Reclusive Rapper Doom Talks New LP “Born Like This.” and Responds to Fan RagePhoto: Kramer/Getty American underground rap iconoclast Doom (formerly MF Doom) releases his new album Born Like This. on Lex Records tomorrow, March 24th. The U.K.-born, New York-raised rapper’s LP features contributions from Ghostface Killah, Raekwon and the beats of late production genius J Dilla, and represents seven years of work recorded on and off at home in Atlanta. Thom Yorke recently remixed sexy single “Gazillion Ear” and funky, Jake One-produced “Ballskin” is bouncing across the major music blogs. The centerpiece of the record is “Cellz”, which explodes with apocalyptic fury. On it, the late, great American poet Charles Bukowski reads of one of his best poems, “Dinosauria, We,” for almost two minutes while missiles fire and the Earth is laid to waste. “Don’t freak with old Buke. Buke is nice. He’s as good as the rest of the rappers on there,” Doom says. “He kind of sets the tone for the record, being that we’re living in what he was kind of describing. He might’ve been reaching for the worst description based on what he saw us heading to, but it happened and that made me go, ‘Wow, that’s ill. Kinda prophetic words.’ ” With a career modeled on the Marvel comics arch-villain Doctor Doom, the metal mask-wearing fortysomething remains characteristically cryptic about future live dates. “I tell you one thing: when you come to a Doom show, come expecting to hear music, don’t come expecting to see. You never know who you might see. It has nothing to do with a visual thing. Use your mind and think. I might be there. Next time I do a show, I might tell everybody to close they eyes. Use your own mind’s eye. That’s better than a camera phone, know what I’m sayin’?’ ” He says Michael Jackson — who just sold out 50 shows in the U.K. — might be doing the same thing. “Word. That nigga was crazy as hell. How do you even know he’s still him? He might’ve been doing the technique.” The Doom live experience caused controversy in 2007, when the highly acclaimed lyricist behi

Smoking Section: AC/DC, Bob Dylan, The StillsSweet vindication! Last year in this column, AC/DC singer Brian Johnson promised that they’d tour in 2008. Well, he wasn’t kidding. Soon they’ll begin rehearsals in a secret location, before hitting U.S. arenas in late fall. We heard this news at the Sony HQ on New York’s Madison Avenue, before hearing all 15 tracks of the band’s earthshaking new Black Ice, recorded in Vancouver in just eight weeks with Brendan O’Brien. On it, Brian wails about skies on fire, blood in his eyes, storms raging, lightning flashes, hard rain and pretty women. Angus Young shreds throughout (we dig his slide work on “Decibel”), and the rhythm cats — Malcom Young, Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd — are solid as a rock. The first single is “Rock ‘N Roll Train”; “She Likes Rock ‘N Roll” will be a stripper anthem; and “War Machine” (our favorite) will tear you to pieces. ***** In Chronicles Vol. 1, Bob Dylan tells about a trip to Princeton, New Jersey, where, accompanied by his “obstreperous” buddy David Crosby, he received an honorary degree. The ceremony was a bummer — the speaker pissed off Bob by introducing him as “the authentic expression of the disturbed and concerned conscience of young America.” Dylan ended up writing “Day of the Locusts” about the trip. The S.S. recently had the pleasure of meeting Crosby and asked him for his side of the story. “I did something that I do to people: I got him really high,” said Crosby. “When we got there, there was an altercation between Bob and the Princeton people, who insisted that he wear a robe. I had to convince Bob to stay and do it.” In return, Crosby made it into “Day of the Locusts.” “There’s a line that goes, ‘The man standing next to me, his head was exploding,’ ” said Crosby proudly. “That’s me!” Crosby also told us that CSN are working on a new album with Rick Rubin, featuring covers of their favorite songs. “James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, people that we love,” says Crosby. “And Dylan, of course.” ***** We loved the Stills

