Ahmet Ertegun Memorialized in New York City Towards the end of Tuesday night’s star-packed tribute to late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, Neil Young spoke for his fellow artists: “Ahmet was our man,” he said, after singing “Helplessly Hoping” with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. “I just hope that today’s musicians have someone like Ahmet, because we were really lucky.” Crosby and Nash then stepped offstage, leaving Stills and Young to perform an emotional version o

Graham Nash Talks “Reflections” Box Set, Performs “Right Between the Eyes”On his way to Rolling Stone headquarters in New York to talk about his new three-CD career spanning box set, Graham Nash began thinking about a song he wrote in the city more than 40 years ago. “I was seduced by a beautiful woman down in Long Island,” Nash says. “She was married. The song is a confession to a friend.” Nash sang us an acoustic version of the track, “Right Between The Eyes,” for what he believes is the first time in 20 years (click above for the exclusive video). It’s one of 64 tracks on Reflections, which traces his career from the Hollies through the many incarnations of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to his recent solo work. “I went through 44 versions of the set before I settled on this one,” he says. “It was painful for me because I’m not for introspection or resting on my laurels. A lot of the musical soundtrack to my life is on this box set.” Nash plans on hitting the road this summer for Crosby, Stills and Nash’s 40th anniversary tour. He’s also in the early stages of recording a new covers album with his famed trio under the guidance of producer Rick Rubin. The last time Nash was hanging at Rolling Stone along with David Crosby and Stephen Stills, the trio took us track-by-track through the making of their landmark self-titled debut album: • Track by Track: Crosby, Stills & Nash on Their Self-Titled Debut Related Stories: • Crosby, Stills and Nash Talk About Their New Movie and Old Bands • Exclusive Clip: CSNY: Deja Vu • Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young: 2000 Feature

Track by Track: Crosby, Stills & Nash on Their Self-Titled DebutRolling Stone recently sat down with Crosby, Stills & Nash to go track by track through their landmark 1969 debut album. Recorded before Neil Young joined their ranks, it contains many of their most enduring songs. “We were in love with each other at the time we recorded that album,” Graham Nash says. “We were new friends discovering new parts about each other and we had songs. And we had the ability to translate those songs into records that was astounding and we knew it. When we walked out of the studio with that two-track under our arm, we knew what it was going to do. We knew that it was going to be a hit. We knew that we had nailed something that wasn’t really that popular kind of then. It was all Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix and stuff and here comes this little acoustic record.” Here’s the story behind seven songs from Crosby, Stills & Nash: • Track by Track: Crosby, Stills & Nash on Their Debut Album

News Ticker: CSNY, Britney Spears, Led Zeppelin CSNY – Déjà Vu, the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young documentary directed by Neil Young, has been picked up for distribution. The band hopes to release the new politically-charged documentary before the November elections. Britney Spears was involved in another minor car accident on Tuesday. Spears’ Mercedes rear-ended a Ford Explorer in Beverly Hills, but no one was injured and no damage was done to either car. Music engineer Larry Levine, an associate of famed producer Phil Spector and the creator of the “Wall of Sound” recording technique, died at the age of eighty. David Coverdale has retracted claims that his band Whitesnake would open up for Led Zeppelin for their reunion tour, and that Led Zeppelin is going to have a reunion tour at all. [Photo: Getty]

Neil Young’s Rough Ride: A Look Back at the Freedom of Speech Tour When Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young tore into “Let’s Impeach the President” in Atlanta in August 2006, they faced an overwhelming chorus of boos and raised middle fingers. The band seemed calm onstage, but today Neil Young says he feared for his safety throughout the entire Freedom of Speech Tour. “I was a nervous wreck by the end of that thing,” he says. “We had to deal with death threats and bomb-sniffing dogs the whole time.” The Atlanta concert is a pivotal scene in CSNY Déjà Vu, a documentary chronicling the tour, directed by Bernard Shakey (a.k.a. Young), which premiered at Sundance. Click here for an interview with Young in which he discusses the documentary, the presidential election and his plans for the future. Neil Young’s Biggest Fan Speaks: “His Voice Is Haunting,” Says Donald TrumpTwo years ago we noticed the bizarre trio of Patti Smith, Salman Rushdie and Donald Trump rocking out to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in the first two rows of Madison Square Garden. Last year, the Donald was sitting upfront for Young’s solo show at the United Palace Theater and on Monday Trump was again grooving to Neil at the Garden. We gave Trump a call yesterday to discuss. “He’s got something very special,” Trump says. “I’ve listened to his music for years and I’ve seen him before that, but I went to the concert where they were honoring Bob Dylan years ago at Madison Square Garden [Bob Fest 10/16/92] and Neil got up and totally brought the house down. There was nobody close. He’s performed for me at my casinos over the years and he just brings it down. I’ve met him on occasions and he’s a terrific guy.” Does Trump have a favorite Neil Young song or album? “It’s sort of all favorite,” he says. “I like the older stuff better, which is typical with a lot of artists — hence the famous Ricky Nelson song ‘Garden Party.’ I like all his songs, you know, ‘Rock and Roll’ — just great stuff. His voice is perfect and haunting. He’s 63 and I don’t think it’s changed. It’s more important than his playing, ’cause you have so many great players — but there’s just one voice like that. Whatever the hell ‘it’ is, he’s got it.”
