Weekend Rock List: Jam BandsPhoto: Slevert/Michael Ochs Archive/ Getty For jam band fans, the past seven days were probably the best week since Phish played that Lemonwheel festival back in 1998: Trey Anastasio and gang, the Dead and the Allman Brothers all announced plans to tour in ‘09. To honor all of the proprietors of 30-minute songs, this week’s rock list is dedicated Jam Bands, those wonderful artists that give us a reason to quit our jobs, stop showering and caravan around in worship. If they jam, they count (thus, Sonic Youth qualifies — we’ll expect to see plenty of Disco Biscuits and moe. in the votes, too) So tell us your picks, and on Monday we’ll bust out Europe ‘72 while we count the votes. Until then, good luck in the Phish ticket lottery and check out our picks: • The Grateful Dead • The Allman Brothers • Phish • Sonic Youth • My Morning Jacket

Comment of the Week: Metallica Channel An Unlikely AssociationAny time Metallica gets mentioned on Rock Daily, it’s always a catalyst for commenters, and this week’s premiere of new single “The Day That Never Comes” was no exception. Opinions varied, from people who believe it’s a phenomenal return to form to those who think the band should hang it up. Commenter Olgasm even compared Metallica to a band that no other reader brought up. “This is about 3 minutes too long and sounds like a medley of riffs from their mid-career. They’ve gone all “Collective Soul” and sprinkled good riffs among a field of cow pies.” Perhaps there’s a future in James Hetfield and Co. covering “Shine” at their upcoming shows in Europe.

Exclusive: Lenny Kravitz Tells RS “No Truth to the Story” About Joining Velvet RevolverContrary to internet reports today, Lenny Kravitz is not set to become the new singer of Velvet Revolver. The singer told RollingStone.com, “I know and love the Velvet Revolver guys but there is no truth to the story about me joining their band.” Rumors out of the U.K. claimed that Kravitz was “spotted” in the studio with the now-singer-less Velvet Revolver and suggested that Kravitz has just enough star power to fill the role vacated by Scott Weiland (who pretty much filled the role vacated by Axl Rose). However, Kravitz has been busy touring Europe and hasn’t had any contact with the VR camp. Kravitz is just the latest vocalist to be essentially handed VR’s microphone by the rumor mill, following artists like Sebastian Bach, Spacehog’s Royston Langdon and that guy who won Rock Star: Supernova.
