Recording information: Barefoot Studios, Hollywood, California (2004).

When it comes to a genre as stylistically specific as pop-punk, bands generally aren't expected to progress much beyond the standard mix of raging guitars, speedy drumming, and high-pitched melodic vocals singing paeans to teen rebellion. With 2004's THE CHRONICLES OF LIFE AND DEATH, however, Good Charlotte confounds expectations by delivering a sprawling concept album that borrows from a variety of distinctly non-punk music. Opening with a spooky, orchestral piece that sounds like a mix of John Williams and Arvo Part, the disc races from Cheap Trick-esque power pop (the title track) to shoegazer-y angst-rock ("In This World [Murder]") to Rufus Wainright-like sensitive piano ballads ("The Truth"). On "I Just Wanna Live," the group even tries its hand at rap, rhyming over a groove that's half Snoop Dogg/half Happy Mondays. For all its seeming incongruity, however, the record never sounds messy, but rather emerges as the work of a band eager to expand the boundaries of both its chosen style and its own musicality. (Note: There are two versions of the album, each containing a different bonus track.)

- They never cease to amaze
Good Charlotte is an amazing band, as is this cd, despite what many may think.as for thoes of you who think that Good Charlotte is a band of sell outs well here what i have to say to you... how can someone sell out if they neevr knew what they were in the first place. also, why does everyone call them "posers" or whatever, they NEVER claimed to be "punk". it's music, who cares what it is as long as you like it. and if you dont, then dont listen. it's as simple as that! if you a "rocker" or whatever, then listen to your music, us GC fans wont bother you. so leave us and them the hell alone!
This cd is absolutly amazing and i wouldnt change it. it is different then the old stuff, but i think i like it more. this stuff isnt just about high school and being piked last, it's deeper... it means more to more people. it really has hit a soft spot for me... i highly suggest this cd to anyone.

This one is a lot deeper then all their others and its really encouraged me to write songs and work with my band even harder! you should give it a try if you've never heard it before. and if you think they're a bunch of "Posers" well you dont HAVE to listen to it! plus they never CLAIMED to be punk or anything they are jst 5 guys doing what they love and doing it the best they can! so give 'em a break!

- Good Charlotte Is good
It's not the band that are posers the music is freakn awesome but some fans are posers and that gives the band a bad name, but hey posers have the right to like good music too but y'know posers are annoying.

- Terrible
What a worthless pile. I sometimes wonder if Good Charlotte just tries to outdo themselves and put an even worse cd out every time. These idiots can't figure out who or what they want to be other than terrible artists. I can't believe people buy their records. Hearing it on tv is bad enough. Thank you MTV for making this terrible band famous.
