SXSW Day Four Wrap-Up: Jim James, The Breeders, She & Him, Robyn Follow all of Rolling Stone’s ongoing SXSW coverage — photos, video, interviews and live reports — here. You could see the crowds of 6th Street in the distance from the window of Jim James‘ solo gig, but that was as close as the Mardi Gras atmosphere of SXSW encroached to this special show on the festival’s final night. Inside the music hall of St. David’s Episcopal Church, it was calm as a chamber music recital as the My Morning Jacket frontman performed gorgeous acoustic versions of his band’s most spiritual songs. He put aside his guitar and placed a small keyboard on his lap for the gentle “What a Wonderful Man” from Z, hitting high soulful notes that matched the God-like surroundings. Later he was joined by MMJ guitarist Carl Broemel for a stunning version of “Gideon.” The audience, which had been sitting quietly as church mice for the entire show, exploded into a standing ovation when it was over. Over at Waterloo Park, the Breeders kicked off their set with the droney, pounding “Overglazed” and “Bang On” from their forthcoming album Mountain Battles. The crowd stayed quietly reverent as the Deal sisters debuted some of the more low-key tracks from their first album in seven years (and its most upbeat track, “Walk It Off”), but perked up for their cover of the Beatles’ “Happiness Is a Warm Gun” (off their debut Pod) and Amps tunes like surfy “Tip City” and “Pacer” and went nuts when Kim Deal — who never stopped grinning — strummed her guitar with her thumb for Last Splash’s “No Aloha” and grabbed an acoustic guitar with an electric pick-up for “Cannonball,” bending over to squall into a microphone equipped with a fuzzy filter. Earlier in the afternoon, Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward’s She & Him played their fourth-ever show in the garden of the French Legation Museum.

Slash Says Stone Temple Pilots to Reunite Stone Temple Pilots will reunite this summer, according to Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash. The top-hatted axeman told Billboard that VR lead singer Scott Weiland will rejoin with his former bandmates, two-thirds of whom have most recently been teaming up with Filter’s Richard Patrick in the band Army of Anyone, for a handful of concerts to take place this summer. Slash’s comments echoed the quotes Weiland gave to the Miami Herald earlier this week, alerting fans they should be “on the lookout for an STP reunion in the coming months.” Velvet Revolver is currently touring in support of their second album Libertad, with songs by Stone Temple Pilots and Guns n’ Roses also featured in the set list. STP broke up in 2002 following the release of their fifth album Shangri-La Dee Da. Exclusive: “Guitar Hero World Tour” Adds Songs by Steve Miller, Wings, Rise AgainstPhoto: Getty Guitar Hero World Tour has already revealed an intimidating track list, and today Rock Daily can unveil another nine songs that will be included in the franchise’s latest offering. With a mix of the hyper-technical (Dream Theater), late-night stoner jams (Steve Miller), and full-on screamers (Filter), the new batch of tunes showcases a number of classics, as well as one currently climbing the rock charts: “Re-Education (Through Labor)” by Chicago punk band Rise Against. “I’ll meet one of the kids who live in my neighborhood, and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, I heard you’re in a band,’ ” Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath says. “I say, ‘Well, we’ve sold this many records and we’ve played giant shows and I’ve toured the world seven times,’ and they’re like, ‘No, I’ve never heard of your band.’ Then I say, ‘Well, I have a song in Guitar Hero,’ and they say, ‘You have a song in Guitar Hero? Are you serious?’ “ McIlrath isn’t a heavy gamer, but while some musicians give rhythm-based games grief for being just a facsimile of the real thing, he understands the appeal and even has a strategy for when he dabbles. “It’s like an interactive jukebox,” he says. “Who doesn’t want to listen to AC/DC and Heart all day? I can usually play it on ‘hard.’ I play with an actual guitar pick, and it really helps me. There’s something about the action of a pick going up and down — that’s my secret weapon.” As for the song itself, the average listener might not catch the serious lyrics from underneath the riffing and melodies, but as with most Rise Against songs, the subject matter stands in strong juxtaposition to the borderline bouncy tune (”We don’t live, we just survive on the scraps that you throw away”). “That’s always been the ace up our sleeve as a band,” McIlrath said. “We have songs that can sound good on the radio and can sound good in a video game, but we have lyrics that are still very much derivative from the hardcore and punk world that we came from. They can be very blu

