Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum proclaimed Metallica’s anticipated next album “bitchin’.” Devo had a few words for Korn, the other band spouting a theory of deevolution these days. These words included “cretinous” and “smackdown.” Rock Daily explored the concept of selling out, but in a good way. The British named their ideal supergroup. Then everyone else picked that supergroup to pieces and built cooler ones. After teasing you a bit, Rolling Stone revealed that Guns N’ Roses graces the cover of the new issue.

Devo Sue McDonald’s Over Happy Meal Toy Devo are suing McDonald’s after the hamburger giant used the band’s likeness in a Happy Meal toy without permission. Last April, McDonald’s released a bunch of American Idol-themed toys that had little plastic figures dressed up to represent different musical genres. There was Disco Dave, Rockin’ Riley and, the basis of Devo’s lawsuit, New Wave Nigel. Anyone who’s seen Devo’s “Whip It” video will automatically recognize those odd red caps, dubbed “energy domes” by the band, as the same hat that adorns New Wave Nigel’s head. Little did McDonald’s know, however, that the “energy dome” is “copyrighted and trademarked,” according to Devo bassist and creator of the “energy dome” Gerald Casale. According to Casale, “We’re in the midst of suing them… they didn’t ask us anything. Plus, we don’t like McDonald’s, and we don’t like American Idol, so we’re doubly offended.” Making matter worse, New Wave Nigel also dons an orange jumpsuit and sunglasses strikingly similar to the band’s wardrobe at the time, and the plastic figure even has a song that the band claims sounds Devo-esque. Tool’s Maynard James Keenan Reveals Puscifer Album Title In July, Rock Daily told you about Tool leader Maynard James Keenan’s enigmatic new side project, which until recently has been shrouded in mystery. And, frankly, we’re still a bit confused: “I’m on a mission,” he says. “I’ve been assigned to be the guardian of a highly classified, highly effective Sonic Weapon of Mass Disruption. This sonic technology when ‘unleashed,’ if you will, causes parts of the anatomy to vibrate uncontrollably. … Their bodies will appear to be abducted by the Soul Train, as if J.Lo were auditioning for the ‘Thriller’ video.” Has he seen the dancing Filipino prisoners yet? At any rate, the Jonny Polonsky/Lisa Germano/Micah/Devo/Milla Jovovich-involved Puscifer will release its debut album on Puscifer Entertainment October 30. The record’s name: V Is for Vagina.

“Our Hats Are Off to Devo”: Korn’s Jonathan Davis Responds to De-Evolution Dust-Up When Devo’s Jerry Casale complained to Rock Daily about Korn borrowing his band’s “de-evolution” concept for a fake film trailer called Devolution: Nature’s U-Turn, the new-wave pioneer said he wouldn’t hold his breath for due credit. Well, we’re happy to report that Korn frontman Jonathan Davis has proven Casale wrong. “Korn never claimed to be the first to expose De-Evolution, our hats are off to Devo for that,” he said in a statement to Rolling Stone one day before his band is slated to perform a free show at New York’s South Street Seaport and hold court at a press conference at Times Square’s Armed Forces Recruiting Station. “They are pioneers for sure! However, we are glad to see that our efforts have them speaking up again! It’s good to have them back. They are needed in the fight!! In the meantime our researchers continue to uncover key evidence of De-Evolution at the highest levels (www.evolutiondevolution.com).” Photo: Etheridge-Barnes/Getty

Best Rock Sell-Outs Ever! Yesterday, Tom Waits inspired us to make a list of the most upsetting misuses of great rock songs in TV commercials. Today, thanks to this actually-pretty-cool new Dell ad featuring “Work It,” the first new song from Devo in seventeen years, we’re at least open to the idea that sometimes rock and blatant product pushing can go hand in hand. So here’s a new list, comprised of strangely appealing examples of songs being used in TV spots. What would you add? The 2000 VW Cabrio ad with Nick Drake’s “Pink Moon” The 2003 iPod ad with Jet’s “Are You Gonna Be My Girl?” (can anybody remember the actual video for that song?) Cat Power’s 2006 cover of Cat Stevens’ “How Can I Tell You” in a DeBeers ad Victoria’s Secret’s weirdly awesome use of Dylan’s “Love Sick” The Gap ad with Badly Drawn Boy’s “The Shining”
