Cypress Hill Recruit Tom Morello, Sample CSN on Rocking New LPPhotograph by James Minchin It has been six years since Cypress Hill’s last album, Til Death Do Us Part, but the breather afforded the West Coast stoner hip-hop troupe time to reel in big-name collaborators for their newest disc. Rise Up, the group’s eighth studio release, set to be (appropriately) unleashed on the blazer-friendly holiday 4/20, features guest appearances from Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, System of a Down’s Daron Malakian and J.Lo hubby Marc

Video: Live at the John Varvatos’ CBGB Opening Party The symbolism of a luxury retailer inhabiting the space recently vacated by CBGB (birthplace of punk and all that) is a little unsettling. But John Varvatos is fashion’s most rock-obsessed designer, and the opening party for the new space turned into the biggest all-star jam outside of a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. In just the first half of the show Ronnie Spector, Ian Hunter and Joan Jett all tore through their biggest hits with the killer Loser’s Lounge house band. The second half was even better: MC5 frontman Wayne Kramer kicked out the jams with Slash, Jerry Cantrell and Tom Morello — and then Perry Farrell appeared (they nailed “Mountain Song,” totally the greatest Jane’s Addiction tune ever) as did Sen Dog of Cypress Hill, who’s still explaining about how he just doesn’t give a damn. The Hold Steady closed the party around three — six or so hours of open bar after the doors opened. Click above for video of all the highlights. [Video: Pete Maiden]

EW has a synopsis of the premiere episode, in which AM aided a 20-year-old heroin addict and explained how eerie it felt to hold a crack pipe after so many years of recovery. Cypress Hill’s Smokeout will be held October 23rd and 24th at the San Manuel Amphitheatre in San Bernardino, Californ

Tom Morello Welcomes Slash, Perry Farrell, Flea at All-Star “Justice Tour” Stop Tom Morello kicked off his seven-city “Justice Tour” last night by calling every able-bodied rock legend in Los Angeles for a surreal night of music and social awareness at the Troubadour. “This is what happens when I go through my Blackberry,” Morello joked to the crowd before Stuart Copeland snuck behind the drums and Perry Farrell grabbed the mike for a thundering version of the Police’s “Message in a Bottle” just twenty minutes into the evening. It was the start of a marathon night that would showcase unforgettable collaborations by rock royalty for more than three and half hours. The concert featured early acoustic performances by Morello, Pete Yorn, Jerry Cantrell and the MC5’s Wayne Kramer. Morello — acting as master of ceremonies and orchestrating the chaos — then brought out what would serve as the nucleus of the evening’s house band: Travis Barker on drums, Flea playing bass and a rotating lineup of Steve Vai, Slash, Dave Navarro and Morello sharing guitar duties. The dream team backed up Cantrell for a version of Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak” and rocked out covers such as Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” Throughout the evening Morello spoke about the tour’s goal of promoting local social activism and tackling problems endemic to each host city. While the activism is integral to the tour, Morello is quick to point out that the mood is celebratory and he views each night as “a freedom party.” Sen Dog and B-Real of Cypress Hill didn’t need any help celebrating as they arrived onstage (joint in hand) to knock out “Insane in the Brain” and “Rock Superstar.” Morello closed out the show with a poignant rendition of the Woody Guthrie classic “This Land is Your Land” (like he did at SXSW) that had every voice in the packed club singing backup. "Charlotte Sometimes" by Charlotte SometimesOften dark, but mostly engaging, Charlotte Sometimes is a wonderful pop enigma. She's the kind of songwriter that defies convention in favor of honesty, but she manages to have a ball in her defiance. As she croons, "How I Could Just Kill A Man," you can see the smirk on her pretty face widen. She's too smart for a cover, so she just jacks one line in said song. Over the course of her eponymous three-song debut EP, Charlotte channels early Fiona Apple through a Dresden Dolls-style theatrical delivery. In a word, brilliant! "Waves and the Both of Us" tells the explicit story of a rather vivid summer tryst through a captivating melody and soaring vocals. Meanwhile, "Sweet Valium High" might as well be musical opium as chemically beautiful lyrics sail over woozy, synth flourishes. Charlotte's blunt, and sometimes profane, but that often comes with creating something sacred. Besides, how many young female songwriters have the balls to bite Cypress Hill's style while singing about
