​​In a precursor to Basilica Soundscape on September 11 – 13, Godspeed You! Black Emperor will perform a special warm-up show on the heels of their new album Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress.

The legendary, operatic post-rock band from Montreal Canada last performed at Basilica in 2012. The GYBE show is ticketed separately at $20, but with a special $60 discount weekend pass available to all GYBE show attendees for those who want the full upstate soundscape experience.

Since 1995, Godspeed You! Black Emperor is known for mounting sense-rattling wall-of-sound performances, marked by orchestral dynamics, epic rock power, and clunky beautiful film loops. Recruiting numerous Montreal musicians, the band has featured as many as 14 performers and put forth 5 albums tow widespread critical acclaim. BBC music has hailed their work as “challenging, intense, evocative” and their 2012 album was rated 9.3/10 by Pitchfork and rated an Album of the Year.

Opening the GYBE show will be Xylouris White, a collaboration between legendary Cretan lute player George Xylouris and Jim White, icon of underground music.

The GYBE show is the warm-up to Basilica Soundscape, a carefully curated two-day event that’s been called “the anti-festival” by various publications for offering of a thoughtful mix of music, visual art, and literature. Basilica Soundscape takes place this year in Hudson, NY on September 11 – 13 and features Perfume Genius, Haxan Cloak, Wolf Eyes, HEALTH, ACTRESS, Jenny Hval, Viet Cong, Weyes Blood, Circuit des Yeux, and more.

Hopscotch Music Festival, called "America's (Secretly) Best Festival" and "the premiere experimental and underground festival in America", returns to downtown Raleigh for the sixth year this September, 10-12. Featuring more than 140 bands over 3 days, Hopscotch is known for adventurous lineups, memorable performances, and a fan-friendly atmosphere. From a large outdoor main stage in Raleigh City Plaza to intimate club shows, the festival offers music in almost every genre imaginable—rock, hip-hop, metal, folk, electronic, experimental, and more—and its schedule highlights this diversity each year.

From its inception in 2010, Hopscotch has been a signature event for the creative community of Raleigh, North Carolina. Approximately 40% of the festival’s performers hail from in-state—a figure few, if any, nationally recognized music festivals can claim. With official programming stretching across 13 walkable venues, the SiteWork art exhibition, an annual photography exhibit, more than 30 day parties, and the newly announced Hopscotch Design Festival, Hopscotch is a city-wide celebration for locals and fans visiting from faraway locales.

Om du hävdar att Godspeed You! Black Emperor är världens bästa band tänker vi inte protestera högljutt. Ljudarkitekterna från Kanada har sedan mitten av 90-talet sammanfattat livet i sina hypnotiska och manglande epos utan att säga ett ord. I november kommer de till Sverige för att påminna oss alla om facit.

Montrealgruppen Godspeed You! Black Emperor har sedan start plöjt fram som en pråm genom musiklandskapet utan att tagit hänsyn till vad som stått i vägen. Många är vi som genom åren har körts över och kastats ombord och sedan dess vägrat att kliva av. Deras massiva och instrumentala postrock bygger upp ljudbilder så fyllda av komplexitet att du inte kan göra annat än kapitulera.

Under 2000-talet tog bandet ett långt avbrott, men har sedan återkomsten dunkat ut albumet "'Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!” 2012 och tidigare i år släppte de "Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress” – båda till fans och kritikers stora glädje. Det kan vara som meditation att lyssna på Godspeed You! Black Emperors skivor, men att uppleva det hela live är som att bli pånyttfödd. Stora ord till stort band. Som sig bör.
