Slash Says Actual Rock Stardom Interferes With Fake Rock Stardom Shockingly, the ability to rock doesn’t necessarily translate to rocking Guitar Hero. First we watched comedian David Cross beat Dinosaur Jr. god J Mascis at the game, and now comes news that Rolling Stone cover star Slash has spoken out about his problems adapting his sick guitar skills. “I’m not great at it,” the Guitar Hero III star admitted. “And a lot of that has to do with the fact that it’s hard for me to get rid of thirty years — whatever it is — twenty-some-odd years of playing in a certain way and then all of the sudden become accustomed to pressing some buttons and stuff. I have these little things that I’m so used to doing that when I’m playing Guitar Hero it sort of screws me up.” And if you thought Rock Band, the game going head-to-head with Guitar Hero III when they both hit stores in the fall, sounded good before, here’s even more info: Nirvana’s Nevermind will be fully downloadable and playable on the game after it’s released. And Guitar Legend, a sort of Guitar Hero title for mobile phones, will feature the band’s “Heart Shaped Box.” Photo: Getty

“Guitar Hero: World Tour” Unveils Full Track ListPhoto:Activision Guitar Hero: World Tour has finally released its full track list. While the list of 86 tracks isn’t as jaw-dropping as that of its counterpart Rock Band 2, there are a bunch of highlights, including a pair of tracks by Jimi Hendrix and Ozzy Osbourne, plus cuts from Metallica, Nirvana, Van Halen, the Doors and Lynyrd Skynyrd. All the songs are original master recordings. There’s karaoke favorites like the Eagles‘ “Hotel California” and, for the true axmen, virtuoso songs like Joe Satriani’s “Satch Boogie.” Additionally, the game will boast exclusive Guitar Duel recordings by Ted Nugent and Zakk Wylde. There’s also a trio of new play options: Band Career, the Music Studio feature and the 8-player Battle of the Bands that allow bands to compete online. GH:WT also has those new instruments, new amps and that exclusive Smashing Pumpkins premiere single “G.L.O.W.” The game hits shelves October 26th. Dinosaur Jr. Makes a Monstrous Noise in NYC Back from extinction with their original lineup, post-punk power trio Dinosaur Jr. flooded New York’s Irving Plaza with a wall of sound last night. Fans who only dreamed that the band’s brief 2005 tour would lead to something bigger and better have been vindicated with the release of a new disc, Beyond, and what appears to be a full-fledged reunion. After a short set from Brooklyn garage rock trio Awesome Color, images of dinosaurs and three-headed monsters filled a large screen in front of the stage. Then guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph proceeded to their placed onstage to play a mix of tunes from Dinosaur, You’re Living All Over Me, Bug and Beyond, along with one post-Barlow hit, “Feel the Pain,” from Without a Sound. Barlow was dressed in black per usual while Mascis, a former brunette, stood out with a flowing white mane that glistened in the multi-colored lights. J’s lack of hair color and Murph’s lack of hair were the only evidence the band had aged as they played to a packed house of thirty-somethings and teenage skate rats who nearly created a mosh pit during “Freak Scene.” Stacks of Marshall amps came alive on the 1987 classic “Little Fury Things” and recent rocker “Pick Me Up” shimmered as Mascis’s lackadaisical voice offset the mammoth sound of his Hendrix-esque guitar solos, fuzzy bass lines and frantic drumming. Barlow took his turn on a handful of songs, channeling Neil Young on “Back to Your Heart,” and sharing vocals with J on “Forget the Swan” from their 1985 debut. Mascis was as awkward and quiet as ever between songs, with the exception of a mumbled “Thanks a lot for coming.” Luckily the tight-lipped singer is capable of conveying emotion in his music, as he did during “Sludgefeast.” Singing the lyrics “I’m waiting/Please come back/I’ve got the guts now/To meet your eyes,” he ripped into jaw-dropping riffs that recalled everything from Sabbath and Sonic Youth to Motorhead. After an hour and a half, the show e

LISTEN UP: iPhone Might Be Too Cool to Hang Out With MeApple's iPhone apparently has some good taste in music, sporting the likes of Beck, Lily Allen, Feist, and Nine Inch Nails, among others, in its newest commercial. I wonder if it'll also have my iPod's bizarre sense of humor and go out of its way to play the same three Dinosaur Jr. songs every time I put it on shuffle. (Music For Kids Who Don't Read Good) Extrawack! has an interview with Vince DiFiore, the trumpet player from Cake, along with an mp3 of the band covering Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Next up on their series of exclusive interviews: the dude from Mighty Mighty Bosstones who only dances. The weather forecast for the East Coast is looking awfully Nico-ey for the next couple days. Prepare your tunes accordingly. (Art Decade) I think listening to The Pipettes and Smoosh back to back might be intensely sugary enough to actually give someone diabetes. In a good way, of course. (Information Leafblower) Finally, Pittsburgh's own Gregg Gillis - aka Girl Talk - throws down this ridiculous remix of a Tokyo Police Club song. I haven't been this proud of a band from my hometown since Rusted Root did that Peter Bjorn & John remix. Man, now I'm kind of wishing that were real. (I Guess I'm Floating)
