Remembering Elliott Smith On His Thirty-Eighth BirthdayToday would have been Elliott Smith’s thirty-eighth birthday. To honor the singer-songwriter, Kill Rock Stars is giving away downloads of “Angel in the Snow,” the first track from this year’s New Moon, which includes songs Smith recorded from 1994 to 1997. We suggest checking out some old photos of Smith and remembering his many accomplishments. As of today, the investigation into his 2003 death remains open. Photographer/video director Autumn de Wilde’s Smith book (which includes a forward written by Beck and Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla) is due September 20. Photo: Super/Retna

Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel EngagedDeath Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and She & Him singer-actress Zooey Deschanel are engaged, a source close to the couple tells Us. The couple are “so thrilled,” the source says, “Zooey was swept off her feet, and Ben is so excited.” To be honest, we didn’t even know Zooey and Ben were an item, and apparently neither did the rest of the media: The announcement came just hours after a false report saying Deschanel was engaged to AFI bassist Hunter Burgan, who immediately denied the reports. In the end, it was revealed it was Gibbard and not Burgan who is engaged to the Elf actress. According to some Websites, the couple have been dating for almost a year. In the past, Deschanel has dated artists like actor-drummer-Coconut Records dude Jason Schwartzman and Maroon 5’s Mickey Madden, but it was Gibbard that ultimately, in the words of Beyoncé’s Best Single of ‘08, put a ring on it. While they managed to keep their relationship out of the spotlight, Gibbard and Deschanel have shared the stage on at least one occasion, performing the Everly Brothers’ “All I Have To Do Is Dream” at an Obama fundraiser in August. News Ticker: Bob Dylan, R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen, Neil Aspinall Bob Dylan became the first rock musician to win a Pulitzer Prize when he was given an honorary award yesterday for his “profound impact on popular music and American culture.” In honor of Record Store Day, the upcoming celebration of independent music stores, R.E.M., Death Cab for Cutie, the Black Keys and Built to Spill will each release limited edition 7″ singles featuring previously unreleased material. Tom Morello joined Bruce Springsteen on stage last night in Anaheim to play “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” which Morello has previously covered. Watch the video after the jump. Though Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr were unable to attend the funeral of “fifth Beatle” Neil Aspinall in London yesterday, McCartney’s daughter and Starr’s wife, along with Pete Townshend, Yoko Ono and Beatles producer George Martin were present in memoriam. April Fool’s Ticker: The Day in Gags The programmers over at YouTube took advantage of the “Rick Rolling” meme (where links are redirected to Rick Astley’s video for the cheesey Eighties hit “Never Gonna Give You Up”) by throwing the curveball on each of their “Featured Videos” today. Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard announced the formation of a side project called Just Jazzin’. According to its MySpace page, the fake group involves Gibbard randomly hitting a vibraphone. Several radio DJs in New Zealand announced that Foo Fighters would play a free acoustic show at their station. They expected only a handful of people to show up (the plan was to walk on stage and play some Foos tunes on a boom box), but the joke went awry when thousands of fans skipped work and descended on the station’s headquarters expecting a show. In an extremely English prank, NME reported that Amy Winehouse would star in an upcoming episode of BBC favorite Dr. Who. And just in case you were wondering, that story about Weezer’s album title is absolutely true. [Photo: Putland/Retna]
