Grateful Dead to Play Another Show for Barack ObamaIt’s official. Sources tell Rock Daily that the Grateful Dead will play a fundraiser for Barack Obama on October 13 at Penn State. The band, including Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh and Mickey Hart, are planning to rehearse next week to prep for the show in one of the more hotly contested presidential swing states with Warren Haynes on lead guitar. Phil Lesh’s son, an Obama volunteer, lined up the gig. “They are all totally committed to the show,” said a friend of Jerry Garcia.

Readers’ Rock List: Bird SongsPhoto: Michael Ochs Archive/Getty In memory of Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboardist Billy Powell, the musician responsible for the famous introduction to the band’s “Free Bird” (and to honor last night’s great effort by the Arizona Cardinals in the Super Bowl), this weekend’s Rock List was dedicated to Bird Songs. It was a heated battle between two former Super Bowl Halftime Show performers, but in the end Paul McCartney and the Beatles’ White Album classic “Blackbird” edged out Prince and his Purple Rain gem “When Doves Cry” for the prize. To see where Alice in Chains, the Misfits and Wilco all nested, check out our Readers’ Rock List: Bird Songs below: 1. The Beatles – “Blackbird” 2. Prince – “When Doves Cry” 3. Alice In Chains – “Rooster” 4. The Beatles – “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” 5. Bob Marley – “Three Little Bird” 6. The Trashmen – “Surfin’ Bird” 7. The Beatles – “And Your Bird Can Sing” 8. The Grateful Dead – “Bird Song” 9. Steve Miller Band – “Fly Like An Eagle” 10. Phish – “Birds of a Feather” 11. The Misfits – “Where Eagles Dare” 12. Nelly Furtado – “Like A Bird” 13. Weekend Rock List: Jam BandsPhoto: Slevert/Michael Ochs Archive/ Getty For jam band fans, the past seven days were probably the best week since Phish played that Lemonwheel festival back in 1998: Trey Anastasio and gang, the Dead and the Allman Brothers all announced plans to tour in ‘09. To honor all of the proprietors of 30-minute songs, this week’s rock list is dedicated Jam Bands, those wonderful artists that give us a reason to quit our jobs, stop showering and caravan around in worship. If they jam, they count (thus, Sonic Youth qualifies — we’ll expect to see plenty of Disco Biscuits and moe. in the votes, too) So tell us your picks, and on Monday we’ll bust out Europe ‘72 while we count the votes. Until then, good luck in the Phish ticket lottery and check out our picks: • The Grateful Dead • The Allman Brothers • Phish • Sonic Youth • My Morning Jacket
