Review: 'Smokin' Aces' zippily pointlessJanuary used to be Hollywood's official doldrums month. It still is, only now it's a snazzier, more depraved wasteland. Take "Smokin' Aces," an entertaining, Tarantino-esque film about hitmen, feds and a Mob magician. It's cool -- and empty.

The Biggest Mob Crackdown Since Junior Got Indicted In Sopranos Season OneYou know how when you're watching "The Sopranos", and the characters are watching the news, and the lead story is always "John Sacrimoni, aka, 'Johnny Sack', the head of the Sacrimoni New York Crime Family, may be indicted tomorrow" and Paulie says "Hey Tone, thinks we gotta have a goin' away party for Johnny?" and Tony goes "Oooooaaahhhhhhwwwww!" [SIC] and Chris goes "Take it easy, he's just breakin' balls", and you're sitting there saying, "Why would this actually be on the news? What a lame way to cram in the exposition." Well sometimes, in real life, mob crackdowns do make the news, and you really can't exaggerate the cartoonishness of the characters involved: In a stunning show of force, federal authorities swooped down on more than 50 Gambino, Genovese and Bonanno crime family members early this morning, locking them up on an array of charges including murder and labor racketeering. Among those named in the indictment were Gambino acting boss John (Jackie Nose) D'Amico, underboss Domenico (Italian Dom) Cefalu, consigliere Joseph (Jo Jo) Corozzo, powerhouse capo Nicholas (Little Nick) Corozzo, John Gotti Sr.'s brother, Vincent, and his nephew, Richard Gotti Jr. You can't make this crap up, people. "Italian Dom"?? How is that an acceptable nickname for a mobster? It's just his actual name with his nationality before it, and it doesn't even rhyme. I would heretofore like to retroactively withdraw my complaints about the news on "The Sopranos" always really specifically mentioning the characters in order to help move the plot forward. Sometimes, the mob really is on the news, and sometimes, real-life mobsters are even more ridiculous than tv ones. Except maybe Tony's bald driver dude in Season 6. (via Gawker)

We Own The Night ReviewWe Own The Night reunites director James Gray with two of the stars of his crime drama The Yards, Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg. The film, penned by Gray, takes its title from the motto of the NYPD's 1980s street crimes unit. Set in 1988, the story follows Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix), the manager of El Caribe -- a Russian-owned nightclub in Brooklyn's Brighton Beach. He lives a carefree life with his beloved girlfriend Amanda (Eva Mendes), spending every night in a drug-induced haze of music and partying. Bobby, however, is not who he seems; his real surname is Grusinsky and he's the black sheep son in a family of NYPD officers. Bobby's brother, Joseph (Wahlberg), and dad, Burt (Robert Duvall), are veteran cops out to bring down the burgeoning Russian mob -- a mission that leads them to raid El Caribe. This bust not only enrages Bobby, but also incurs the wrath of vicious gangster Vadim Nezhinski (Alex Veadov) who seeks to get even with the cops who crossed him. After Vadim retaliates, Bobby and Amanda find themselves caught in a war between the cops and the mob. Bobby finally chooses which side he's on and tries to make amends by helping the cops target Vadim, who doesn't realize Bobby is actually a Grusinsky. (This hoary cliche actually has a basis in fact, as anyone from certain neighborhoods in New York, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia could tell you.) Thankfully, Gray's characters are weighty and dimensional enough to allow the viewer to overlook the generic nature of the story. Gray also manages to spice up such familiar genre set-pieces as a
