Happy Mondays concerts 2013

The original Happy Mondays are on course to headline a 5,000 capacity outdoor gig in the heart of Bristol next May as they take centre stage at VegfestUK Bristol’s tenth birthday party on Saturday May 25th 2013, along with support from 808 State and The Farm, plus a DJ slot from Peter Hook (New Order/Joy Division).

And with Caravan Palace headlining Friday, with support from Kitten and the Hip and The Boxettes, and The Abyssinians heading up the reggae sunsplash on Sunday with Macka B, Bristol is in for a musical as well as foodie treat as VegfestUK Bristol comes of age and goes into double figures as one of the longest established and most successful independent food and music events in Bristol.

Around 25,000 visitors are expected over the three day festival, many of them from out of town, and many of them experiencing the delights of 100% plant based food for the first time too – VegfestUK Bristol is the world’s biggest veggie event and there are no animal products permitted at the event.

During the daytime (11am – 6pm Saturday and Sunday) visitors can expect a feast of different cuisine from across the globe, along with 125 stalls crammed with goodies including food, bodycare, clothes, fashion and accessories, and campaigns merchandise as well as information in abundance about the benefits of the plant based lifestyle, along with recipes, nutritional information, cookery demos, talks, a cinema and a host of entertainment including comedy hours, live music and performance. Admission is only £2 adults and £1 kids/claimants/OAP’s during the daytime up to 6pm (pay on gate).

Then in the evenings the Main Stage takes over proceedings and some of the biggest headliners to ever grace an outdoor stage in Bristol take centre point and crank up the PA for some fantastic sessions on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening. Admission to the Friday and Saturday evening events is by advance ticket only – there are no tickets available on the gate. Tickets for Friday (Caravan Palace) are priced £15 + fees, and for Saturday (Happy Mondays, 808 State, The Farm, Peter Hook) its £25 + fees. And with an after-hours parties on Saturday too, it looks like Bristol and veggies in particular will be spending most of the weekend eating and dancing – a great way to celebrate 10 years as this event enters its second decade, having been established in 2003 as an annual event in the heart of Bristol.

After postponing their Brighton show in November, the Happy Mondays are back in full fighting force and ready to twist Brighton’s melon in 2013. On bank holiday Sunday 26th of May, the full original line-up of the Mondays will be bringing their iconic Madchester sound and rock ‘n’ roll swagger to the shores of Brighton, for a live show like no other. Support on this one off date, comes from acid house legends 808 State Soundsystem.
The Happy Mondays are as iconic to British music as the Hacienda in which they were discovered. Staggering their way through the early 90’s, with a series of massive singles and albums, they established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. Pioneering the cross over between dance music and indie, with British rock and roll excess, they rapidly entered into folk law as the stories of their exploits spread with their music.

Ahead of the May 2013 Australian tour by the original line up of Manchester's Happy Mondays, the band have announced that they will be joined by Joy Division and New Order founding member, and Manchester legend in his own right Peter Hook playing a special DJ set at each Australian show. Also, due to unprecedented demand for tickets in the West , the Capitol show in Perth has now moved to Metropolis, Fremantle on Wednesday the 8th of May. The new Fremantle show will also feature further special guest locals Death Disco DJs. All previously purchased tickets are valid for the new venue.

Peter Hook was a key figure in the Madchester scene, a movement which took seed in the infamous Hacienda club, the legendary venue partially funded by Hook's band New Order. The Hacienda was the cultural epicentre of a musical zeitgeist that unified a generation of music fans across the globe. Hook's involvement in the club and Manchester scene along with being a member of two of the most influential acts of all-time will bring even more of the original spirit of Madchester to what will surely be an amzing run of Australian shows.

Through six studio albums, a live compilation, a slew of seminal singles and EPs and several different guises Melbourne's Underground Lovers have been taking listeners on a musical journey since the early 1990's. Recently reforming after an almost decade long hiatus Underground Lovers are back and will bring an even bigger sense of celebration to those lucky to be attending the Monday's Melbourne show.

Fusing the euphoric elements of acid house and rave with joyous indie guitar pop, Manchester's Happy Mondays became one of the most influential UK bands of the later 20th century. Instigating a cosmic psychedelic shift that is still being felt in music today, the Mondays delivered a salvo of classic tracks and club anthems that were not only highly danceable, but contained enough visceral emotion and raw chemical energy to continually excite and engage a generation. Tracks like Step On, 24 Hour Party People, Wrote For Luck, Loose Fit and Kinky Afro showcased the band's unique ability to unify the divide between dance music and rock 'n' roll.

Following their incredible two night residency at The Roundhouse in December, the legendary ‘Madchester’ band the Happy Mondays return to London for a special performance at The Forum.

In 2012 The Happy Mondays announced a return to the live stage, reuniting the full original line up for the first time in over 19 years. Following two sold out nights at the Brixton Academy, they followed these shows up with a visit to the Roundhouse courtesy of CME welcoming the acid house pioneers 808 State along for the ride.

In 1985 the Happy Mondays fused a sound that owed as much to northern soul and funk as it did rock and psychedelia. It was however the influence of the house music records beaming in from Chicago that had the most profound effect on the band. In 1990 they released the ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills and Bellyaches’ album which collided with the acid house and rave movement that had swept the UK, firmly putting The Happy Mondays on the map as one of the most inspiring bands to come out of England in the early 1990s. The rest as they say, is history.

With the classic cuts ‘Step On’, ‘Kinky Afro’, ‘Hallelujah’ and of course the track mirrored by a film of the same name ‘24 Hour Party People’ cementing the bands reputation as one of the most advantageous and colorful of the last 20 years, June 29th will no doubt be one show not to be missed!
