Clipse: Most viewed pictures

by: Erika Ramirez Kidz in the Hall are not like the others, even if critics say Double-O and Nawledge belong in the room reserved for hipster rappers. If only these same critics would listen to their sophomore album The In Crowd (Duck Down Records). As the album title implies, the duo are not trying to be affiliated with a marginalized sub-group within the hip hop spectrum, they are aiming to appeal to the masses while keeping their integrity intact. A mixture of Double-O’s eclectic soundscapes and Nawledge’s premature yet nostalgic lyricism spill through out The In Crowd – a much more cohesive effort than their debut album School Was My Hustle. Proof of Kidz’s attempt to please a myriad of hip hop tastes lies in the collaborations: Whereas School Was My Hustle was light on them, The In Crowd has a smorgasbord of partnerships from Estelle to Bun B; hardly the type of artists hipsters champion. On the day their album hits stores, VIBE.com talked to Kidz in The Hall about their new direction and some of the highlights they remember from the making of The In Crowd. VIBE.com: What’s the feel of The In Crowd? Double-O: It’s the greatest album ever sold. Nawledge: We stand at a certain position in this hip hop game, where we can make any type of record for any type of person, and appeal to any type of rap fan. That’s kind of what The In Crowd symbolizes. We got everybody from Travis from Gym Class Heroes, to Camp Lo to Black Milk, Guilty Simpson all the way to Buckshot, Sean Price, The Cool Kids, Bun B, [and] Pusha T from the Clipse, Which one of those artists made you feel like you couldn’t believe this just happened? Naledge: It was definitely memorable to work with Sean Price and Buckshot, those are the people I really looked up to, also Camp Lo. It was an honor to actually meet those dudes. Estelle is probably the realist, realist person we’ve ever dealt with. You guy’s definitely killed some old school tracks and still kept it origi

Clipse Back in the ClipIf hell hath no fury, then revenge is sweet. According to a press release from Sony/Columbia, Rick Rubin and industry celeb A&R Kyambo "Hip Hop" Joshua (who was featured in VIBE's 2007 Juice issue) have signed Pusha and Malice, aka Clipse, to the label. This comes after the duo's much-publicized/maligned relationship with Jive Records, who last dropped their critically acclaimed but-not-quite-box-office-poppin 2006 release, Hell Hath No Fury.

"No Ground Under" by Ghislain PoirierMontreal-based DJ Ghislain Poirier is a busy man with a busier passport. He's remixed everyone from Clipse and Lil Wayne to Lady Sovereign, and he's also a global traveler well-known for his fiery and brilliant mixes of African hip-hop. In his own music, Poirier favors no-nonsense beats underpinned by generous dollops of sub-bass. Just as often, though, he complicates a hip-hop and dancehall palette with production trickery that can occasionally be hit-and-miss. Poirier's strengths and weaknesses are writ large on his third album, No Ground Under. The hypnotic intricacies of the instrumental track "One Hand Can't Clap" are a great example—at the heart of a swarm of bells and drums is a direct and compelling rhythm that's stated at the beginning. You have to admire the densely-programmed beat acrobatics that follow, but it does end up a bit scattered. The track's title is a nod to the wisdom of a Wolof. While "One Hand Can't Clap" (the track) is, in fact, Poirier's work alone,

Single Minded: Guns n’ Roses Remix, Jay-Z Mash-Up, Clipse Mixtape and More Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. Guns n’ Roses, “Sweet Ass Child O Mine” [DJ Donna Summer Remix] There’s something about the utter bastardization of Axl Rose’s original intent that makes this irresistible. If Axl gets an earful of this, Chinese Democracy will probably be delayed even further, just out of spite. Clipse, We Got it 4 Cheap Vol. 3 [Mixtape] Alert your local blogger: VA’s Clipse return with another mixtape about drug slinging and the grief it brings. At some point, Clipse will have to get another shtick. We humbly suggest the guilt that accompanies a McDonald’s Third Pounder, which is just as addictive as crack and twice as bad for you. Various Artists, Cyndi Lauper & David Byrne Covers [Covers] Would that this were Lauper covering Byrne, and vice-versa. Instead, it’s a host of other artists taking a crack at two opposite ends of the Eighties canon. You’ll be drawn to Smashing Pumpkins’ “Once in a Lifetime” cover — much like a baby reaches out for a lit blowtorch, because it’s “pretty.” Friends, resist the impulse. Jay-Z vs. Fela Kuti, “Roc Boys (Mike Love’s Nigerian Gangster Mix)” [Mash-up] Unable to secure a future touring commitment from John Stamos, the most controversial Beach Boy has taken to creating a series of Fela Kuti-based mash-ups. This is a step up from his days combining African superstars with Eighties one-hit wonders, bottoming out with the notorious “What I Like About Hugh Masekela” mixtape. Various Artists, Tropical Static/Cuban Funk [Mixtapes] Two insanely great mixtapes, one of which focuses on the laid-back sound of Guinea, Mali and Senegal, the other of which is walloping Cuban funk. So you now have a soundtrack for both Saturday morning and Saturday night.

Jessica Simpson Heads to Nashville, Lil Wayne Announces “Carter III,” Natalie Portman Makes a Mixtape Pop music is set to lose another of its starlets to country music. Jessica Simpson is leaving the not-so-friendly confines of Los Angeles and hunkering down in Nashville to start work on her next country-flavored album with John Rich of Big & Rich serving as writer. Previously, Kelly Clarkson NASCARed over to the red states to begin work on her own, Reba McEntire-backed country album. Actress Natalie Portman is a compiling a mix tape that will change your life on iTunes, with proceeds benefiting FINCA. The comp will feature exclusive tracks from Devendra Banhart, Beirut and, of course, The Shins. Like any artist in modern music, Lil Wayne is aware of album leaks. Going on the offensive, Lil Wayne will release Tha Carter III: The Leak on December 18th, which will feature Weezy’s tracks from mixtapes and the Internet. Then in February, Wayne will release the proper, still-unleaked Tha Carter III, which boasts appearances by Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. After volleys of album delays and shit-talking, the battle between Clipse and Jive Records has finally ended. But instead of going all Radiohead on us, Clipse will join forces with Columbia Records, who, under the watchful eye of Rick Rubin, will hopefully treat them better. AT&T’s Blue Room will stream (presumably unedited) performances from this weekend’s Vegoose Festival in Las Vegas. It’s a big music weekend: Voodoo Music Experience will take place in New Orleans and San Francisco hosts Neil Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit. Check back Monday for photos from all three events.