IRAQ WAR OFF-KILTER FOR FILTERALMOST 40 years ago, Edwin Starr asked, "War - what is it good for?" Judging from a survey of albums and songs that've been released this year, one thing's for sure: It's good for songwriting. In the last few months, we've seen albums presenting the war from the point of view of soldiers (Black 47's "Iraq" album), anti-war tracks (Sheryl Crow's "God Bless This Mess") and tributes to dead soldiers (Tim McGraw's "If You're Reading This") and the National Guard (3 Doors Down's "Citizen Soldier"). There's also the soundtrack to "Body of War," a documentary about an Iraq war vet, with "No More," a new Eddie Vedder song. The latest musician taking a look at the realities of war is Richard Patrick, the mastermind behind the industrial/alt-rock band Filter."Anthems for the Damned" - Filter's first new disc in five years, post-Patrick's taking time off to deal with his alcohol addiction - is laced with irritation over the seemingly never-ending war in Iraq and general uncertainty about the times we're living in. But it's the first single off the album, "Soldiers of Misfortune" (download it at nypost.com), that really sheds light on Patrick's mind-set during his writing process.Inspired by a longtime Filter fan, the song is about a kid who "wanted to get a college education so he joined the Reserves, thinking, 'It's 1998, nothing will happen,'" Patrick says."In his senior year of college, they yank him out, tell him to put everything in storage, put him in training and send him to Baghdad. Ten days later, he ends up dead."A play on the "soldier of fortune" mercenary image, Patrick says "this kid is a soldier of misfortune - he's not Blackwater. He wasn't out there for any other reason than to do the country's bidding and there better be a very good reason for him to be out there and there wasn't . . . it's a stupid war and now he's dead."Having just turned 40, Patrick says, "I've grown up enough to know that I have to say something - I want to say something, popular or not."Whi

"Hey Venus!" by Super Furry AnimalsWell before Animal Collective captivated the blogosphere with their pop subversion, another group of costume-wearing animals won over critics by running their pop hooks through a filter of artful wackiness. Super Furry Animals never pushed the mainstream away, though; after all, they even (mostly) stopped singing songs in Welsh after their early years. Their eighth album amplifies their accessibility further, focusing largely on good-natured pop with bubbly hooks and psychedelic embellishments in all the right places. After kicking off with the nutty "Gateway Song," frontman Gruff Rhys bites into "Run-Away," nailing the soaring chorus while the band raises a Spector-like ruckus. Nods to The Beach Boys continue in the effervescent harmonies on "Show Your Hand" and "The Gift That Keeps Giving." While these pretty, perfectly executed pop songs don't push the band's boundaries, it's hard to imagine a better opening sequence. Throughout, Rhys sounds like a songwriter

"The Shepherd's Dog" by Iron & WineAfter his first two full-lengths, 2002's The Creek Drank the Cradle and 2004's Our Endless Numbered Days, Iron & Wine's Sam Beam faced a choice between shaking up his formula or continuing to write more achingly intimate acoustic songs and securing a comfortable pigeonhole as one of indie music's most beloved troubadours. He chose the path of most resistance, shacking up with Calexico for In the Reins, a rambunctious album of barroom blues and dusty country & western ballads. Similarly, Iron & Wine's Woman King EP suggested a full-band future for Beam, which he continues exploring on The Shepherd's Dog, with mixed but encouraging results. Beam's familiarly breathy vocals remain a warm and welcome constant—at least when they're not transmitted through a watery psychedelic filter, like the "Planet Caravan"-channeling "Carousel." "Wolves (Song of the Shepherd's Dog)" takes a similar tack, emerging as a jammy, stoner-friendly
