Flo Rida’s “Right Round” Shatters Digital Singles Record With a Little Help From an ’80s HookPhoto: Ritchie/WireImage Almost after a year since his “Low” dominated the Singles chart for 10 consecutive weeks, Flo Rida has found himself back on top, and in record-breaking fashion with “Right Round.” In its debut week, “Right Round” was downloaded about 636,000 times according to Billboard.biz, shattering the record Flo Rida himself set in January 2008 when “Low” was purchased 467,000 times in an extended, post-Christmas week. The seven-day record for most downloads was incidentally set last week, when Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent’s “Crack a Bottle” was purchased 418,000 times. Flo Rida made sure that record was short lived. “Right Round” is the first single off Flo’s second album R.O.O.T.S., due out April 7th. As Coolfer points out, if those 636,000 single downloads are the equivalent of roughly 63,600 copies in album sales, then Flo Rida would have sold enough this week to place eighth on this week’s albums chart, ahead of the resurgent Viva La Vida. Of course, Flo Rida’s “Right Round” came with a built-in hook that almost guaranteed its success, using a sample of ’80s new wavers Dead Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record),” a song that was popular in its own era but had a late-’90s resurgence thanks to The Wedding Singer. Rihanna similarly has constructed a whole oeuvre of turning new wave and ’80s samples into Top 40 gold: “Don’t Stop The Music” borrows from Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “SOS” borrows from Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” and Rihanna’s “Shut Up and Drive” is a fuzzed-out version of New Order’s “Blue Monday.” Similarly, Kid Rock fused Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” to form “All Summer Long,” one of the biggest hits of 2008. Consumers evidently are continually willing to shell out money for decades-old hits being reappropriated by contemporary artists, as the success of Flo Rida’s “Right Round” well demonstrates.

Rock Reality Show Recap: Ja Rule Builds a Hit While Irv’s Marriage Crumbles on “Gotti’s Way” Gotti’s Way tracks Murder Inc. mogul Irv Gotti’s attempts to rebuild his empire and fix his broken home, while our Rock Reality Show Recaps track how many times he breaks out Ja Rule in each episode. Here’s our sixth report: Thirty Minutes in Four Sentences: Irv and Deb have officially made Heidi and Spencer look compatible. After using their daughter’s fashion show as battlegrounds for their nastiest feud yet, Deb begins to consider the “d” word to save herself from a lifetime of misery. In music news, Irv has teamed up with (who else) Ja Rule to record what sounds like the first decent song of the season with a rhyme that preaches that “nobody’s” got “your body.” Now what in the world will he rhyme that with? Does Ja Rule Gotti’s Life?: With an iron fist. After listening to Gotti’s beat for about five minutes, Ja flies out of his seat and begins freestyling around the studio. In two minutes, they’ve got a track. “I got (the hook),” he shouts, repeating a pretty catchy chorus. Gotti is so excited at this point that he begins to physically shake the pint-sized rapper. Irv’s Industry Advice: Gotti uses last night’s episode to explain why the prospect of a hit song means so much to him. “The single is a precious thing cause that’s where we get our money,” he says. Wait. So he’s not in it for the music? Broken Home: Advice: When you find yourself cursing your partner in the middle of your daughter’s first modeling show (because her face is too “stoic” says Irv, he of the consistently cheesy grin), get the hell out. “You fucking idiot!” Deb fires at Gotti, defending her runway coaching. “All you know how to do is make beats. Go make beats.” The constant fighting leads Deb to consider an official divorce, but not without a fight from her children. “I want dad to be in my life forever,” middle child Sonny sobs as a Vanessa Carlton tune warbles in the background. Seriously, is Dr. Phil watching this show? [Photo: Getty]

Guest Appearances: Rosie O'Donnell To Continue To Explore Her Sensual Side On 'Nip/Tuck'So popular was Rosie O'Donnell's guest starring stint on Nip/Tuck--which included an infamous sex scene on a zebra-skin rug that inspired a great many viewers to blind themselves on the nearest coffee-table corner and/or coat hook--that the prospect of a fifth season of the FX drama without O'Donnell's character seemed unthinkable. Rest easy, Dawn Budge fans--more naked Rosie awaits:"Nip/Tuck" creator/executive producer Ryan Murphy said that O'Donnell will be returning for "several episodes" of the show's upcoming fifth season, starting with Episode 4. As for talk about a potential spinoff featuring her character, Dawn Budge, Murphy said, "The character was so instantly popular. We've spoken about (a spinoff); it's an ongoing discussion." Having already tasted the forbidden fruits of resident slutty surgeon Dr. Christian Troy, we imagine the writers have begun to brainstorm a whole new selection of partners, sexual positions, and animal hides on which to perfect them. Whether or not her horny escapades could sustain a spinoff series remains to be seen--but having just watched her Price is Right dreams evaporate, we can think of no better consolation prize than to portray a woman addicted to lipo and gigolos in The Days and Nights of Dawn Budge. O'Donnell signs on for more 'Nip/Tuck' [cnn.com]
