SXSW 2008: A Dozen of the Most Anticipated Sets The annual South by Southwest Music Festival begins tonight, and Rock Daily will be reporting live from the mosh pit (and the barbecue pit) until the last note is played on Sunday. Stay tuned to our SXSW page for live reviews, video interviews, photo galleries and footage of some of the hottest gigs (and while you’re at it, catch up on what went down at last year’s festival while you’re there). In the meantime, take a look at the twelve bands Rock Daily is most excited about — six heavy hitters and six up-and-comers. Big Bands • R.E.M.: The venerable band is about to release its best album in years, and they are treating SXSW as their coming out party. • Body of War (featuring Tom Morello, Serj Tankian, Ben Harper and Kimya Dawson): Some of the participants in the soundtrack to the Iraq veteran documentary Body of War will get together for what will be equally rocking and heartfelt. • My Morning Jacket: My Morning Jacket are perpetual festival heroes; look for them to debut new tracks from their upcoming album Evil Urges. • Paramore: The young’uns from Tennessee take their platinum success to their first SXSW. • Vampire Weekend: The New York band has ridden the buzz wave right into downtown Austin. • N.E.R.D.: Pharrell Williams’ rap/rock/psych collective will bring some boogie to the festival and likely a special guest or two. Baby Bands • Robyn: Sweden’s favorite comeback kid puts on fantastically energetic, potty-mouthed performances. • Duffy: The Welsh Dusty Springfield look-alike has topped the charts in the U.K.; Austin may be the first step in her conquest of America. • She & Him: Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward will keep their momentum going on the eve of the release of their debut album Volume 1. • Does It Offend You, Yeah?: This electro-rock outfit are already critical darlings in England; you’ll be hearing from them a lot in the coming months.

Comment Box: Can We Call Mickey Rourke a 'Comeback Kid' Yet?Mickey Rourke hoists his Golden Globe backstage at last night's awards ceremony in Los Angeles. (Getty Images) Did "The Wrestler" live up to your expectations? Is Mickey on a roll and will it end with redemption or death for everyone's favorite creep? -- from last week's Celebritology Live discussion I'm glad you asked because since seeing "The Wrestler" a couple weeks back I have been evangelizing for Mickey Rourke's triumphant, and long overdue, return to cinematic form. Sure, it would've been nice if he still had that lovable baby face that made him dangerously attractive in early movies like "Rumble Fish" and "Diner," but years of boxing injuries and self-destructive behavior don't seem to have dulled Rourke's acting chops one bit. Don't take my word for it -- last night Rourke beat back competition from Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Frank Langella and Sean Penn to pick up the Golden

In Praise of Robert Downey Jr.Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan arrive at the premiere of his latest movie, 'Tropic Thunder.' (Getty Images) A lot has already been said in praise of Robert Downey Jr. He's the ultimate comeback kid, giving hope to fallen stars and recovering addicts the world over. And, although in the picture above he couldn't possibly look more like Wayne Newton, it is nearly impossible to snark at this guy -- who has gone from less than zero to iron man (literally and figuratively) over the course of his 20-some year career. Though he came of age on film in schlocky teen fare like "Weird Science" and "Tuff Turf" (and we all know "Pretty in Pink's" Duckie Dale was just a cheap RDJ rip-off) it wasn't long before Downey was leaving peers like Anthony Michael Hall behind to take on more challenging roles and garner critical praise.
