SXSW 2010 Day Four Twitter Marathon: 23 Reports, From Scissor Sisters to Free EnergyOn the last major day of SXSW, the biggest story was the weather — a cold front moved in and badgeholders moved out. With only a few big shows to hold people’s attention (a Big Star tribute, Scissor Sisters, unofficial appearances by Andrew WK and Gwar), the streets that once held an impenetrable mass of people were now light trickles, with everyone moving to warmer places or heading home early. Still, there were no shortage of amazing young and emerging bands to check out, and we clearly caught

Of Montreal Attracts Football Players, Glam Fans in D.C.Photo courtesy of Nestor Diaz/DCist.com Live shows are a much better fit for Of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes’ ambitions. On record, it can seem like he’s determined to re-create the high points of glam rock using just a drum machine, some zithers, and a selection of powered yard-care tools. And while Of Montreal’s stage set is unmistakably homemade, it’s a platform for Pink Floyd-sized (or at least GWAR-sized) aspirations. At the 9:30 Club, Barnes, dressed like a cross-dressing mariachi, emerged on a sedan chair, carried by four dancers dressed in gold lame Buddha outfits. It was one of the easier-to-explain spectacles in a night that saw him hanged from a gallows, painted red, and emerging from a flower-encrusted coffin covered in shaving cream. Also, there was music, but Of Montreal’s ironic disco couldn’t carry a show on its own. The six-piece band is charged not with hammering out musical epiphanies but with keeping the sexed-up dance party going. Barnes, incongrously for a fellow who looked as if he might kill himself at any moment, provided the sex, belting out falsetto tributes to Antarctica and blowjobs and lolling in a cardinal’s outfit during “Women’s Studies Victims” while a dancer in a naughty nun outfit tended to his tootsies, fitting him with some strappy ladies’ sandals. He wore those (and little else save for a gold high-waisted, Capt. Kirk-style bikini bottom) for the rest of the show, leading a crowd that included Redskins tight end Chris Cooley in “Plastis Wafers”‘ chorus of “You are such a fucking star/You know you are.” He was, for good reason, talking about himself. Set List: “Id Engager” “So Begins Our Alabee” “Triphallus, To Punctuate!” “She’s a Rejecter” “For Our Elegant Caste” “Touched Something’s Hollow” “An Eluardian Instance” “Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse” “Gallery Piece” “Wraith Pinned to the Mist (And Other Games)” “Women’s Studies Victims” “St. Exquisite’s Confessions” “Eros’ Entropic Tundra” “Nonpareil of Favor” “October is

Five Bands to Watch From SXSW 2008 You’ve seen the awesome photos, checked out our live footage and interviews with folks including My Morning Jacket, N.E.R.D. and Sara Bareilles, and read our daily reports on acts like R.E.M. and Thurston Moore — now get a look at the five up-and-coming artists Rolling Stone spotted down in Austin at this year’s SXSW fest: • Equal parts “dance” and “punks,” Does It Offend You, Yeah? obliterated the crowd with hard beats, glitchy synths, vocoder-enhanced vocals and a few wailing guitar riffs. • Cleveland MC Kid Cudi showed up during rapper Wale’s gig at Stubb’s on Saturday and just about stole the show with a killer Southern-flavored freestyle and a lot of stage presence; more proof that the Midwest is hip-hop’s most happening spot right now. • Los Campesinos!, seven kids from Wales, U.K., combine the insta-party vibe of the Go! Team with Broken Social Scene’s triumphant, ecstatic choruses. • We stumbled on Southend, U.K. outfit These New Puritans playing outdoors on a broiling hot Friday afternoon, and were stopped cold by their funky New Wave freakout — not to mention lead singer Jack Barnett’s steel shirt. Why should Gwar get all the armor? • Manchester, U.K. foursome The Whip are ready-made for dance parties, evoking Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem and — on their best number, “Trash” — a bit of Stone Roses. Carcass and Arch Enemy for Bloodstock!Carcass and Arch Enemy have been announced as joint headliners for one day of this year’s Bloodstock festival. They will join the likes of Amon Amarth, Satyricon, Candlemass, Saxon, Municipal Waste, The Haunted, Turisas, Gwar and more for the three day metal bonanza at Catton Hall, Derbyshire on August 14, 15 and 16. Carcass’ Bloodstock appearance is part of the Brit death metal legends’ long awaited reunion which has seen them tearing it up across the European festival circuit last summer. It’s also a test of physical endurance for guitarist Mike Amott who will be pulling a double shift, shredding for both Carcass and Arch Enemy. For tickets, line-up and travel info, visit the festival's official site.

Worlds We Didn’t Know Existed: Japanese Renaissance Cross-Dressing Goth MetalMy pal Zhanyi here at the office attended a concert last night at The Knitting Factory. The band playing was called Versailles -Philharmonic Quintet-, and they are a Japanese Goth Metal Visual Kei band. Zhanyi tells me: "Visual Kei is a Japanese term given to bands who wear visually stunning costumes. For the most part the bands' costume and make-up are on the feminine side." Feminine side? When he showed me this video, I thought everyone in the band except the lead singer was a girl. I had NO IDEA this world existed, and it's pretty mesmerizing. These guys are a giant bag of contradictions. It's like GWAR meets Labyrinth meets The Tudors meets Anime. Here's a clip from the show. Warning: lots of coy finger pointing alternating with head-banging ahead. According to Zhanyi, visual kei bands have a common answer to the question "Why do you dress like a girl?" Simple: The chicks dig it.

Your 'Idol' Minute: Seacrest, All Alone On The Pavement [Now And Hopefully Not Forever]newVideoPlayer("idol60_defamer.flv", 463, 387,"");The American Idol Karaokedome threatened to topple in on itself last night when the six remaining competitors tackled the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber—the musical equivalent of glucose-fortified pancake syrup, next to which the typical Idol pablum starts looking and sounding like a GWAR concert. Presuming you possess something approaching a life—a luxury we've relinquished a long time ago—and missed the telecast, master Defamer videologist Molly McAleer has compressed the proceedings into one easy-to-digest, mind-altering capsule of MDMA-like bliss. Join Ryan "Captain Trips" Seacrest, won't you, on this journey of Webberesque discovery, meeting the Phantom of the Archuleta and the Rum Tum Castro along the way. But never fail to heed Grizzled-Paula the Incomprensible Glamour Judge's warning to "never start and stop," lest you wind up like Brooke White, humiliated before an audience of millions as you fumble for that elusive word that rhymes with "Argentina."
