George Clinton Celebrates 67 Funky Years With Chili Peppers, Sly StoneLast night George Clinton proved you don’t have to be young to have fun in Hollywood. The Parliament-Funkadelic legend celebrated 67 colorful years on Planet Funk at Zune in L.A. with a bevy of babes in the house and celebrity well-wishers, including Sly Stone, Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ John Frusciante, Lili Hayden and others. “This party right here is my best birthday present all day,” said Clinton of his birthday bash/early release party for his new album, George Clinton and Some Gansters of Love, out October 7th on Shanachie Records and featuring covers/classics with the help of Sly Stone, Carlos Santana, the RZA, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, El DeBarge, and, of course, the P-Funk All-Stars. Clinton and his usual cast of characters nibbled on mini burgers, cheese balls, and later white birthday cake, and ran through a set of classics such as “We got the Funk” and “One Nation Under a Groove.” Frusciante, who with his fellow Peppers and rapper RZA played on “Let the Good Times Roll” on Clinton’s new album, told Rolling Stone that he was honored to play with the legendary musician. “George is the real God of Rock,” he declares. George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic at 9:30 clubHomemade band T-shirts and posterboard signs? You'd expect to see such things at a concert performed by a 16-year-old, not a 68-year-old. But there's always a frenzied reaction when funk icons George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic are onstage -- as was the case when they touched down at the 9:30 club Monday night.

Music Review: Chris Richards on U2's Dazzler at FedEx FieldAfter months of anticipation, it finally descended upon FedEx Field: the stage prop to end all stage props. Looming 164 feet over the stage and christened "The Claw," with its menacing girth it made Funkadelic's mothership look like a Frisbee covered in Reynolds Wrap.

Erykah Badu's Tech-Fueled, Home-Studio, Three-Album Recording Spree Not long ago, Grammy winner Erykah Badu was so tech-phobic that she would record only on old-school tape reels. "I didn't use ProTools or any of that stuff," she says. "The most digital things I owned were CDs." For a while, she even made vocal demos on her home answering machine. Then, in 2004, after a long creative drought, Badu was given her first laptop, its hard drive loaded with instrumental tracks from hip hop producers like Q-Tip, Madlib, and J Dilla. When her preteen son recently clued her in to GarageBand, Badu's home became a mini recording studio. "I could stand in my kitchen and go back and forth between cooking and recording," the 37-year-old singer says. "I was able to do it quick, before the idea floated away." The new setup prompted an intensive four-month recording spree yielding more than 70 songs, grist for a trio of albums Badu aims to release this year. February's New Amerykah, Part One: 4th World War is a dense collection of autobiography and commentary recalling the op-ed R&B of early-'70s Funkadelic (check out "The Healer," a slow-burning, haunting ode to hip hop). Part Two is due out in July, and Badu plans to accessorize it with USB sticks available at her Web site and concerts. Like DVD extras, the portable drives will feature commentary on the creative process behind each track. Plus, fans will be able to update their sticks with monthly multimedia downloads — everything from live show excerpts to "me in a bathtub with Flavor Flav," she says. "I wanted to give away my materials. It's about sharing, and that's why I like this system." That said, the singer is slightly less forthcoming about the third album, a "period piece" called Lowdown Loretta Brown that's scheduled for fall release. "I don't want to introduce too much of that right now," Badu says. "I don't want Gwen Stefani stealing my shit."
