Weekend Rock List: ’80s Hard Rock SinglesPhoto: Micelotta/Getty In honor of that big Def Leppard and Poison tour that’s coming to your town this summer, this weekend’s Rock List was dedicated to 1980s Hard Rock Songs. We counted the votes, and the song that most made our readers want to apply copious amount of hairspray was Ozzy Osbourne’s tribute to deranged transportation, “Crazy Train.” Where did songs by Metallica, Ratt and the Dead Kennedys land? Check out the readers’ list below: 1. Ozzy Osbourne – “Crazy Train” 2. Guns n’ Roses – “Paradise City” 3. Metallica – “One” 4. The Replacements – “Bastards of Young” 5. Cinderella – “Shake Me” 6. Van Halen – “Hot For Teacher” 7. Living Colour – “Cult of Personality” 8. Motley Crue – “Too Young to Fall in Love” 9. AC/DC – “Back In Black” 10. Skid Row – “Youth Gone Wild” 11. Top 5 Band Logos Missing From The 25 "Best Band Logos" [Pointless Logophilia]Ah, nothing quite fills a slow-ass holiday Monday better than list gripery. At first, as I read this rundown of the 25 "Best Band Logos," all I could think was "they better remember the Misfits...

Alternate Takes: VMAs Are DOA Since details about VMA-night fights are still coming to light, Rock Daily isn’t quite done with the Vegas fiasco we covered exhaustively earlier this month. Here’s Joe Levy’s take: It’s hard to say exactly which was a stranger moment at the MTV Video Music Awards: a short shot of the Foo Fighters with Serj Tankian on vocals flailing away at the Dead Kennedys’ “Holiday in Cambodia” — a twenty-seven-year-old snotty punk put-down of American consumerism — or Justin Timberlake chastising MTV for the second time in one night for not playing enough videos by declaiming that we don’t need more “Simpsonson reality television.” Both said plenty about how strained, odd and useless the VMAs have become: The attacks now come from within. Was it a good idea to stage the show in a Vegas hotel and run the red carpet through the casino, a place Lord knows how many MTV viewers (to say nothing of underage performers like Chris Brown and Rihanna) aren’t legally allowed to enter? What about shrifting off the most interesting performers — Kanye West, Timberlake, the Foos and Fall Out Boy (who, whatever you think of them, at least swung for the fences like they believed the occasion was important and tuning their guitars wasn’t) — to “fantasy suites,” cutting to them for only a minute or so at times as bumpers before commercials? And who let Alicia Keys onstage wearing Gene Simmons’ boots, Diana Ross’ leggings and Jimi Hendrix’s headband? If you have to ask any of these questions, you have no business watching MTV — ratings for the VMAs were up twenty-three percent this year (due, no doubt, to the Britney Spears show opener). To be fair, MTV has been held to an unreasonable standard from the moment it started twenty-six years ago, when people bitched about the sacrilege of impoverishing our imaginations by putting pictures to music. Now, of course, the complaint is that it no longer p

‘The New Republic’ Tries to Read Caroline Kennedy’s MindPhoto: Getty Images It's obvious what Caroline Kennedy's endorsement has done for the Obama campaign, Michelle Cottle writes in the coming issue of The New Republic. But what is the Obama campaign doing for Caroline Kennedy? Cottle thinks she knows: It's been 45 years since the fall of Camelot, and the family brand has begun to fade. A growing portion of the electorate was born after the deaths of John and Bobby and has a tough time relating to the Kennedy fixation of its elders. Under such conditions, what's a committed custodian of the family legacy to do? Hitch her clan's wagon to the hottest political star in decades. With a little luck, even as that old Camelot magic rubs off on Obama, the candidate's energy and relevance will help sustain the Kennedy brand for a little longer. Oh, Michelle, so cynical. The TNR writer says that she doesn't mean "to suggest that Kennedy Schlossberg has no identity beyond that of Kennedy custodian," but that's essentially what she does in her story, "External Flame." "In a lifetime of looking out for the Kennedy name, attaching herself to Obama could turn out to be her most important endeavor yet — allowing her to bolster the family brand in the minds of young voters and thus secure it a role in the party's future," Cottle writes. "Because, if Barack Obama is crazy for the Kennedys, they must really be something special, right?" Hm. The Camelot political legacy has faded out? Caroline is the only custodian of her family legacy? Guess we'll have to add Michelle Cottle's name to the list of journalists who think Ted Kennedy is already dead. External Flame [New Republic]

Michael Savage Dedicates Dead Kennedys Song To Ted Kennedy, Who Has A Brain TumorIn terms of classiness, right-wing shock radio personalities elevate the concept to extraordinary heights on a daily basis. It's just what they do. So hats off to Michael Savage for his HI-LARIOUS coverage of Senator Ted Kennedy's malignant brain tumor, which consisted of mocking brain cancer-sufferers then "showing some respect" by playing a song by the Dead Kennedys, which just has so many layers of hilarity since, you know, Ted's two brothers were tragically murdered far before their time. Here's what Savage had to say to set-up the song:"The poor guy's been suffering for years, you know? Unfairly he's been accused of alcoholism, but we see now that it was something much more deep-seated. And so, to cut this out in some respect for Ted Kennedy, here's a tune coming at you from the Dead Kennedys. Go ahead and play it, please."Please click on the button below. You stay classy, Michael Savage! Full audio of the incident after the jump...

My 10 Favorite Albums That I Never Listen To AnymoreAlright, it's confession time, people. The following is a very frank and painful list of a very specific type of album -- those albums you have always loved and will always love, and yet, despite owning the album on cd, on your computer, and on your iPod (or your Zune, if you're the CEO of Zune), you just never listen to them. This is my own personal list of cds that fall into this dubious category, as well as my best attempt to make sense of this unique, baffling, but nonetheless inevitable phenomenon. Albums are ordered from 10 to 1 based on a combined "How much I love the album" multiplied by a factor of "How surprised am I that I never really listen to it anymore." Here goes: 10. Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction I'll still name drop this sucker in a discussion of all-time best debut albums (right after They're All Gonna Laugh At You, of course), and the credit it receives for ending hair metal as a means of viable unironic entertainment is well-deserved, but I'll always personally remember Appetite as the tape that my brother used to slip me behind my mother's back that had F-words on it. How is it, then, that I never even thought to upload this seminal, nostalgic favorite to my most recent iPod? I blame sh*tty karaoke. 9. Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables Ahh, the Dead Kennedys. Another band whose discovery made me again reassured that I was right and that everyone who was listening to everything else was wrong and a douchebag. The Kennedys are great for a laugh, their satire still holds up today, and their super-fast and crazy style more than separates their legacy from the rest of the crowded 80s punk field. You know what I've found they're not so great for, though? Blasting in your car in the year 2008. 8. Pink Floyd - Animals The Pink Floyd Progression: Discover Dark Side of the Moon. Discover The Wall. Listen to both constantly and talk about how great they are. Discover Wish You Were Here. Constantly talk about how much better
