Creed’s Stapp Talks Breakup, Make-Up and Shaved HeadIn his dressing room before Creed’s first gig of a two-month tour, frontman Scott Stapp was so calm, you’d think the hotly anticipated trek was a victory lap. But he knows they have a lot of work to do if they’re going to compete for their share of rock fans from the Nickelback-Daughtry nation that’s sprung up in their absence. “Right now, we have feel like we have a second chance to make a first impression as artists,” said Stapp, who’s weathered addiction and assorted trials since the band spl

Mariah Carey, Snoop, Fergie Perform on Star-Packed “Idol Gives Back” American Idol’s second annual anti-poverty charity drive Idol Gives Back was a night for huge voices (Mariah Carey, Carrie Underwood), big emotions (a weepy Annie Lennox, a generous Simon Cowell) and sizeable mistakes (Terry Hatcher singing Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” Ryan Seacrest inexplicably shuffling offstage along with the So You Think You Can Dance? stars). And don’t forget about the big corporate sponsors — Idol certainly didn’t. The night began with the season seven contestants singing Rihanna’s “Don’t Stop the Music” and continued with Snoop Dogg performing “Can’t Say Goodbye” with help from Charlie Wilson and a pack of kids who play in his youth-football league. Miley Cyrus took the stage twice, and Fergie sang once with John Legend and again with Heart, punctuating her contributions to the latter by writhing around the stage in leather pants and doing two one-handed cartwheels (alas, Heart devotee Carly Smithson didn’t get to join in the fun). After appearing in a moving pre-taped segment filmed in Africa, Annie Lennox played Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross,” and Underwood sang George Michael’s “Praying for Time.” Sheila E. (another alum of an Idol-affiliated show, The Next Great American Band) joined Gloria Estefan for “Get on Your Feet,” and the Idol contestants returned to harmonize on “Seasons of Love” from the musical Rent. Brad Pitt introduced Daughtry’s appearance, and the night ended with Randy Jackson backing Mariah Carey on bass for “Fly Like a Bird.” Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Billy Crystal and Robin Williams attempted to lighten the mood, but it was hard to contend with the extremely serious tone of the show’s documentary segments, which featured Bono, Daughtry and Alicia Keys in Africa, Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus in rural Kentucky, Paula Abdul and Randy Jacks

R. Kelly Sex Tape Will Be Shown During Trial, Another James Brown Child Identified, R.E.M. To Release Live CD/DVD The judge overseeing R. Kelly’s child pornography trial has confirmed the public will be allowed to see the controversial videotape that allegedly shows the singer having sex with — and urinating on — a minor because the girl in question denies she is the girl who appears on the tape (as does Kelly). The judge said he’d consider overturning his decision if the prosecution calls the girl as a witness. Kelly’s trial begins September 17th, almost five years and twenty-two chapters of “Trapped in the Closet” after he was first slapped with child pornography charges. Ongoing DNA tests following James Brown’s death have revealed the late singer has another child; three weeks ago two more of his children were identified. My Chemical Romance, All-American Rejects, Daughtry, Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson have been announced as opening acts for Bon Jovi’s ten-date residency in New Jersey this fall. Dates for the shows, which will inaugurate the new Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, after the jump. As various digital music services experiment with DRM-free releases to compete with iTunes, Black Eyed Peas‘ will.i.am has decided to jump into the fray. He’ll launch a digital music store on August 28th on his Web site to coincide with the release of single “I Got it From My Mama” to sell his own copyright-protection-free tracks. R.E.M. will release a live CD/DVD titled R.E.M. Live CD/DVD on October 16th, which will feature their performance at Dublin’s Point Theatre on February 27, 2005, two years before the band returned to the city to test-drive songs for a still-forthcoming album. Click here to see the DVD’s trailer, and get the tracklisting after the jump. Chris Daughtry Feels the Heat for Comments on “American Idol” “Decline” As you may have read Monday, Chris Daughtry described American