Annie Lennox covers Ash!As part of '80s duo Eurythmics, British singer Annie Lennox is used to having her songs covered by members of the rock world (Marilyn Manson released an industrial version of her '83 hit, Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This), in 1996), however, for her latest Greatest Hits package, Lennox has actually covered a track by Northern irish rock trio Ash. The singer's version of Ash's 2001 hit, Shining Light, can be found on the album, The Annie Lennox Collection, which is out today. Check out the accompany video here.

In the Studio: Ciara Evolves Again on Triple-Disc “Fantasy Ride” For her third album (due this fall), Ciara wanted to “take fans on a musical journey,” so she split her tunes into three discs that’ll be packaged together but focus on different genres: “Crunk Town,” “Groove City” and “Kingdom of Dance.” The concept sounds Disneyland-ish, but with Fantasy Ride’s versatile tracks — from the hyperspeed, Eurythmics-inspired club banger “Work” to the sweet, dreamy “When I” (on which Ciara imagines kissing her man near the Eiffel Tower) to the dark, synthy “High Price,” an ode to Porsches, diamonds and sake that features a Ludacris cameo — it’s far from cheesy. “I want to challenge myself and do things that are a bit edgier,” says the singer, who cut the record in Las Vegas and her native Atlanta (and is now about one week away from finishing up studio work). “I’m reaching further and digging inside, and I’m not afraid of what comes out.” “The different stops embrace different types of music and different vibes and different grooves,” she explains. “I’m not the queen of Crunk&B, never been that, never wanna be that, but I think it’s important to give my fans that sound that they loved about me from the beginning. I just give you some cool elements of what makes Ci Ci,” she says of “Crunk Town.” “It isn’t just crunk music, it’s just energy music that keeps you goin’ and that’s what crunk music is, period.” As for “Groove City,” “It’s just about groovin’ out, relaxing. It’s just the essential colors. You get a lot of sensuality on this record.” And “Kingdom of Dance”? “I just wanna make sure I keep the clubs rockin’.” Ciara promises a handful of major cameos, but is tight-lipped when it comes to naming names. Rob Thomas on Annie Lennox: “She’s Down and Dirty”Photo: Getty “Anybody my age turning on MTV and seeing Annie Lennox sing ‘Sweet Dreams,’ that was enough right there,” says Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas of the former singer of the Eurythmics. Thomas cites her vocal variety as the key to her greatness. “When she does stuff like ‘No More I Love Yous,’ she gets this ethereal Sarah McLachlan-esque kind of thing that just sounds like a beautiful angel. And then she can switch over the sound of her voice and make it sound like she’s gargling glass. And so many people can’t do that,” he says. Annie Lennox by Rob ThomasAnybody my age turning on MTV and seeing Annie Lennox sing
"Sweet Dreams," that was enough right there. And then when she
started doing songs like "Walking on Broken Glass" or "Missionary
Man," there's just something that's so soulful in those — and
it's not like a put-on, blue-eyed soul kind of thing: It's just
pure power, this gigantic voice. The Eurythmics was her fantastic
voice mixed in with Dave Stewart and his otherworldly, ahead of its
time production. There was so much theatrics involved in that band.
But when she started her solo thing, she sounded much more
vulnerable, much more like her. It sounded like a woman of a
certain age, you know what I mean, with a lot of talent and a lot
of years behind her, a lot of wisdom.

Iggy Pop, Beastie Boys, Led Zeppelin: Classic Shots From Rock Photographer Lynn Goldsmith Legendary rock photographer Lynn Goldmith’s current exhibition Rock and Roll: Lynn Goldsmith is up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland through January 6th, 2008, but you don’t have to hop a flight to check out some of the show’s highlights: Click here to browse our gallery of shots from the exhibit, which includes bonus Goldsmith stories about Debbie Harry, the Eurythmics and more artists she has photographed across the globe. “If Debbie had not been successful as a recording artist, she would have been a star in being a makeup artist or fashion stylist,” Goldsmith says, in reference to a photo of the punk icon from 1977. “Back in those days, artists did it themselves and she was the best one at it. She created looks that rock had never experienced before.” Related Stories: Sneak Peek: Mick Rock’s Syd Barrett Photo Book “Psychedelic Renegades” The Doors’ Lasting Legacy: A Photo Gallery Guns N’ Roses’ Early Days: Exclusive Photos From ‘Reckless Road’ Author Marc Canter
