NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEARTLETTING a band write, produce, engineer and mix its own album - without any input from outside sources - is often a recipe for disaster. The rock cliché is that the final product winds up being, bluntly, a convoluted mess. The Faint bassist and...

HIM - Venus Doom Artist: HIM Review: As doom merchants go, HIM are pretty easy to take. On their sixth album, the long-running Finnish quintet tops Black Sabbath riffs and grinding, tightly wound grooves with Ville Valo?s lovesick crooning, all of which adds up to a dark, sexy sound the band once dubbed ?love metal.?(Its logo is a pentagram mashed up with a heart.) Valo keeps his bleeding heart on his sleeve, yowling about dead lovers and dropping creepy poetry like the title track?s gothed-out lament: ?Watch me fall for you my Ven... Rating: 3 Stars

Tim Reynolds - Live At Radio City Artist: Tim Reynolds Review: Long before is band was treating stadium crowds to sax solos and jammy polyrhythms, Dave Matthews was a frat-house troubadour, playing freewheeling acoustic gigs with his buddy, guitar whiz Tim Reynolds. Matthews has kept doing the occasional unplugged show through the years, and on this two-disc live album, recorded in April, much of his material stands up just fine without full-band wizardry. Matthews highlights the warm, sensitive-dude beauty at the heart of cuts like the previously unrecorde... Rating: 3 Stars

Hype Monitor: Reykjavik!, Mazes, Ivan & AlyoshaEvery week, Hype Monitor wades through the most buzzed-about bands all across the Internet to find the ones you need to hear now. The Band: Reykjavik! The Buzz: Icelandic band decimates hardcore, turning out brutal, bratty songs that beg and kick. Listen If: You miss the days when …Trail of Dead was all sneer and volume Key Track: “The Blood,” all galloping drums and stomping feedback and gruesome Birthday Party riffs. The Band: Mazes The Buzz: Forget the new no-fi — Chicago band writes songs that are light and soothing as spring breezes. Listen If: You have an ear and a heart for melodies that lap like the ocean on the beach. Key Track: “I Have Laid in the Darkness,” a lonesome lullaby sure to soothe the heartbroken. The Band: Ivan & Alyosha The Buzz: Smooth, soaring guitar pop from Seattle duo that is plaintive and pristine. Listen If: You’d be curious to hear what happened if the Shins slowed it down a bit. Key Track: “Easy to Love,” the perfect late Valentine for the mutually smitten.

Single Minded: Death Cab Cover the Cure, Gaslight Anthem Rule “Letterman”Photo: Winter/WireImage Death Cab for Cutie, “Love Song” [Cure Cover] One sad face deserves another: Ben Gibbard provides further proof that everyone who grew up in the suburbs owned a copy of Disintegration. If only he and Death Cab could swoop in and save Robert Smith from himself. The Gaslight Anthem, “The ‘59 Sound” [Live on Letterman] We’ve had this longstanding rule that no live band sounds good on TV. And then we saw NJ’s Gaslight Anthem on Letterman and concluded that either a) our rule was wrong, b) they are, in fact, the band of our generation, or c) some combination thereof. Absolutely breathtaking. The Police, “Roxanne” [Discotech Remix] Heart-stopping and electrifying, Discotech paint the Police bright pink and take them for a night on the town. Charlie Ash, “I Wanna Sex You Up” [Color Me Badd Cover] The critical reappraisal of Color Me Badd begins right here, with this aggro cover of their most grammatically improbable hit. Various Artists, “The Covers Mixtape” [Covers] Fourteen artists tackling 14 songs that aren’t their own, all of them handling their source material with class and panache. Start with Steve Earle’s rollicking punk/country cover of “Breed” and work outwards from there.

Hype Monitor: Fever Ray, New Villager and Ghost HunterEvery week, Hype Monitor wades through the most buzzed-about bands all across the Internet to find the ones you need to hear now. The Band: Fever Ray The Buzz: Solo outing of Karin Andersson of Swedish electro-Gothers the Knife. Sounds kind of like the Knife. Listen If: Grey is your favorite color, or grim is your favorite mood. Key Track: “If I Had a Heart,” a bleak, pulsing funeral march where Andersson’s wisp-of-smoke voice curls around fat blue bands of synth. The Band: New Villager The Buzz: Bi-coastal duo bang out brawny indie pop. Listen If: You wish Animal Collective’s fangs were a bit sharper. Key Track: “Rich Doors,” a thumping combo of mantra-like vocals, tribal percussion and cascading keyboards — it’s “Life in a Northern Town” writ very, very small. The Band: Ghost Hunter The Buzz: It’s all eerie: weird wind chimes, whistling keyboards and thudding percussion combine to create the sound of the woods at night. Listen If: You’re looking for a good accompaniment for your next bout of hypnosis. Key Track: “Through the Haze of the Green Glasses,” which is nothing but weird soprano synthesizers and off-kilter percussion — like a Kate Bush song without Kate Bush.

Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Natkin/Wireimage Rock Daily remembered the Stooges legendary guitarist Ron Asheton, who passed away from a suspected heart attack at age 60. Iggy Pop paid tribute to his “best friend,” we looked back at Asheton’s legacy and his greatest riffs, revisited Asheton talking about his influences and Talk Show Flashbacked to the band’s good old days. Phish Phans and Dead Heads crowded the streets in celebration as both jam band greats announced tour dates for 2009. That’ll give Trey Anastasio ample time to play with that new compressor fans bought him. Not to be outdone, the Allman Brothers announced their annual Beacon run, and we asked readers to tell us their favorite jam bands. In what could be considered good news and bad news, Jimmy Page’s manager announced that plans for Led Zeppelin to tour with a replacement for Robert Plant have been called off. Unfortunately, Page’s manager doesn’t think the band will be touring with Robert Plant at any point either. 2009 is shaping up to be the Year of the Shady Aftermath as Eminem’s “Crack A Bottle” from Relapse and Dr. Dre’s “Could Have Been You,” maybe from Detox, leaked on the Web. Kelly Clarkson revealed her glossy new look and her re-embrace of pop with the covers of both her single “My Life Would Suck Without You” and upcoming album All I Ever Wanted.

Single Minded: Lil Wayne, Katy Perry and a Fake Bob Dylan Cover Lil Wayne, “A Milli” [Thunderous Olympian Juke Down Remix] The last thing the world needs are more versions of “A Milli,” but this remix justifies its existence by speeding things up and chopping things up, making the whole thing glow all LED-like. Magnetic Fields, “Heroes” [David Bowie Cover] Stephin Merritt brings out the dour devil buried deep in the center of Bowie’s most triumphant song. Katy Perry, “I Kissed a Girl” [The Knocks Remix] Still not a Jill Sobule mashup, unfortunately. Unknown Artist, “Dylan Hears a Who” [Imaginary Cover] Anonymous rock band startlingly replicates the sound of Dylan in the mid-60s, offering a strong argument that perhaps Bob and the good Doctor were both smoking the same thing. Lambchop, “Slipped, Dissolved & Loosed” [New Song] Slow & steady wins our heart: Nashville stalwarts uncork another aching, lovely ballad, sure to please anyone with the proverbial two ears and a heart.