Idol as in a state of “decline” on RollingStone.com. Since then, a producer for the show told Rolling Stone Daughtry called to apologize and said that he was “misquoted or taken out of context.” We think Daughtry is a great guy and understand that he put himself in a tough position, but we also need to set the record straight. Here’s the interview transcript and audio from our phone conversation. ROLLING STONE: Are you gonna watch it next season, or do you even care anymore? I mean— CHRIS DAUGHTRY: You know, it’s kinda hard, to be honest with you. ROLLING STONE: Yeah, I can imagine. CHRIS DAUGHTRY: It’s gotten to a point now where it just kind of like—I don’t know. I don’t know how many people actually take it serious. And in return you have a hard time having an audience that takes it serious— ROLLING STONE: Right. CHRIS DAUGHTRY: —you know what I mean? So, you know, this—I feel like they’re gonna have to do a lot to really, you know, change the way it’s—or otherwise, I think it’s gonna end up, you know, running its course, because, you know, I think that people get tired of seeing the people that suck. It’s funny at first, but come on. You know, you spend like two whole—two or three weeks on people that can’t sing, and that’s what they’re banking it on. It’s like come on, find some people that you can really invest in. ROLLING STONE: Right. CHRIS DAUGHTRY: And even better, why don’t you give them a time to perform some of their own songs if they’re able to play an instrument? If not, you know, work it out with the band, and, you know, let’s see what kind of artists they really are, you know what I’m saying? And I think some stuff like that—people would end up taking it more serious, you know, as an audience because despite what it’s done, so many people are like—you know, there’s that stigma of like oh, it comes from

Despite Police Tour, Concerts, Like CDs, Experience 2007 Decline Like much of the music industry, North American ticket sales suffered a drop this year, as the top twenty tours of 2007 generated only $996 million, the worst numbers since 2004. Despite the Police reunion tour — the year’s top-earner with $131 million, which makes it the fourth highest-grossing in history — totals still were down 15.6 percent from last year’s gross. Kenny Chesney and Justin Timberlake tours made $71.1 and $70.6 million, respectively, to take second and third place. While four acts sold more than one million concert tickets in ‘06, only the Police and Chesney surpassed that total in 2007. The concert circuit was no doubt hurt by the Hannah Montana Ticketmaster scandal, as well as the fact that the top six best-selling albums of 2007 were all released in 2006, which affected promotional tours. Perennial chart toppers the Rolling Stones also took a year off to tour Europe. Fingers are being pointed at the Dave Matthews Band and Bruce Springsteen, who both set out on fan-friendly tours that saw them price tickets at lower average prices. Still, the numbers would have been better if the number five tour, the Van Halen jaunt with David Lee Roth back at the mike, had started at its original kick-off point in the summer of 2007. Because of its late start (due to Eddie Van Halen’s rehab stint), the majority of its shows will bleed over into 2008. With Van Halen still getting along a mere five days ’til New Year’s, and a possible Led Zeppelin tour on the horizon, 2008 looks to be a stronger year for the concert biz. Red Hot Chili Peppers Vs. David Duchovny; Jimmy Page “Just a Bit Bruised”; More Bruce Springsteen Tour Dates The Red Hot Chili Peppers have filed suit against Showtime’s Californication, claiming the show – which stars and is co-produced by David Duchovny – stole from the band’s 1999 album by the same name. The Chili Peppers have demanded that the show stop using the name and to give the band any profits made while using it. “Californication is the signature CD, video and song of the band’s career,” frontman Anthony Kiedis said in a statement. “For some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right.” Jimmy Page says his broken pinky finger is healing nicely and is confident Led Zeppelin’s reunion performance will go off as planned on December 10th after being rescheduled following his incident. “I’m able to do what I ought to be able to do,” he told Reuters. “It’s just a bit bruised and a it’s bit painful still, but with this two weeks’ postponement. . .it’s going to be fine.” John Mayer’s blogging continues with a