Cypress Hill Recruit Tom Morello, Sample CSN on Rocking New LPPhotograph by James Minchin It has been six years since Cypress Hill’s last album, Til Death Do Us Part, but the breather afforded the West Coast stoner hip-hop troupe time to reel in big-name collaborators for their newest disc. Rise Up, the group’s eighth studio release, set to be (appropriately) unleashed on the blazer-friendly holiday 4/20, features guest appearances from Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda, System of a Down’s Daron Malakian and J.Lo hubby Marc

Slash Joins the Sunset Strip Festival to Honor L.A.’s Rich Rock History Although Los Angeles’ Sunset Strip is most infamous for the rock & roll debauchery of the ’80s when bands like Guns n’ Roses, Motley Crue and Poison roamed the L.A. streets in leather and hairspray, the Strip has also fostered artists like Nat King Cole and Marilyn Monroe, and served as the playground for the Doors and Janis Joplin. It’s this rich and diverse history that was honored at the first Sunset Strip Music Festival this weekend. The festivities kicked off Thursday night with a tribute at the House of Blues honoring the Godfathers of the Strip: Lou Adler (the Roxy), Mario Maglieri (the Whisky A Go Go, the Rainbow Bar & Grill) and Elmer Valentine (Whisky, Roxy, Rainbow). Sugar Ray frontman and Access Hollywood host Mark McGrath emceed the event with presenters like Slash, Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas and Cheech and Chong, while Camper Van Beethoven, Soul Asylum and Everclear performed. “The fact that the Rainbow is the longest standing rock & roll institution in the world and is still there… deserves props,” said Slash, introducing Maglieri. Slash then recalled fond memories of dressing in drag in his mother’s clothing to sneak into the Rainbow for ladies’ night since his fake ID wasn’t working. “It was fun, until I found myself standing in the Rainbow in girls’ clothing by myself. It was a novel idea at the time.” Michelle Phillips, who introduced Valentine, also had fond memories of the early days of the Strip: “There aren’t music scenes that this today, so it’s really important to honor such a meaningful scene that these three guys created.” Other highlights of the three-day fest included Friday night’s B-Real show at the Whisky A Go-Go with special guest Slash, who put the crowd into a frenzy for the set’s two closing songs, the Cypress Hill hit “Rock Superstar” and Gn’R’s “Paradise City.

Charlotte Sometimes Covers Cypress Hill, Gets “Gangsta” “I’m ghettofabulous, you know,” Charlotte Sometimes jokes as she explains how her first single — which incorporates Cypress Hill’s “How I Could Just Kill A Man” — came to be. “My producer, Sam Hollander, came up to me and asked if I knew the Cypress Hill song and I’m like ‘Yeah, but what does that have to do with me? I’m just a little white girl from Jersey!’” On Hollander’s suggestion, Charlotte — who draws her name from a children’s book character — took the 1991 hit and reworked it to reflect a current relationship. “Actually, the guy [I was dating] had said ‘How can you just kill me like this?’ so I was like ‘I can be totally gangsta with your heart!’” The success of “How I Could Just Kill a Man,” (the video for which recently jumped into heavy rotation on both VH1 and MTV) has helped the spunky twenty-year-old former dancer find success with her debut Waves and the Both of Us. “It’s really a young people’s record,” Charlotte describes, adding she wrote it while coping with a breakup and the struggle of living on her own for the first time after graduating high school. “I totally wear my heart on my sleeve; I’m one of those people who can’t keep my own secrets, so it was really easy for me to be revealing,” she says. The album’s brutal honesty is paired with summer-ready melodies that are perfect for Charlotte’s upcoming stint on the Warped Tour. “It’s going to be like summer camp,” Charlotte predicts. “Except with a bunch of smelly dudes.”

Tom Morello Welcomes Slash, Perry Farrell, Flea at All-Star “Justice Tour” Stop Tom Morello kicked off his seven-city “Justice Tour” last night by calling every able-bodied rock legend in Los Angeles for a surreal night of music and social awareness at the Troubadour. “This is what happens when I go through my Blackberry,” Morello joked to the crowd before Stuart Copeland snuck behind the drums and Perry Farrell grabbed the mike for a thundering version of the Police’s “Message in a Bottle” just twenty minutes into the evening. It was the start of a marathon night that would showcase unforgettable collaborations by rock royalty for more than three and half hours. The concert featured early acoustic performances by Morello, Pete Yorn, Jerry Cantrell and the MC5’s Wayne Kramer. Morello — acting as master of ceremonies and orchestrating the chaos — then brought out what would serve as the nucleus of the evening’s house band: Travis Barker on drums, Flea playing bass and a rotating lineup of Steve Vai, Slash, Dave Navarro and Morello sharing guitar duties. The dream team backed up Cantrell for a version of Thin Lizzy’s “Jailbreak” and rocked out covers such as Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” Throughout the evening Morello spoke about the tour’s goal of promoting local social activism and tackling problems endemic to each host city. While the activism is integral to the tour, Morello is quick to point out that the mood is celebratory and he views each night as “a freedom party.” Sen Dog and B-Real of Cypress Hill didn’t need any help celebrating as they arrived onstage (joint in hand) to knock out “Insane in the Brain” and “Rock Superstar.” Morello closed out the show with a poignant rendition of the Woody Guthrie classic “This Land is Your Land” (like he did at SXSW) that had every voice in the packed club singing backup. Video: Live at the John Varvatos’ CBGB Opening Party The symbolism of a luxury retailer inhabiting the space recently vacated by CBGB (birthplace of punk and all that) is a little unsettling. But John Varvatos is fashion’s most rock-obsessed designer, and the opening party for the new space turned into the biggest all-star jam outside of a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony. In just the first half of the show Ronnie Spector, Ian Hunter and Joan Jett all tore through their biggest hits with the killer Loser’s Lounge house band. The second half was even better: MC5 frontman Wayne Kramer kicked out the jams with Slash, Jerry Cantrell and Tom Morello — and then Perry Farrell appeared (they nailed “Mountain Song,” totally the greatest Jane’s Addiction tune ever) as did Sen Dog of Cypress Hill, who’s still explaining about how he just doesn’t give a damn. The Hold Steady closed the party around three — six or so hours of open bar after the doors opened. Click above for video of all the highlights. [Video: Pete Maiden]

