafty double bass work, creatively placing his notes in unconventional spots. This song defines "riff-tastic", and will have you humming its melody's all day long." 06) Impending Doom "A trippy, eclectic track that ended up becoming much mo

Because Rehab is The Best Place To Recover From Foot SurgerySteven Tyler went to rehab to recover from foot surgery. The Aerosmith frontman - who checked into California's Las Encinas Hospital's drug rehabilitation clinic last week - denies he was treated for substance abuse, insisting he received medical help and physical therapy for his podiatric problems. In a statement released yesterday (05/29/08), the 'Walk This Way' singer said: "The doctors told me the pain in my feet could be corrected but it would require a few surgeries over time. "The 'foot repair' pain was intense, greater than I had anticipated. The months of rehabilitative care and the painful strain of physical therapy were traumatic. I really needed a safe environment to recuperate where I could shut off my phone and get back on my feet." Tyler - who battled alcoholism and drug abuse in the 70s and 80s - also revealed his foot injuries were caused by his "trademark athletic performance onstage". The 60-year-old rocker has assured Aerosmith fans his current problems will have no effect on the band, adding: "Make no mistake, Aerosmith has no plans to stop rocking. There's a new album to record, then another tour." Party on dudes. Remember Bill and Ted? Supposedly a 3rd one is in the making.

Junkies Unite
Lookin' aces, Petey! Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty are working on a track for Pete's band Babyshambles together. When they come together, is there just a contact high in the room? Does everyone nod off and no one can operate heavy machinery? Imagine - alll the drugs in Britain in one room! They're like a pharmacy except you can't buy rain bonnets and there's scabs and sores!
British singer Amy Winehouse travelled to Pete Doherty's rehab clinic to prepare for their latest track. The Rehab hitmaker, 24, has teamed up with the Babyshambles to record a "ska-type" single close to Doherty's clinic in Wiltshire, England. Winehouse will play the guitar for the collaboration - and her efforts have impressed Babyshambles' guitarist Mik Whitnall.
He says, "She plays better than James Brown playing acoustic guitar.
"She thinks she's s**t but she's not. I've never met a girl who plays like that, let alone a man."
What, passing out ON the guitar and making music from that? How do these people get anything done? And Pete's supposed to be clean now. You can't tell me that beehived walking crack pipe is a good influence on him. The drug content in those pink ballet shoes she's always walking around in alone are enough to get a bitch arrested!

Amy Winehouse On Methadone - Jailed Husband Selling Pics For HeroinAmy Winehouse has reportedly been given methadone and prescription drugs to get her through the BRITs. The troubled singer, who is being treated for her drugs addiction as an outpatient at London's Capio Nightingale Clinic, is "too sick" to battle her withdrawal symptoms alone and has been prescribed the medication to help her focus on Wednesday's performance (02.20.08). A source told Britain's Sunday Mirror newspaper: "Amy would be far too sick if she was made to go cold turkey. Medics have accepted the important thing at the moment is to get Amy through the awards show." Methadone is often prescribed to recovering heroin addicts to help patients battle their withdrawal symptoms. The 24-year-old star will perform two songs at the London ceremony - 'Love Is A Losing Game' with her own band and then join Mark Ronson on stage for their BRIT Award-nominated hit 'Valerie'. Meanwhile, Amy's husband Blake Fielder-Civil - who is currently awaiting trial on charges of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and grievous bodily harm (GBH) in a London jail - was rushed to the prison's hospital after a drugs overdose. Blake, who recently failed three random drug tests, collapsed in his cell after taking what he thought was heroin. Six other inmates were also hospitalized after taking the drug. A Prison Service spokesman confirmed: "A small number of prisoners were treated in health care following the consumption of an unknown substance." It has also been claimed Blake is swapping signed autographs of Amy to fellow inmates in exchange for heroin. A source told Britain's The Sun newspaper: "Blake has to pay for his gear somehow and has no qualms about cashing in on his wife's fame. He takes orders from other inmates then asks Amy to bring in signed photos of herself. He swaps them for a Joey - a hit of heroin, then the inmates sell them on the internet."

Nicole Richie Fatigued After Doing Something Nice For Someone Other Than Herself
Nicole Richie and baby-daddy/terrible band Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden kicked off their new charity, the Richie Madden Children's Foundation, at a surprise baby shower at the Los Angeles Free Clinic yesterday. You know she was like MY NAME FIRST, JOEL! Evil Nicole and hapless Joel gave away over $200,000 in baby gifts to knocked up ladies in need. Their own baby, a boy, is due in January. Nicole told reporters that the expectant moms thought they were joking when they first started passing out gifts. Well yeah, we can totally picture you pretending to pass out a lavish baby item to an outstretched pair of hands and then yanking it back and screaming "psych! loser!" and cackling and stroking the gift and ordering security to beat the woman. It's just in your nature!
Pregnant ladies received Baby Bjorn products, cribs, mattresses, Fisher Price toys, and gift bags of weed and vicodin. Stank aside, it's nice to see generosity on the part of rich people who don't have to care about anything other than whether Louisa cleaned the tiles right and what time their weed dealer can hook it up. Joel describes he and Nicole as "just a young couple having a baby and we're really excited." Until the baby comes, and you're suddenly on a year long tour with several nubile "assistants" and the kid's calling Louisa "Momma" because Richie's out at Fred Segal for the fifth time that day.
11 more photos from the launch of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden's foundation are after the jump.