defense of today’s pop music in the form of his five favorite songs of the moment — “They’re great,” Mayer writes. “Not ‘actually’ great, as in ‘I expected them to suck and I”m reluctantly giving it up,’ great. Just stand-out pop music of today.” — which include pop-punker Paramore’s “Misery Business,” Justin Timberlake’s “Lovestoned/I Think She Knows” Interlude, Jordin Sparks’ “Tattoo,” Sara Bareilles’ “Love Song” and Daughtry’s “Over You.” Dr. Jan Adams, the plastic surgeon who operated on Kanye West’s mother, suggests Dr. Donda West may have died of an overdose of the vicodin he prescribed to her in an interview with the L.A. Times. Adams maintains there was nothing wrong with Donda when she left his office following a November 9th appointment for a breast reduction, tummy tuck an

“American Idol” Adding Guitar Strumming, Subtracting Mentors With this season’s American Idol currently taping the “Hollywood stage,” when the throng of contestants who are “going to Hollywood” gets slashed down to twelve guys and twelve girls, AI producer Nigel Lythgoe is opening up about some of the changes the show is undergoing in its seventh season. The biggest shift, one that would have benefitted Idol losers like Blake Lewis, Bo Bice and Chris Daughtry, is that contestants will be now allowed to show off their instrumental talents as part of the Hollywood portion. Lythgoe, who is also hard at work on Idol spawn The Next Great American Band, is unsure whether that aspect will carry over into voting weeks. This season will also feature fewer celebrity mentors, as having the contestants share the spotlight every week last year likely contributed to slightly lower ratings. Lythgoe tells the New York Post, “We got such good mentors [last season] that we forgot about … getting across who these kids were, their backgrounds and families. There are legends in our business that hopefully will come along as mentors on Idol this season — but not every single week.” There goes any hope of a possible Shalamar mentorship. The last potential change is the possible joint tour of Fox darlings American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. “I’d love to see the Dance tour go out with the Idol tour and put the singing and dancing together,” Lythgoe says. There’s a lot of time between then and now however, and millions of votes to tabulate, as American Idol’s seventh season is set to premiere in January. Rock Reality Show Recap: Crappy Groups Galore Grace the Premiere of “The Next Great American Band” The producers of American Idol think they can find The Next Great American Band on TV (and no, they’re not talking about the next great Grand Funk Railroad). We think we can find some pleasure in this pursuit with our Rock Reality Show Recaps. Here’s our first report: Two Great American Reality Hours in Three Sentences: The producers of American Idol scoured the nation for sixty bands, drove them to a stage in “the heart of the desert” and, unfortunately, did not do the world a great service by leaving them all there. We met our judges who already fit the Idol mold perfectly: the prickly veteran (Aussie Idol judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson), the overly nice diplomat (Sheila E., doing a perfect Paula) and someone to break their ties (Goo Goo Doll John Rzeznick). Twelve bands were chosen, but just one will emerge victorious … and dozens of others will have already sacrificed their dignity for a few extra MySpace hits. Best Next Great American Bands Bands: Of the twelve finalists chosen, most of them are glorified local bands who somehow convinced three judges and a team of producers they have potential: lame Maroon 5 clones (the Hatch), way-sloppy girl punks (Rocket), something with a lot of eyeliner and leaping (Dot Dot Dot), and a twelve-piece big band that doesn’t realize the swing-revival revival is still like fifteen years off (Denver and the Mile High Orchestra). Only two bands are truly worth putting a sawbuck in the office pool: Philly heavy-soul crew Franklin Bridge who have an air-tight mix of funk, rock and chops; and Nashville’s Sixwire, whose Sawyer-Brown-meets-Big-And-Rich-style blend of country, rock and fast-rap will probably go the Daughtry route and sell bazillions no matter if they win or not. (Advantage: They were signed to Warner Bros. in 2002 and are now the veteran also-rans competing in a contest of amateurs and future also-rans) Saddest Great American Moment: The entire episode worked on the premise t
