Green Day’s New Album “21st Century Breakdown” Due in May

Photo: Mazur/WireImage Last night, Green Day presented the Album of the Year award to Plant & Krauss at the 51st Annual Grammy ceremony. This time next year, the punk trio’s role might be reversed — today word arrived that the Cali band’s forthcoming album, called 21st Century Breakdown according to their official Website, would be released in May. The band made no mention of the new disc before presenting the award. Warner Music confirmed the title and is now accepting pre-orders for the album at the early-bird price of $11.99. According to AP magazine, the new LP will feature 16 songs spread across three Acts: Heroes and Cons, Charlatans and Saints and Horseshoes and Handgrenades. Among the reported song titles include the title track, “Viva La Gloria,” “Know Your Enemy” and “March of the Dogs.” Garbage’s Shirley Manson and then a series of YouTube videos revealed that Butch Vig (Nirvana’s Nevermind, Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream) would be producing. Rolling Stone will have a host of details on Billie Joe and Co.’s latest next week — we joined the band in their San Francisco studio for a sneak peak at 21st Century Breakdown, and the full report will run in the next issue. The May album is the band’s first since 2004’s acclaimed American Idiot. That LP went on to win Best Rock Album at the 2005 Grammys, while “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” won Record of the Year at the 2006 event.  In the time since American Idiot’s release, Green Day released the album Stop Drop and Roll!!! as their secret side project, the Foxboro Hot Tubs. Shirley Manson Says Butch Vig Producing Green Day Album

That’s what Vig’s Garbage bandmate Shirley Manson let slip when she visited Last Call with Carson Daly to promote her role on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. When asked whether Garbage would ever end their “indefinite hiatus” to record a new album, Manson responded “I don’t know, to be honest. We’re sort of doing our different things. I’m doing the TV show, Butch is producing Green Day, so he’s busy, so we’ll see.” That was news to everyone, as Green Day, their label and their management have been pretty hush-hush on any developments regarding the follow-up to the band’s acclaimed American Idiot. There were rumors of Vig’s involvement with Green Day dating back to August, but there was no concrete proof until Manson’s remark. Outside of his days as a Garbage man, Vig is well-known for producing masterpieces like Nirvana’s Nevermind, the Smashing Pumpkins‘ Siamese Dream and Sonic Youth’s Dirty. Rock School: Lessons From Fall Out Boy’s Today Show Performance

What began as a mediocre Fall Out Boy performance on this morning’s Today quickly turned into an unforgettable rock & roll lesson. Against Me! name new album

Florida political punks Against Me! have completed work on White Crosses, the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2007 album, New Wave. The band finished tracking the album this past Saturday (October 17) in LA with producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage, Green Day). White Crosses, which is the first Against Me! album to feature new drummer George Rebelo (formerly of Hot Water Music), will be released in the UK through Warner Bros in early 2010.

My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way Taps Another Nail Into “Emo” Coffin

Debate over the true meaning of the term “emo” has lead to ridiculous feuds, (literally) hysterical TV news reports and naturally, more than a few hurt feelings. My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way recently agreed to an interview with the University of Maine’s newspaper and fired off an angry screed about the term that is sure to yield the highest traffic The Maine Campus has ever seen. When asked about being labeled emo, Way responded: “Basically, it’s never been accurate to describe us. Emo bands were being booked while we were touring with Christian metal bands because no one would book us on tours. I think emo is fucking garbage, it’s bullshit. I think there’s bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo. All I can say is anyone actually listening to the records, put the records next to each other and listen to them and there’s actually no similarities.” But tell us how you really feel, Gerard? “I think emo’s a pile of shit.” Aha. As Rock Daily learned last week, Pete Wentz’s crew has a pretty good sense of humor about the word. But seriously, bands that may or may not be emo, let’s just bury this semantic debate and call it a day. Other noteable factoids from the Maine Campus Q&A (click here to read our own, 100 percent emo-free interview with the frontman): Way is a briefs man, he’s pumped to open up for Bon Jovi and his advice for new bands begins with “don’t be full of shit.” Oh, and Way thinks being a band destroys your life: “You get in a van and never go home. You sever all ties. You’re going to be homeless anyways so you sleep on people’s floors. Don’t worry about food; don’t worry about being comfortable because it’s not going to happen.”

Green Day to record power pop album

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has hinted that the follow-up to their multi-million selling 2004 release American Idiot could be a power-pop album. "I really like fucking with arrangements and I always try to look at the possibilities of how you write power-pop music," Armstrong told US magazine Alternative Press. "You know, it's like, how do you take something and try to expand on the idea of what is supposed to be three-chord mayhem? I'm pushing myself to be progressive in songwriting and being a songwriter." The band are currently holed up in a Los Angeles studio with producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage, Against Me!). Armstrong revealed that the songwriting is proving to be a "painstaking process". "I'm allowing time for the process to happen naturally without having to force it," Armstrong told AP. "That is a painstaking process, let me tell you! For a bunch of guys that are ADHD [Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder], it's hard to have patience!" The as-yet-untitled album will be released next summer.

"The Ascension" by Otep

By now we can all agree on this much: nu-metal was responsible for an unthinkable amount of garbage. But if there's one band extreme music fans should thank Fred Durst and his goateed cronies for, it's Los Angeles' OTEP. Counting metal's most imposing frontwoman (not in Arch Enemy) among its ranks, and pretty much ignoring drop-D sportsmetal conventions, the quartet crafted a pair of meaty releases (and one lean EP) that derived "grooves" from Cali stoner metal thickness, as opposed to the hip-hop its peers so clumsily approximated. On album three, as with past releases, what keeps OTEP in "nu-" territory are their guitars, which hang out somewhere between those of scene grampas Coal Chamber and Fear Factory and never miss a chance to make use of detuned flat-fingered riffs. Hardly groundbreaking. But what keeps the record fresh is frontwoman Otep Shamaya's dynamic vocals, thrashing from full-bore scream to whisper in less than seconds. To wit, The Ascension
