blondie vs. sam sparro - mashup!

† FROM DJ PAUL V. This week's mashup is so smooth and spectacular, it glistens. It has everything to do with one of my favorite new singers, Sam Sparro. The handsome ex-Aussie - and now Angeleno - dropped, hands-down, one of the most sublime and gorgeous (and totally underrated) songs of last year. His 'Black & Gold' single was pure atmosphere, emotion, and electronic-soul wrapped around his velvet voice (so yeah, go find the original, too). As the music here, it's the centerpiece, but it's the also-beloved Blondie 'Call Me' vocal, transformed from downtown disco into blissful beauty here, that sparkles. good morning! i was so excited when i discovered this week's mashup selection from DJ paul v. involved one of my favorite up & coming singers duffy (who i just posted about the other day) i'd love to see her make it big here in the states - her hit single mercy is starting to get some good buzz on and next month duffy's incredible debut album rockferry will be released in the US on may 13th - she's just getting started - please keep your eyes on her! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo! † FROM DJ PAUL V.This week we showcase some white folks who have lots of soul. The first were the boys from the 70's, The Doobie Brothers. 'Long Train Running' is a funky classic rock hit for sure, and on the other end of the spectrum is UK newcomer Duffy (who I adore!) She's already blowing up in England and just now seeing her buzz hit the states in a big way. Her 'Mercy' is a fabulous slice of retro boogaloo. This mashup was made by newcomer DJY Alias JY, who took the excellent Duffy remix by Dunproofin (which you should get too) and gets the locomotion chugging by mashing in the Doobies. duffy releases 'rockferry' in the US!

oh my gosh - today is duffy's big day here in the states - her incredible debut album rockferry is officially on sale here in the US! (just last week i picked up a vinyl copy of the album - although i don't have a record player - i'm addicted to collecting vinyl - especially 45s) i first posted about the welsh soul singer back at the end of january upon discovery of her kick-ass single mercy - and it has been popping up in all sorts of places (the hills, women's murder club) duffy was celebrating her stateside release today at the times square virgin megastore where she signed copies of her album and also performed! i can't wait until she finally does her first los angeles show - i'd like to vote for the roxy to be her first LA venue - hands down the best small venue in town! popbytes over & out for tonight - long live duffy - xxoo PHOTOS | WENN

la vie en rose - a must see!

good evening! last week i was so lucky to attend an advanced screening of la vie en rose - a new biopic about famed french singer edith piaf (1915 - 1963) at one point the legendary marlene dietrich told edith her voice was 'the soul of paris' and she was right! i'll be 100% honest that i didn't know all that much about her but now i'm totally obsessed! (she was like the french judy garland but even better!) she had such an interesting but super sad & tragic life from the start (you must read her bio) being passed around when she was a kid - living off the streets - singing for money until one day she was discovered and initially was nicknamed 'the little sparrow' (piaf is french slang for small bird) poor thing also lost the great love of her life (who was married) to a plane crash - plus she was in a car accident which led to her crippling addiction to morphine but gosh she was a trooper right up to the end - a real character that no one even comes close to today - they certainly don't make stars like they used too! (she was even involved in the french resistance - girlfriend was way cool!) the film was excellent - a beautifully told story directed by olivier dahan - which jumps around to different points in edith's life giving us glimpses & insights into her incredible story - this is not your typical biopic - by the end i was ready to jump out of my seat - i was blown away - even having a mini emotional breakdown in my car when i left the theater - her whole story moved me so much - everyone know popbytes loves the messy ones! (you must watch this video of the 'real' edith singing 'non je ne regrette rien' aka 'no regrets') the actress who plays ms. piaf marion cotillard was mesmerizing & astonishing - oh my word! if she doesn't at least get nominated for an oscar i would be shocked! i couldn't keep my eyes off her - she nailed the part - it was almost eerie! of course no one could sing the vocals (if attempted that would've been a travesty!) original piaf tra
