Weekend Rock List: Next Velvet Revolver Singer With Scott Weiland officially out as singer of Velvet Revolver, this week’s Rock List will be an open casting call to vocalists you think are worthy of the job. Slash told us yesterday he had some people in mind, but he didn’t want to start “naming names.” So we’ll name ‘em for him. Tell us your picks for who should rock the mic with VR, and on Monday we’ll reveal the winner of the Rock List: Next Velvet Revolver Singer. In the meantime, here’s who we’re lobbying for: • Phil Anselmo: All the haters who thought VR didn’t rock hard enough with the glam-happy Weiland would roll out the red carpet for the former voice of Pantera. • Chris Cornell: Because not only does Audioslave not want him, but having Timbaland produce his solo album and cashing in off American Idol don’t seem like the best career options for the former Soundgarden frontman right now. • Mike Patton: The man is a vocal chameleon and can fill the role of Rose, Weiland or anybody else for that matter. Any contract with Velvet Revolver should include an opt-out clause that allows Patton to reunite Mr. Bungle. • Trent Reznor: He did just dismiss his touring band. • Axl Rose: For obvious reasons. If that were to happen, they should give Dizzy Reed a call too.

Postscript: Tony Wilson (1950-2007) Say what you like about Tony Wilson, he was no sentimentalist. “Do I have any problem with any of Happy Mondays dying on me?” he said to The Face in 1989, at the height of Madchester-mania. “I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with any of these guys dying on me! Listen, Ian Curtis dying on me was the greatest thing that’s happened to my life. Death sells!” The U.K.’s most outrageous music impresario died today of a heart attack, at the age of 57, after a battle with kidney cancer. He founded Factory Records, making legends out of Manchester bands like Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays and A Certain Ratio. His club, the Hacienda, was one of the crucibles of rave culture. His gloriously self-aggrandizing life story became 24 Hour Party People, one of the best rock movies ever made, with Steve Coogan playing Wilson; in the climactic scene, Wilson sees God, who says, “Tony, you did a good job. It’s a pity you didn’t sign the Smiths, but you were right about Mick Hucknall.” Just a few months ago, Wilson showed up onstage at the Coachella Festival, introducing the Mondays, and got bigger cheers than the band did. He’ll always be remembered as a wild character who also doubled as a musical visionary. Here’s a clip of his surprise Coachella appearance from April, with the expats in the crowd yelling “Foookin’ Tony Wilson!” in delight. This man did not walk away in silence. Photo: Davey/Photo

R.E.M., Van Halen Enter Rock HallR.E.M. had a shiny, happy reunion for this headlining gig. Van Halen, not so much. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame swung open its doors Monday night to the latest batch of acts ticketed for music immortality, with the Georgia alt-rock icons and the dysfunctional Pasadena party band leading the way. They were joined by '70s punk pioneer Patti Smith, '60s girl group the Ronettes and the first hip-hop act to crash the party, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five.

Shaun Ryder’s Happy Monday For Darling’s Black MondaySHAUN Ryder giving his Budget verdict. In “Alistair Darling what a tw*t”, Ryder, whose Happy Mondays band provided a 1980s antidote to Black Monday, tells fiscally minded Daily Sport readers: Darling is “one of those people who hasn’t just got a face you want to punch, he’s got a name you want to punch as well.” It’s a double whammy. “I hate Chancellors…Ok, Tony Blair might have invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, been embroiled in the alleged cash for honours affirm and changed politics for spin. But Gordon Brown was that c*** who out 9p on a packet of fags.” (more…)

shoegazing, british-style."I was looking for a job, and then I found a job. And heaven knows I'm miserable now." – The Smiths Some days -- especially the moody, drizzly days of late fall -- are made for the maudlin musings of Morrissey et al., or the Divine Comedy's cheeky disaffection, and there's all this and much more, from the Happy Mondays to Placebo, in the just-released Brit Box: U.K. Indie, Shoegaze, and Brit-Pop Gems of the Last Millennium. Rhino Records brought together 78 U.K. performers spanning the last 15 years of the 20th century. It's full of key recordings from bands who've exported nicely to this side of the pond and plenty of others (like the Shop Assistants or Spacemen 3) that are lesser-knowns in the U.S. but helped shape the sound of Brit-pop as we know it. And the whole thing -- four discs of music, tons of photos, an 80-page booklet of notes and ephemera -- comes packed into a box shaped like an English phone booth, complete with battery-powered flickering light bulb.

I’m Genuinely Happy That Dick Clark Will Be Back Hosting That Thing I Never WatchI haven't actually watched a "New Year's Rockin' Eve" special since I was about two years old and didn't possess the motor skills or thought comprehension necessary to change the TV channel, but regardless, the following piece of positive news caught my attention: DICK CLARK and RYAN SEACREST will be back as the hosts of the 36th "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve," kicking off the countdown to the New Year with a three-and-one-half hour special, starting at 10 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31 on ABC. This story makes me happy -- Dick Clark is a genuine American icon, and his impact on the entertainment industry over the last half-century is arguably unequalled. Who cares how inessential the broadcast usually is; doesn't just the fact that Dick Clark is actually doing something brighten your day a little? I don't care how patronizing that sounds, it's the damned truth. Am I actually going to be watching one second of this thing? Of course not. Why do I care what sh*tty bands decide to promote their songs via satellite by lip-synching in front of coordinated crowds in Malibu? If this year is anything like New Year's '06, I'll be pounding expensive champagne and alternating makeouts with three seperate formally dressed, attractive flappers, if my powerfully deluded memory serves me right. But anyway -- yay Dick Clark.