Slick Rick, Cypress Hill, De La Soul Get All-Star Tributes at VH1’s Hip Hop HonorsPhoto: Gries/Getty While most of the country tuned into the Vice Presidential debate last night and wondered what the future holds, the crowd at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom looked back at rap history at VH1’s Fifth Annual Hip Hop Honors. But there was some politicking in the house: After a set from resident DJ Biz Markie, host Tracy Morgan opened the show with a bit about being the President of the People, while fans on the floor waved campaign signs endorsing SLICK RICK and CYPRESS HILL ‘08, two of the evening’s honorees alongside Too $hort, De La Soul and Naughty by Nature. The show premieres on VH1 October 6th and 10 PM. Before the show, Slick Rick offered a personal political endorsement. “I want to thank Governor David Paterson, it’s a good thing we have a decent person in government,” he said of the New York governor who granted him a pardon for murder charges last May. Then the tributes began with a look back at Cypress Hills’ early days. Hip-hop was still rebel music when Cypress Hill rhymed about smoking weed and how they could just kill a man in the early ’90s. Fat Joe ignited the opening tribute to the group while B-Real, Sen Dog and crew nodded with approval from their seats. Jim Jones took over on “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That” before Gym Class Heroes lit up “Insane in the Membrane,” B-Real’s nasal delivery getting drowned out by the band as the scent of marijuana wafted through the balcony. Next, Estelle and Q-Tip teamed up for “A Roller Skating Jam Named ‘Saturdays’ ” in honor of De La Soul. Mos Def and Public Enemy turned “Stakes Is High” into a battle cry before Cee-Lo entered, adorned in silver silk, followed by EPMD and De La Soul themselves, who breezed through “Me, Myself and I” and “Buddy.” “He was the hero, the villain, the man,” former Giants defensive end Michael Strahan said as he introduced the Slick Rick tribute. MC Lyte showed she’s still got it before Busta Rhymes, in a turquoise eye-patch and matching vest-suit, took over. Biz Mark

Vegoose Festival Report: Rage Against the Machine, the Stooges, Shins, Daft Punk, More For three years now, the Vegoose festival has been bringing Las Vegas the sort of eclectic acts the city normally shuns: metal, hip-hop, politically motivated tunage and indie rock’s latest beloved. This year was no exception: the first day alone delivered Mastodon, Public Enemy, M.I.A. and the Shins. Throw in Saturday night performances by Iggy and the Stooges and Daft Punk, and you might just have the most musically diverse day in Sin City history. (For a full photo gallery from Vegoose, click here.) From the start great music was plentiful. Gogol Bordello opened the festival with one of the strongest sets of the weekend. Backed by two percussionist/dancers, ferocious fiddle playing and singer Eugene Hutz’s manic presence, the band won over an audience that seemed delightfully surprised by the band’s gypsy-punk attack. As with many of the afternoon bands, the Vegoose set was only the beginning of their Vegas trip. After performing, the band did a signing in a makeshift Zia Records tent in the Vegoose field, before heading to downtown Las Vegas where bandmembers spun discs at Beauty Bar until 3 AM. Not everything worked. Bands like the Shins (who wore costumes) and Blonde Redhead (who did not) found their more intricate music bleed away by the acoustics of a vast field and competing bands. Vegoose has three active stages and overlap between sets made it hard to see everything even for the most dedicated fans. Perhaps the biggest disappointment of Saturday was competing sets between Cypress Hill and Public Enemy (who arranged for that?). Still, some of the Cypress audience popped over long enough to join Chuck D for a rousing chant of “Fuck George Bush.” Other of Chuck D’s pronouncements on affairs of State might have been a bit over the crowd’s head: His complaints that the Euro and Pound were kicking American ass ellicited a collective “huh?” As night descended with dust filling the air from the dirt field, Iggy and the Stooges came out and gra