Miley Cyrus accused of racism after new photo scandalIt’s been a while since Miley Cyrus has found herself in hot water (not literally, you understand – we’re sure she’s taken a bath quite recently), but the 16 year old is in big trouble after a photo emerged of her apparently mocking Asians. In the shot, Miley and a group of friends are pulling their eyes while sitting with an Asian friend, in what has been viewed as a racist gesture, and she’s now come under fire from racial equality groups. “Not only has Miley Cyrus and the other individuals in the photograph encouraged and legitimised the taunting and mocking of people of Asian descent, she has also insulted her many Asian Pacific American fans,” says the Chief Executive of The OCA. “We hope that Miley Cyrus will apologise to her fans and the APA community for this lapse in judgment and takes the opportunity to better understand why the gesture is offensive.” Miley has so far neglected to the comment on this latest hoo-ha, but we’re really not sure how she’s going to get out of this one…

EXCLUSIVE! Fightstar album playback reportLast night (Thursday, February 19) Fightstar hosted a special playback of some of the tracks which will be included on their upcoming third studio album, Be Human, in a central London bar. Kerrang!'s Katie P reports: The Brit four-piece treated invited guests to a playback of seven of the tracks that will be included on Be Human. First up was upcoming new single Mercury Summer - with the accompanying video. The footage showed the band playing in grey suits interspersed with images of a blond woman. The track itself showcased a new direction for the band; epic and heavy with huge pop hooks. The video was followed by new tunes Calling All Stations, Never Change, the grandiose War Machine, Whisperer, Tonight We Burn and electronic ballad Follow Me Into The Darkness. The tracks were accompanied by a slide-show of photos from the group documenting the creation of the album, which was recorded at Tree House Studios, and co-produced by the band along with Carl Brown. "I just shut my eyes and turned it up," bassist Dan Haigh told me. "I was trying not to look at people's reactions!" "We had the photos for people to look at while they listened," explains guitarist Alex Wetaway, "but we snuck in a photo of a dishwasher full of dildos halfway through to see if people would notice," he laughs. "That kept us entertained." "People gave us a standing ovation to War Machine, which made it all worthwhile," says Dan. "The final album will have 12 tracks on it. We are so proud of what we have done." "I'm more proud of this than anything we have ever done," added vocalist Charlie Simpson. "I'm so glad that people enjoyed it, I can't wait for everyone to hear the full album!" The band will be performing at the Royal Albert Hall with Bullet For My Valentine and The Blackout as part of a concert for The Teenage Cancer Trust on March 28. The group will then begin a headline tour on April 22, with support from In Case Of Fire and Laruso. For tickets/dates, click HERE. Be Human will be relea

How it happened: minute by minuteWe’re still reeling from the news that Britney’s been rushed to hospital, but now we’ve pieced together the events of her dramatic evening:
7pm (Los Angeles time – 3am here): K-Fed’s minders arrive to collect the kids from her house at a pre-scheduled time. She refuses to hand them over, and his lawyers are notified.
8pm: Los Angeles police receive a call from the lawyers, and five squad cars make their way to Britney’s gated residence. While Sean Preston is taken away by Kevin’s lawyers, Jayden James remains inside with Britney.
9pm: An LAPD officer tells reporters that they are “concerned about her mental state and believe she may be under the influence.”
11pm: There are now 13 police cars, an ambulance and, bizarrely, a fire engine at the house.
11.45pm: Britney leaves her home in an ambulance and behaves very oddly – grinning at some onlookers and giving the finger to others. The 13 police cars, with full lights and sirens on, escort the ambulance to the Cedars Sinai Medical Center. Jayden James is also taken to hospital in a separate ambulance, but it’s not currently known why.
12.30am: Britney arrives at the hospital. “Her eyes were like pinholes,” reveals one witness. Meanwhile, Kevin Federline has arrived separately, with Sean Preston. Britney’s pal Sam Lufti has also tried to enter, but was barred.
12.45am: Even K-Fed’s lawyer Mark Kaplan says, “I actually don’t know what is going on.”
1.15am (9.15am here): Britney’s dad Jamie – who has not been seen with Britney since spring 2007 – arrives at the hospital.
