Collective Soul: Most viewed pictures

Comment of the Week: Metallica Channel An Unlikely AssociationAny time Metallica gets mentioned on Rock Daily, it’s always a catalyst for commenters, and this week’s premiere of new single “The Day That Never Comes” was no exception. Opinions varied, from people who believe it’s a phenomenal return to form to those who think the band should hang it up. Commenter Olgasm even compared Metallica to a band that no other reader brought up. “This is about 3 minutes too long and sounds like a medley of riffs from their mid-career. They’ve gone all “Collective Soul” and sprinkled good riffs among a field of cow pies.” Perhaps there’s a future in James Hetfield and Co. covering “Shine” at their upcoming shows in Europe.

Album Preview: Snoop Goes Back to Everybody Else’s Old School on “Ego Trippin’ “ For anyone longing for the days when low-fi Soul Train space funk ruled the airwaves, Snoop Dogg’s “Sensual Seduction” provided a welcome salve. While Snoop’s ninth album Ego Trippin’ isn’t a solid hour of vocoder-aided sex jams, as Rock Daily learned in an exclusive listening session, it’s something much more. Clearly run down by the traditional hip-hop tropes and traditions, Snoop has made Trippin’ into a veritable buffet of twentieth century radio goodness, throwing back to scenes with which he’s never been involved. In between Roger Troutman-esque funk bangers like “Snoop Dogg Is Out” and “Life of the Party” are forays into the Dirty South (”Ridin’ in My Chevy”), celestial gospel (”Can’t Say Goodbye”) and at least one song that sounds like a B-side from Prince’s 1999 (”Cool”). Perhaps most impressively, there’s a phenomenal country-rap tune called “Johnny Cash” (a collaboration with Everlast) whose chorus (”Get my money/Buy my medicine”) channels rail-riding bluesmen. Produced by Snoop in collaboration with Teddy Riley and DJ Quik (a collective they refer to as “QDT”), Ego Trippin’ will reveal all sides of Snoop Dogg: the father, the party animal, the savvy industry veteran and the OG. Single Minded: Jay-Z Set to Showtunes, Janis Joplin, Live De La Soul, Peanuts Remix and a Very Reggae Christmas Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. American Gangster Opera [The Rap Up] To the delight of high school music teachers everywhere (and the collective horror of their students), someone has set Jay-Z’s latest opus to sliced-up snippets of opera and Broadway showtunes. Kids: Whatever they make you do with this, it can’t be as bad as having to research the lyrics to “We Didn’t Start the Fire.” Trust us. Vince Guaraldi, “Linus & Lucy” [Pocketknife Remix] Well, the youth of America have finally run out of things to remix. Upside: this is fantastic, jittery and jubilant and out-of-control. We’d like to think this comes from Linus’s “lost years,” when he bought bright sneakers and strange pants and always seemed to have a cold. Janis Joplin, “Me & Bobby McGee” [Demo] Stripped-back version of Joplin’s posthumous classic is a glorious combination of ragged singing and off-the-cuff studio banter. Legend has it that Joplin went into the studio to bang out this version and, presto, eight years later Pink was born. De La Soul, Live in France 2007 [Daily Motion] A healthy portion of a live De La show — in Montmarte, of all places. Bonus: thanks to the subtitles, you get to learn how to say “It’s not bouncing” in French. Distinctly Jamaican Reggae [Jammin Ja Sounds] Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus: unbeatable reggae blog Distinctly Jamaican Sounds gives you a holiday mixtape, and casually suggests holly might be useful for something other than just hall-decking.

Music review of Gorillaz's 'Plastic Beach'Imagine mysterious British street artist Banksy fronting the Banana Splits and you'll pretty much get the point of Gorillaz, the virtual side project of occasional Blur frontman Damon Albarn. A shape-shifting, multi-platinum hip-pop collective that uses cartoon stand-ins in videos and onstage, Gorillaz tends to make the same album over and over: futuristic minglings of hip-hop, electro, pop and reggae featuring the same micro-preoccupations (Hollywood action stars, R&B old-timers, De La Soul, Af

iPhones Are For Virgins [To Do] newVideoPlayer("/todoemail_def.flv", 506, 423,""); Occasionally, I take a post-work nap before waking up to film the next night's To Do list. And on those occasions when I wake up from said naps, I am usually greeted with some sort of surprise. Typically, it's a pile of dog crap on the floor of my closet (Thanks, Wagandstuff!), but last night it was a spirited email from my partner in hate-crime, one Miss Edward Gottomesmerize Jolie Hyphen Pitt. In true EGJHP form, the email could only be described as "on point", and therefore I felt it would be selfish of me not to share it with you in its entirety.
